Wait, so which is it? He broke the rules or he didn't? If you're so adamant he followed the rules shouldn't you be OUTRAGED the NCAA is unfairly punishing your player? Or maybe you're content with the fact that he broke the rules, was given a "punishment" the equivalent of two bye weeks, and now gets to play in the only games OSU has had against real teams all year. In which case you're proud that your player cheated and admitted it during the most beneficial time for himself

The worst part is once again there is zero transparency. Which IMO is telling. If everything is on the up and up, wouldn’t the details come out?

  1. Who is the individual that loaned him the money?
  2. Did Chase have a relationship with this individual prior to the start of his recruitment by OSU in 2015?
  3. How much was loaned?
  4. How did OSU find out about the loan?
  5. Why did this individual give Chase the money, rather than book the flight for his girlfriend directly?

these are very simple questions and based on the suspension being only two games, there must be logical explanations for each question. If that is the case, why not let the details be known?

It's not just OSU, or even really OSU's problem. Their AD plays by the unwritten rules of modern college football under the NCAA.

It's totally rational for OSU to behave like they do. It's the NCAA's fault that this is the system that they've created.

If the "family friend" gave him the money for his GF to travel to the Rose Bowl, why didn't the friend just give her the money or just buy her ticket? Believe what you want, but while it can't be proven, leads one to think something more is/was at hand.

Bingo - this was my initial thought as well. Chase should have known that accepting that money could get him in trouble, so just have the "friend" buy the ticket for his girlfriend, or send her the money directly. The fact that it went to Chase first for him to then use as he saw fit is what makes this sound even worse.

That said I'm not the slightest bit surprised that his suspension is only 2 games.

Of course it was; this happened almost a year ago and they are just dealing with it now.  This was always the plan.

As always, pay players above the table and a lot of this goes away.  It also gives schools like Michigan, with massive pockets and successful alumni, a chance to flex their muscles.  Yes, OSU is a large state schools with resources, but they have an endowment of $5.2B; Michigan's is $12B.  Alabama and Clemson don't even crack $1B.  Obviously those are not athletic-specific amounts, but it still shows a school capable of tapping various monetary sources.  And I'm sure Michigan's "close family friends" are at least as rich and powerful as whatever OSU's are.

While I agree with the fact UM has more money floating around among alumni, it only takes one really rich alumni. Can't Dan Gilbert just give someone $10MM/25MM a year to manage to help pull athletes to MSU? Or more? It's not going to be an uncapped bidding war. It won't make sense to have endorsements that total hundreds of millions of dollars across any one school's athletic department. I imagine a lot of schools will have that one rich alumni who is willing to pay for above the board endorsements.

So they got to play an ineligible player for the first eight games of the season.  Shouldn't they have to vacate those wins?

Shouldn't the committee take into account the fact that since OSU played an ineligible player for 8 games they will have to vacate those wins?  So at this point OSU is really 1-0 since they shouldn't be able to claim victories in their games prior to Maryland.  Doesn't look like a playoff team to me.

Message is, there's no real penalty.  No accountability for breaking the rules.  It's mind boggling that these "rulings" can be handed down with a straight face.  Cheaters prosper.

Well I can’t say I blame the NCAA for trying to ensure it’s #1 ranked team gets into the playoffs...starting to think this playoff business wasn’t best for the sport.

Not sure why it matters. There is another 5-Star DE behind him waiting to wreak havoc. Honestly even if he was suspended i don't know that it would make much of a difference. We need to stop them from scoring.

Wouldn’t OSU reporting back in January be honest and forthcoming but waiting for someone to report it to the ncaa cause them to lose the benefit of the doubt? I don’t think it’s a big deal, but the reasoning is flawed.

It seems that all of PState and UM will go berserk with this decision, but honestly, based on the suspensions given other CFB players in recent years, I don't see why anyone is surprised. This appears to be consistent with those decisions.

I get the herbstreit hate but there have been several other national media people calling the suspension a joke and there shouldn't be one.

CFB players are about to be paid. I've followed this sport for 50+ years and never thought I would see the day. Its just a different CFB world now whether any of us like it or not. The CY (and others) decisions is just another part of the change.
