Charles Woodson Retiring at the End of the Season

Submitted by Braylon 5 Hour… on

Sorry if already posted, but Charles Woodson just announced his retirement, effective at the end of the season. Awesome that he retires a surefire Hall of Famer but will be sad to not have him playing anymore. Maybe he can come be a special recruiting consultant for the football team?

Can Woodson coach mortals?

"OK, so what you need to do here is read the tight end, running back and wideout all at the same time.  You start playing press man against the #1 receiver; that's the easy part.  But if the tight end blocks and the wide receiver runs an out while the running back leaks into the flat, yell 'CODE 4 SCUZZLEFUZZ' at the weakside linebacker and keep covering the receiver but sag back a bit inside in case the tight end's faking the block and goes into a route, but keep an eye out for a swing pass to the RB.  Oh, and if the QB throws the out you need to close and break that shit up.  Got that so far?  Here's where it gets tricky.  If the RB -- hey, stay sharp, we have 300 more play variants to go through on the tape."

I see a similar problem with Tom Brady.  Jim Harbaugh was the son of a coach and coaching while still playing, but Tom and Charles are lifelong students of the game.  I really don't know how well they'd do trying to develop 18-year-olds with heads on swivels.

lol why the hell would he coach football?

Could he be some kind of advisor to the program? Sure.

But let's let the guys who've done it for a living, who are willing to put in the loooong hours, who know how to do this job at a high level - let's let them do their thing. Sure Woodson is my all-time human being ever...but let's not discount who's on the staff.

Plus, why would he want to do this? He's got the money and he's still making plenty in endorsements and his own business.

Create some special position for him like ambassador of football operations or something.

Something that allows him to have contact with the student-athletes, raise money, provide self-scouting/coaching/film study, protect the M 'brand', connect us with Jordan Brand, and serve as an advisor for program decisions.

That sounds like an awesome role for someone who realistically isn't going to come back and be a position coach.

Outside of the birth of my children and marrying my wife that might have been the happiest 15 minutes of my life.  Absolute perma-grin after he took that punt back.

Wow. He's my favorite player to watch. I find myself always watching Raider games or Green Bay games before that. Great player and an all-time great. He will always be my favorite Michigan player.

Great that a player as legendary as Charles get to leave the game on his own accord. Here's to you Mr. Woodson. May your next phase of life be as great as the first was.

Side bar, as a guy who had to have surgically repaired club foot as a child I always found it inspirational that Charles did also. He didn't let it hold him back a bit obviously

I was thinking this would happen, especially after watching him play yesterday.   Charles had an active game, but hurt his shoulder badly and could barely tackle,  It was tough to watch, his body is pretty damned shot but he still is amazing to never take a play off.

It'd probably be worth everyone's while to watch each of the remaining Raiders games this season.

Sir Charles is arguably the best to have worn the winged helmet and a certain HoF selection. Don't want to miss out on the final moments of such a spectacular career.

Woodson is my favorite player of all time. Sad to see him go but he's going out on his terms and you can't ask for a better way to go. #2 was my first Jersey ever and I still cherish it. Thank you Charles for giving me the pleasure to watch you all these years. Already looking forward to his induction speech at the HOF.

I may not like the teams, but Charles Woodson is all class and has had an amazing career.  Will be doubly sad for Oakland if they have to say goodbye to Woodson and the whole team (again).

My first football memories are of watching him in maize and blue and I can't say I'm looking forward to football with out him.
Heisman, MVP, national championship, super bowl, soon to be HOF... One of the greatest to ever play the game.

I now feel old (34).

He is the first player I remember seeing go from freshmen all the way to a HOF player.

Woodson is my all time favorite player. Retire #2

Let's make a road trip to Canton in five years.

... against the Chiefs.  I had attended both his first college game in 1995 and the Heisman-clinching game against the Buckeyes in 1997, and wanted to see him in person one more time.  I also wanted my boys to see him live once.  This was their first NFL game.

It was a big day for the Raiders, who were at that point still very much in the playoff picture. He still moved the same fluid way.  Though a little slower, he rose to the occasion as always causing two fumbles, one of which he recovered himself and returned 30 or 40 yards.  Just as against the Buckeyes in 1997, he was essentially keeping his team in the game single-handedly.

But in the second half, the Raiders QB threw three picks to give away the game.  He gave it everything to keep the Chiefs out of the end zone without success.  After the Chiefs' clinching TD, which pretty much knocked the Raiders out of the playoffs, CW walked off the field slowly with his head down low, far away from his teammates, and didn't talk to anyone.  It was sad to see, but a fitting end to the competitive career of the GOAT.

I'm not saying he would but if you can get him to A2 under any official UM Football capacity you do it. Not every player can coach so I'm not saying that but literally anything we could do to have him in that building and possibly recruiting.

Sad to see him retire; for many of us he is a link to our youths. And he is still really, really good. It would be awesome if he came back to Michigan in some coaching capacity. But if he wants to do his own thing, that'd be great, too. He certainly deserves to ride off into any sunset he chooses. Go Blue!

so when Woodson won the Heisman it was especially satsisfying for me. To this day UT fans still whine and moan about Peyton not winning because of ESPN bias. Well what do they say about all of the SEC knob slobbering that goes on today? Congratulations to one of the best DB's to ever play the game and one of my all-time favorite Wolverines.
