CC: Who stays and who goes?
Okay, so I'm not plugged in, and was wondering if we could get a condensed rundown of who we expect to leave and who we expect to stay. Here's what I've heard so far, please correct me and update. I'm guessing it all depends on whether or not Sherrone is hired as HC, but as that seems the most likely move, let's just assume that and go from there. I'm guessing since the school year has started at most places, we won't see much Portal action at least until after spring practice.
Staying:
Donovan Edwards, most of the defense.
Sherrone Moore, Clinkscale, Mike Hart (does he get OC title?), Ron Bellamy,
Going:
JJ, Barner, a couple O-line that still had covid years.
Jaybaugh, Minter? (I think we need to at least test the theory of how much money could keep him here)
Other Minter (was just a temporary guy).
Not Sure:
Ben Herbert (Feldman says he's going, so that means he's staying, right?)
Pa-pa Harbaugh. Is he moving to So-cal, or is he keeping the AA houses? Will Jim come back home after he gets his Lombardi? (and Warde has moved on to a farm up north?)

Tell them about raising chickens. They like that.

I heard something similar.

I also heard that on SiriusXM radio this morning. Said they heard it from LSU's message board, where they also heard that Michigan was interested in Brian Kelly. I can buy the 7-day waiting period for public hires. But they show how uninformed they are with things like the Kelly interest...

People that know a lot more about football than me say Jim Leonard could come in and run Minter's defense based on his background. I'd be okay with that.

With all of the money Michigan is saving in not paying Harbaugh, would they kick the tires on Phil Parker of Iowa and see if he would be interested in a 7 figure Defensive Coordinator job?

Totally - TOTALLY - different defensive scheme. As good as Iowa has been, they've been running that defense for decades. Everyone that gets on the field has been well schooled in it. It would be brand new at Michigan, and doesn't really fit the players they have.

Jesus, can people just chill already. Relax, no need to start trimming the roster already. Enjoy our title and let things play out

Regarding the roster - I would keep every player that has been part of Team 144 on the roster for the '24 season. IF players wish to enter the portal and transfer - to get more "game time" - or, to be a graduate transfer, I wish them well.
The key - as others have noted - is to keep as much of the staff intact as possible.
Go Team 145 - Go Blue!

I've never understood that. We don't have to run around like Chicken Little and yell out that the sky is falling. But after Michigan beat Ohio State, did you say, 'Chill already. Relax, enjoy the Big Ten East Division title.'? After beating Iowa, did you say, 'Chill already. Relax, enjoy the Big Ten Championship'?
You take a moment to enjoy the accomplishment but schools like Ohio State, Alabama, Washington, Oregon, Georgia, Penn State, Texas, Ole Miss are not just sitting around waiting for Michigan to get their act together?
As Michigan was raising the National Championship trophy, do you think the Georgia fans felt better because they had back-to-back championships? No, they were upset that they couldn't compete for a third one.
As I said, the world isn't falling apart but saying sit back and relax we've already won isn't the way to go. the 23-24 season is over, it's time to start putting in the work for the 24-24 season.

The season was still ongoing after all the accomplishments you mentioned, so it was not a time for reflection.
The advice you're offering works fine for the football program itself, but we as fans have no work to do. Our worrying does absolutely nothing so, yes, I will sit back and enjoy our first NC in 26 years! The other option (worrying over things I can't control) just sounds miserable by comparison. I'll pay attention to the changes going on, but I refuse to rob myself of the gratitude and joy I feel for the team I've rooted for for 40 years. Go Blue!!

Just call yourself an insider and post crazy random shit. It works./s

The expectation seems to be that Jay Harbaugh and Minter are almost certainly going, but that Campbell, Hart, Bellamy, Newsome, Elston, Clinkscale, and Herbert are staying.
I'm sure we'll invariably lose a guy or two in the transfer portal, but the fact that Moore will be the next head coach and the continuity in the coaching staff will ensure everyone mostly sticks around. It's not a surprise to anyone that Harbaugh is going to the NFL and he's been pretty open about his interest the last three years. And it's been pretty clear to everyone that Moore is the likely successor. We also have a ton of players who came to Michigan despite our lack of NIL money compared to other teams so I don't know that they are as vulnerable to poaching on that front.

People forget how recently NIL has exploded into insanity. We would not be able to get many of those players with the same approach today.
Like it or not, we will need to adapt to "tempo" . . . NIL tempo.

This has probably been answered elsewhere, and maybe even in great depth, but I have to ask: WHY does Michigan appear to be lagging considerably compared to other “blue blood” programs when it comes to NIL?
January 25th, 2024 at 1:02 PM ^
The answer is always arrogance.
January 25th, 2024 at 9:01 PM ^
The NIL collectives associated with Michigan (since the school directly paying football players would be illegal, and not just against-pointless-NCAA-rules, but pay-to-play-and-Title-IX-violation-kind-of-illegal) focuses on current players. This gives them advantages in retention - pulling back Corum, Zinter and Keegan for 2023 was huge - but does not aid them in attracting five-star recruits out of high school.
The traditional blue-bloods have doing that for years, so they've basically just come out of the woodwork a bit. Michigan is starting its efforts focusing on NIL for players who have already worn the maize and blue.
Whether they have to change that, or perhaps just tweak it to allow for NIL support for portal players too, is an interesting question that we will get answered over the next few years.
January 25th, 2024 at 11:20 AM ^
I think since Michigan’s NIL structure is set up more to retain and reward players who stay that it’ll be less likely that there will be a mass exodus like Alabama experienced. Maybe a small handful of guys go but I’d be surprised if entrenched starters leave.

Biggest task of next head coach (Moore) is onvisouly retaining the roster and then making a great hire at DC.
2 routes for DC:
- call up John Harbaugh or Mike MacDonald
- throw an insane amount of money at Phil Parker
edit: also I’m not against promoting Clink
January 25th, 2024 at 12:15 PM ^
The first route seems to make sense to me. Hungry, smart young coaches that want to be a head coach someday has worked well lately and there could be other talent out there with more budget available for assistants, unless Warde does something completely out of left field and hires Bill Belichick or something.
January 25th, 2024 at 1:03 PM ^
I’d rally around Jim Leonard.
January 25th, 2024 at 9:25 PM ^
I would like to believe that harbaugh knows Herbert is important to the kids and not push too much to take him if he wanted to.
But would Harbaugh deny a man his dreams if Herbert wanted to go and Harbaugh was willing?

Wow such incredible insight. Thanks!
