Miles crushed Schiano...but what about Mullen?

I'll keep posting polls this week until we have an MGoBlog champ.

UPDATE: Next poll will have all non-Harbaugh options.

I'm getting the same pole (that's what she said).

If you eliminate the Harbaugh's I would love to see Gary Patterson or Kyle Whittingham.

Although a Miles/Pelini reunion in Ann Arbor sounds appealing also.

Of all the "plan c" type candidates I like McElwain the most.

There's no way Gary Patterson leaves TCU so no reason to consider that.  Kyle Whittingham is a possibility, but I still don't think he's done all that much.

McElwain?  What has he done?  10-2 at Colorado State after not playing anyone good?  Big deal.  He has accomplished far less than Hoke did before coming, and has far fewer years experience.

Patterson and Whittingham is just my non-Harbaugh wishlisht. I don't think either of them are coming.

RE: McElwain - I think fans to come to terms with the idea of neither Harbaugh, Miles, Mullen, or any other candidate in those top two tiers coming to UM. You look at the hot coaching candidates these days like Sumlin, Briles, Mullen, Gundy...instead of trying to pry them from their current/established position, go find the next guy whose on his way.

So when you look at that crop of candidates, guys like McElwain, Chuck Martin, Frost, Herman, Doeren...I prefer McElwain. I like that he learned from Saban and has CSU trending upward. I like that his offense fits the current personnel and that it's effective. CSU's offense was at the bottom of the barrel and after one transition year they've been top 20 the past two seasons. I think he's projecting to be a successful coach in college football.

I don't even care. Hoke should have been fired Saturday night, this morning at the latest, and it hasn't happened yet. This is already starting to look like "the process" and we all know how that turned out...

On a lot of levels they're all on level ground, all the same kind of qb and none of us including the new coaching staff has a clue what they're really capable of. I'm sure the new coach (whomever that is) is going to take all three guys in the spring and give them their shot and pick a winner and if its filthy ugly, start looking for a fifth year transfer.

MILES

The guy is a winner, period, and that's what we need right now. Harbaugh is first but Les is the clear number 2 in my opinion. Yes, he's 61, but shit, Saban is 63. You wouldn't take him becaue of age? Beilein is 61, but we still like him and think he'll be around for years to come. Les is clearly still young at heart and absolutely loves Michigan. He'd be welcomed as a savior and would be given a great chance to be extremely successful and round out the last decade of his career bringing Michigan back to national prominance. Mullen, while a good choice, would bring a lot more question marks than Miles and would require a greater roster overhaul to win.

We also know that Les is interested in coming back. It's been coroborated by numerous insiders and Bacon's said very plainly that Les is very interested in the job. If Harbaugh falls through, please give Les Miles the next call.

I probably agree though I've been intrigued by Mullen since he whooped us in the Gator Bowl a few years ago. He's really turned a giant turdbasket of a program into a consistent winner.

My big question about Mullen, Miles and pretty much every SEC coach is whether they can do what they do outside of the south. What I mean by that is (1) without the level of athlete they can get down there (2) Without the low admissions standards they can get away with and (3) without the look-the-other-way police/league officials/boosters/press prevalent in the south. You'd have to literally have a recruit caught taking money directly in front of an NCAA official during a live tv broadcast to get busted down there.

People often say that, but then either just leave it there or anecdotally refer to a time or two when they thought he should have managed something slightly differently. The proof is in the pudding, and he's 103-28 at LSU. That's a 74.6% winning percentage. If he's such a poor game manager, it's somehow inexplicably not affecting his on field success too much. Or maybe, just maybe, that reputation he carries is undeserved.

So we don't need to argue about it. But I've seen for myself horrible clock management by Les on a fairly regular basis. However the bottom line is our new president from Brown is not hiring a coach from the SEC that oversigns and then pulls scholarship offers. Not happening.

Want some meat to the discussion? 2005 5-2, 2006 3-2, 2007 6-2, 2008 2-3, 2009 1-3, 2010 5-2, 2011 8-1, 2012 3-3, 2013 3-2, 2014 2-2 Overall: 38-22 0.633 That's his record versus top 20 teams at LSU. So in 10 years he has lost 6 games to unranked opponents. All while compiling two wins every three games versus the top 20. Yes please.

That's absolutely crazy. This year we lost four games to unranked opponents. Six in ten years is unreal. If all we have to put up with for that kind of success is some people complaining about clock management, I think I'll get over it.

If we can't get Harbaugh, and he has refused a 10 million a year offer (nows not the time to be cheap), I will gladly take Miles...... should've happened in 2007 sigh.

Why do people keep pretending like both Harbaughs are a thing? John Harbaugh has about as much of a chance of coming as rich rod does of coming back.  Sure both could technically happen but literally nothing anyone has said for the entire year has even remotely touched on the idea of John actually leaving the ravens, let alone for it being a college job, where he has never really coached.

Wishes:

1. John Harbaugh

2. Jim Harbaugh

3. Mullen

Expectations (or expectorations):

1. Lesticles

2. Mullen

3. Dave Doeren or Todd Graham (tie)

Brian, better beef up the server. It's fixin' to melt.

I've cooled on Mullen. The reneging scholarship thing bothers me, while I also suspect this year is a bit of an outlier for Miss State. Still think he's a good coach; I'm just not as excited about him as I was before.

Les - high ceiling, low floor. Mullen- high ceiling, lower floor. Mullen has yet to prove he can replicate successful seasons much like Sumlin. If we were hiring next year and he went 10-2 or better, then I would say we consider it. Given our dire situation and the absolute zero room for chance to fuck up this hire, I would give the nod to Les miles who is much more of a sure bet to get us winning - and winning fast. For some reason, Les' quirky weird demeanor seems like it would fit right in with a lot of our fan base. So, Les. DEFINITELY LES. This is of course if Jim H. Isn't interested.

As I stated in the other thread, Harbaugh is my #1 choice without question. And I could live with Miles, I suppose. But if Harbaugh turns us down, I'd call to inquire about Bret Bielema. He's a Big Ten guy who carried on at Wisconsin very well after Alvarez, runs a scheme that fits our roster and he's improving things at Arkansas, but I can see him wanting to come back to the Big Ten to screw the Badgers (he may be a perfect fit for Nebraska since they're in the same division). Yeah he a jerk, but I want him to coach my football team, not run for Mr. Congeniality.
