CC: NFL Rooting Interests Thread

Submitted by LKLIII on
Since we are all neurotic at this point and either entirely or mostly viewing NFL games through the prism of whether it will increase our chance of landing Harbaugh, I figured one thread to discuss it would keep the board tidier than one thread on each game. So what do we want to see this week? 49ers lose (obviously); Miami win (reduces chance they'll look for a new coach); Raiders lose (they already suck but doesn't hurt to drive home the point to Harbaugh); Bears win (again less likely they dump their coach); Lions win (helps keep Niners out of playoffs); What else? Any other key games out there?

If the Lions win and 49ers lose that automatically eliminates san francisco. That would put two 10-win teams in 3 divisions, give the niners 7 losses thereby locking them out of the wild card.

So of course I want the Lions to win and the Packers to lose, but I'm also rooting for the 49ers this week. The Lions are currently the 6th seed in the NFC meaning they currently match with the 3rd seed, Philly. I'd rather match up against the 4th seed from the awful NFC South, and we'd need Seattle to lose today for the Lions to move to the 5th seed. Besides, even if the 49ers win today, when the Lions win today the playoff odds in SF are still very low. With this scenario, also root for Dallas to keep the 49ers on the short end of the wildcard hopes.

Getting the Harbaugh future train moving we need them out of the playoffs. That means the usual teams mentioned (Lions winning, etc). Yet, I'm admittedly thinking way too much about it when I say this next bit: Do we want SF eliminated by Seattle? Do we want the "end of his SF era" to come at the hands of Pete Carroll? Further, I think he is at one of 3 places next year: Michigan, Miami or Oakland. If SF trades him to a team he doesn't want he'll just walk free to CFB or say he won't sign a new deal next year with the new team. All know this. So, SF has to do something in his best interest to get something for him. I think if SF is eliminated today, we'll have some VERY substantial info by Tuesday. Just a feeling. Back to point, what do we want (if anything) out of Oakland? They are who they are and have who they have. Being so young but having pieces in place (Mack, Carr, cap room, etc) makes it a lot more attractive than their current record shows. I don't think losing or winning changes anything there. In Miami it's the same, IMO. If Jim is staying in the NFL, Ross would fire or trade Philbin to get him in a heartbeat. If Ross would truly keep Philbin on with closeout wins than we want them to win but I don't think that matters either. For the millionth time, it's going to ride on what Jim WANTS rather than who can offer what. It's not a game of wooing him for anything outside of crazy money, control & possibly a loaded roster (Miami is a HB & a few more guys away from being very good). So, gist is basically getting SF out of the playoffs ASAP to get info flowing for us. That to me only means the Lions having to win and anything but a Dallas v Philly tie getting Arizona in. Even a SF win with those happening all but guarantees they are out. The NFC is almost set already with the North very likely getting two in, one pitiful but always dangerous South team, East getting at least one of two and the West getting at least one of two: GB, Det, South, Dal & or Phi, Ari (in with anything but a tie in Dal/Phili game) & or Seattle. That's a race for the 6 spots without mentioning SF. SF has to win out and have about 12-15 outcomes go exactly their way to get in. Their out now, another loss & a Lions win this season seals it mathematically. So, I'm sticking to my thought of just cheering for Detroit. They hold the door open or shut it, IMO.

The eagles are on top of that division and the cowboys are ahead of the 49ers in the wildcard, so a cowboys win wouldn't eliminate them but it would do that little bit more make it harder for the 49ers.

Schedules of Wildcard Contenders

Contender (W-L) 12/14 12/21 12/28
Green Bay* (10-3) @Buff (7-6) @TB (2-11) Det (9-4)
Seattle (9-4) SF (7-6) @AZ (11-3) StL (6-8)
Detroit (9-4) Minn (6-7) @Chic (5-8) @GB (10-3)
Philly* (9-4) Dal (9-4) @Wash (3-10) @NYG (4-9)
Dallas (9-4) @Phil (9-4) Indi (9-4) @Wash (3-10)
SanFran (7-6) @Seat (9-4) SD (8-5) Ariz (11-3)

* Division Leader

From the 49ers perspective, San Francisco is competing with the above five teams for the two wildcard spots. Two of them will take the NFC North or NFC East champion spots. Seattle may still take the NFC West, but to do so, it would have to catch Arizona, now at 11 wins, which would eliminate SanFran from one of the two wildcard spots.

Notable:

•If SanFran loses and Detroit wins today, SanFran is eliminated, since 10-6 would become the minimum possible wildcard record.

•SanFran owns the head-to-head tiebreaker against either Philly or Dallas.

•Dallas has the more difficult remaining two games, so it is more likely to get stuck at 9 or 10 wins should they lose today. A small factor per five-thirty-eight
    http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/nfl-week-15-playoff-implications-th…

•SanFran is 0-1 vs Seattle, but has a game remaining with the Seahawks.

•SanFran plays neither Green Bay nor Detroit.

•Philly & Dallas         play 12/14 (1 sure win/loss/(tie))
•GreenBay & Detroit play 12/28 (1 sure win/loss/(tie))

Lions Win, no issue there.

I usually don't root against our former, once a Wolverine - Always a Wolverine Players to lose at anything.

How can we get what we want without rooting against Jim Harbaugh? Does anyone have the answer here.

As much as I want them elimated, I can't root against Coach Harbaugh, the guy we have been pleading with to "Come Back Home".

Being a Lions fan, obviously the Lions. As for the rest of the games, I'll just leave the Massey estimates for a select few here (full list here):

Seattle / San Francisco - 82% win probability for Seattle

Dallas / Philadelphia - 65% win probability for Philadelphia

Green Bay / Buffalo - 50% each

Chicago / New Orleans - 50% each

they need the Cowboys/Philly game to end in a W/L, not a tie. They obviously need the Packers to lose.

If the Lions wins the next two game(which they should given the schedule), they are a lock to make the playoff with 11 wins bc of the Cowboys/Eagles result.  If Lions wins out, they could potentially play for the #1 seed and clinch the NFC North title.

And of course!! When the lions have a chance to help us by knocking the niners out of the playoffs, they blow it!! They never fail to disappoint!! At least they are consistent
