CC: Ben McDaniels expected out after contract expires

Quarterbacks coach Ben McDaniels has apparently been informed that his tenure at Michigan has come to an end as his contract will not be renewed.

"According to Sam Webb of The Michigan Insider (VIP), quarterbacks coach Ben McDaniels has been informed that he won’t be returning in 2021 with his contract expiring soon. McDaniels, the younger brother of New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, has been at Michigan since joining the staff as an offensive analyst in 2018. In 2019, McDaniels was promoted to the role of quarterbacks coach."

I know we have had many threads today focused on the CC subject, but this is newsworthy as it provides concrete support to the speculation around McDaniels being out after this season.

Part of me thinks he’d have entered the portal already.

But if he’s got his eye on Alabama, no hurry with their season still not being over.

Hoping he sees what the staff shakeup looks like and likes what he sees and sticks around. Likely only one more year until the pros. Risky to go to Alabama and compete with guys almost as talented and more familiar perhaps with what they do.

I love how sure people are of things like this... leave no room for doubt or curiosity. I guess life’s easier that way, huh?

Not like Alabama got the #2 safety in the 2019 class (#43 overall), who started 4 games as a freshman and then every game this year.

Or the #8 safety in that same year and #84 player overall, or a high 4* last year, and on and on.

Ok man, thanks.

@Gent Squirrels,

You mean the supposed QB Whisperer is taking on more responsibilities? Well that's just great, it's all worked out so well thus far.

Also, to have promoted McDaniels from analyst to an important role such as QB coach just makes little sense since the QB position has been so disappointing, SMH at this program's incompetence.

I think you could argue that QB development was actually fine before 2019.

2015: Rudock improved by quite a bit by the end of the year.

2016: Speight improved by quite a bit until his collarbone snapped.

2017: Hard to evaluate with no pass blocking. Multiple QBs were injured.

2018: Patterson improved by quite a bit by the end of the year.

-----------------McDaniels hired-----------------------

2019: Patterson was terrible before he was good. He was dreadful in the bowl.

2020: Milton started the season looking okay and fell off a cliff.

Honestly, that’s a sad list from top to bottom.  The fact that we are using Rudock and Speight as “positive” examples is down right pathetic.  Lets not forget Rudock had only 1 year here.  Shea’s best year was his first year as well.  The more time he had under this regime the worse he got.  Not to mention you are only listing the starters.  Not the failed recruits who transferred or didn’t make the field.  **cough-Mccaffrey-cough**

I think Rudock and Speight are great example of good QB development. Rudock got better all year and he wasn't half bad at Iowa.

Speight was a generic oatmeal 3 star who almost didn't lose us The Game. Yes, he cratered Year 2, but maybe just maybe he blamed himself as much for that loss as some of the fans did. Athletes are just as hard on themselves as fans are. Being right in the head is just as important as the physical tools.

Since then things haven't been as positive. Harbaugh or McDaniels, that's impossible for me to tell.
