CC - The Assistants

Submitted by Magga Saraivah on

Let's assume we hit the home run and get Jim Harbaugh as our coach.  Since we will probably need to give him half of our endowment fund (/s), how much will be left for assistants ?  It would be great if he could bring in some of his current coordinators.

Brad Seely - SpecialTteams

Vic Fangio - DC

Greg Roman - OC

http://www.49ers.com/team/coaches-staff.html

My questions are:

1) How likely is it his OC/DC/ST coaches follow him here ?

2) Can we afford them ?

3) If not, any insights on who else he might bring in or promote ?

I would honestly love it if whoever came in next tried to retain Mattison and Nuss.  If not Nuss, then Mattison.  The defense has been the one consistently not horrible thing the last 4 years.  And Mattison is one of the best.

I'm not usually in favor of "everyone should go."  I like the idea of maintaining at least a couple of good guys to help with transition for the players.  Even a guy or two who could tell the new staff in private "yeah, but you can't really do that/say that/whatever here."  (WR gets the #1 type of stuff)

But right now, with as toxic as this program has been lately, I really think everyone's gotta go.  We need a fresh start.   That includes you (looks over at Adidas).

If it ends up being Harbaugh I doubt anyone is safe.  Harbaugh has said you cannot have 1 weak link on a staff so he wont create places for people to hide or stick around due to seniority.

I'd be ok with Manning sticking around and I'd like to get Montgomery back from Oklahoma.  Mostly I want excellent teachers with very high standards.  If they are younger and can relate to players better thats a bonus but thats a 3rd consideration.  Demanding excellent and ability to regurgitate knowledge in a way players can quickly process is most important.

Position coaching is the most underrated part of CFB IMO.

Whoever comes in will likely find a place for him. Everyone else is very likely gone whoever gets the job, excepting John Harbaugh..

Jim Harbaugh took nobody but his coordinators with him from Stanford to the 49ers. He's not likely to bring a bunch of NFL guys here either. I don't think we have any clues as to who he might hire. A current college HC like Mullen would probably bring most of his current staff.

Everyone, ESPECIALLY Fred Jackson must go.

But, to be serious, I wouldn't mind keeping Nussmeier.  Yeah, we've been awful.  But I can't blame him as a first year coordinator and some of the comedic turnovers or dropped passes we've had.  He's had success elsewhere, and I like his demeanor.  Basically I just believe he's a good coach despite this season.

I would keep GMat if he wanted to (and "Coach Harbaugh wanted him).  But I see this as less likely than Doug staying.  I feel like he and Jim would mesh well, and could see it as a good opportunity to jump to a HC job after 1-2 years.  Plus, we wouldn't have to pay his buyout after 1 season.

I used to be a huge defender of Mattison but I've lost a lot of faith in him this year. Its year 4, all his guys, all his assistants and the defense is 'eh'. It isn't bad, but I'm definitely not going to leap to defend him at this point

I didn't say it was the reincarnation of the 1985 defense, I said it was good enough to win if the other side of the ball wasn't horrible.  They are only giving up 23  points / game.

And if you want  to see 'absurdly horrible' turnover stats

http://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs/current/team/461/p3

There are only 3 teams that have lost more turnovers than UM right now.

This is a very average defense full of experience and running the same system for 4 years now.  It is not great and Mattison is not great.  It is ranked 10th in the Big 10 right now by defensive FEI and 6th by S&P+ rankings (and barely ahead of #7, and #8)

The expectation going into this year was UM would have the "2nd best" defensive unit in the Big 10.  It is not close.  PSU has the 1st or 2nd and MSU the other.  PSU defensive coordinator is a young guy from Yale who had Vanderbilt playing great defense with Franklin and now PSU.  I'd go try to outbid PSU for him.

I don't disagree that the defense is getting carved up, at times.

Does the FEI rankings include "psychological depression", because, to be honest, the defense has faced some unfathomable incompetence from their teammates on offense...

But as has been said earlier, I wonder how much of that has to do with Strength and Conditioning.

The one single critique of UM football overall, is that they look "soft' as all hell. Which is obviously reflective of S&C.

I'm not saying G-Matt isn't an old-timer, and he might be past his prime, but technique doesn't really seem to be a problem on defense. The DBs have looked questionable at times, and I have no doubt that favoritism and upperclassmen-bias has played a part in having Countess at CB despite his incredibly obvious, even last year, short-comings, despite more physically capable backs....

It doesnt help but look at MSU in 2012.  They had a dumbo QB, and a crap OL and basically were the Bell show.  They went 6-6 in the regular season. Their defense was top 10 nationally and all their losses were by like 1-5 pts.  Why? Because despite their crapola offense their defense played lights out.  Eventually they caved in some games but they were not getting blown to pieces like we have been by multiple teams.  They came into AA and their offense played like sh** all day but MSU's defense didnt say "well we have no chance, going to mentally check out."  If not for Denard miracle at the end they would have given up 9 pts and won 10-9.

So it is a factor our offense sucks? Sure.  But I dont see a lot of quick twitch athletes who are killing it out there.  The only guys who would have a chance to play for MSU right now are Lewis, Ryan, Clark and Henry.   That is why the gap is so far.  Mike Hull from PSU would be our best player by a country mile.  Where is our Joey Bosa?  Even Jake Ryan who was a man beast in 2012 has regressed to a "pretty solid" player from "damn Viking!" in 2012. Etc.

Not sure why Mattison continually gets a free ride when his experienced D has been getting carved up quite frequently over the past 15 games.  Plus, he's about to turn 65.

As for Nussmeier, all we've done is go backwards on offense this season  - it may not be all his fault, but he really hasn't done anything to make us believers.  It was rumored that Saban was fine with him leaving . . . I can believe that more now.

If you look at advanced stats of our opponents for offensive FEI it is even more damning.  Only MSU and Notre Dame brought even top 40 type offenses vs Michigan.  Rutgers, Minnesota, Utah are not good offensive teams.  Yet we made them all look cool.  Miami OH and App State are obviously jokes.  Indiana likewise is not the old Indiana even - they are going to be rolling out a 49th string freshman QB who had the redshirt ripped off him 2 weeks ago and basically will be Tevin Coleman against the world.  What do you think is going to happen?  Coleman is going to get 200 yards when he is the only weapon they have.

I dont think Roman will. He will pursue a head coaching job. I think Nuss could very plausibly be the OC next year. Fangio will follow Harbaugh anywhere, though.

Do any of his assistants have much college experience? It would be risky to take a large group of coaches with little to no prior college experience and ask them all to recruit at an elite level at Michigan. I know they'd obviously be able to tell kids the "I know what it takes to make it in the NFL", spiel, but a lot of college coaches have connections to territories, high schools, etc, that a NFL coach might not have. Not saying getting an assistant or two from the 49ers wouldn't be great, but getting a large portion of his current staff would be difficult to, well, accomplish, but also have make that transition into college ball. Again, this is me assuming they don't have much college experience.

I would think highly unlikely that Seely or Roman follow. Both have interests in interviewing for NFL HC positions. Fangio, I'm not as sure about. As far as affording them- Michigan can, it just depends if they will.

Mattison's a good coach. A great recruiter. He could have taken a head coaching gig if he wanted to. He probably won't stick around if Brady's gone, unless, maybe, John Harbaugh is hired. He'll have more offers than he know what to do with. It is unlikely that we will find anyone of his caliber and experience as a coordinator.

if you think that MIchigan offense is bad last year at huddle and with play clock management. He's probably just as bad.  He is not utilizing the 49ers to the best of their talent IMO.  He sometimes forgot that he has Frank Gore. In some of the 49ers losses, Gore barely got the ball at 2nd half.

For OC co offensive cordinators with Nuss and Tyrone Wheatley. I like what State did with that and we're most likely not going to be able to get Wheatley if we offer him just the RB coach position.
