Cade or J. J.?

Submitted by Hail2UM83 on October 3rd, 2021 at 3:20 PM

My friend and I were having our weekly post game chat and this subject came up. I think J.J. Starts by end of season but it won’t be because Cade is bad but J.J. Is just that good. I didn’t see this post, but I was curious about other fan opinions.

Oh man I feel your you. The amount of negs coming your way…

As for who starts, I think Cade would have to have 2 Milton-like games of just overall bad play before they consider it.

Even then, it would be a stretch. Next year may be different, but Cade is the starter for the season barring total ineptitude.

Looked to me like JJ came in to run read option.  Obviously later he threw the bomb.  I'm guessing the bomb was to make future defenses think about over playing the read option when JJ comes in.

Devin Gardner talked on a past Monday morning qb, about how they had certain packages for him and his skill set as a qb when Denard was here.  He said Denard embraced it because it was a little less on Denard's plate.  Hopefully the current situation is similar.

I agree with that, but they could’ve also run these packages in the previous 4 games where it wasn’t as risky. The fact they chose to do it to start the 3rd quarter in this game tells me they wanted to see JJ when the game was still very much in limbo in a pretty hostile environment. Maybe I’m reading too much into it. Either way, the job should remain Cade’s unless he shows he’s not capable (which I don’t expect)

Cade just won in a place we haven't won in 20 years. He made some incredible plays doing so.

JJ is going to be great but its the Cade show right now. Lets try to enjoy it.

Cade won in Madison because Wisconsin put up 150 yards of meaningful offense.

If Cade had lost that game he would have run out of town.

Please put in the QB who is more talented and likely to benefit the most from the experience, like every other successful team in CFB does.

JJ looks to be great, he's also only attempted 1 pass against Big Ten competition. It's not like he won't develop if he doesn't play as a potential red shirt freshman...why mess up an undefeated formula?

This isn't a beauty contest.  Sure JJ looks better out there from a mechanics standpoint both running and throwing.  But, how well does JJ know the playbook?  How good is he at going through his progression or reading the defense pre-snap?  What is he like as a leader? ...  Much more than mechanics behind who should play.

This is obtuse, how many people expected the offense to put 30+ on a very good defense for Wisconsin? You are acting as though the offense only managed to do just enough to win, they did more than that, they did enough to blow the doors off Wisconsin in non garbage time.

He’s trying to say JJ has more zip on his throws. Which, he does. The Wheel route to Edwards, if thrown at the same time, would have been completed if JJ had thrown it. That ball simply hung up in the air too long and the safety was able to make a play on it. Cade is great at deep throws because putting air under his throws isn’t a negative in that area. But it has held him back in the intermediate passing game at times.

The flip side of that, as mentioned, is there’s no way of knowing whether JJ would have made the same read in the same amount of time. But if the question is between which QB has more zip on his throws and whose ball gets there quicker, the answer is certainly JJ. Now that doesn’t inherently mean JJ is a better QB, but there’s certainly moments where you need more zip on the throws than Cade has put on them.

Cade had a really solid performance on the road against an outstanding defense. He's undefeated as a starter, hasn't turned the ball over yet, avoids drive-killing sacks, and hits big passing plays when we need them. Let's not do the Milton thing where we get drunk on potential. JJ will have his time.

There is no comparison between Milton and McCarthy. Are Michigan fans really so used to and expecting mediocrity that they can’t see the difference? Milton was a borderline recruit who had a strong arm but was considered, from the beginning, to be a project. As we have seen, McCarthy has the tools and skills of a 5 Star. Why does everyone think OSU has been pasting Michigan for years? Guess what? It isn’t coaching. It’s been OSU’s stockpile of elite talent. We’ve already seen enough to know that McCarthy is legit. His tools are far better than McNamara’s. That’s not a knock on McNamara, who’s a capable college QB. It’s just a fact. It’s the coach’s job to play the best players, even if it means replacing someone who hasn’t done anything wrong.  It’s why Saban replaced Championship QB Hurts with Tua. Harbaugh knows this and the move is coming.

And if Harbaugh makes that move, it will be at the right time for the right reasons. It may happen. Not stating that it won't. But YOU have no idea whether JJ is ready yet. That is my point. And Cade is definitely ready.

As for your other point:

It isn’t coaching. It’s been OSU’s stockpile of elite talent.

Both points are contrary to what a fairly larger number of armchair QBs have been saying! WOnder if you have been one of them but have no interest in going through your posting history to find out! I see enought of you in every thread Mrs McCarthy!

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. There could potentially be a point where you need to bring in JJ for whatever reason but you cross that bridge when you get there.

I'll add that it's great to see the coaches finding meaningful snaps for J.J. while games are still competitive.

As he continues to improve, they should continue finding those opportunities for real game experience with the 1s, while Cade remains the starter due to his ability to lead the team down the field.

I wouldn't alternate drives or quarters or anything like that. It's too much psychological pressure, and besides, Cade has been really good for us leading the offense.

But sharing a few snaps for talent development purposes and because J.J. brings a bit of a different element when he's on the field, does really make a lot of sense in this situation.
