"Big 10 Refs are bad and they should feel bad" (Basketball Edition)

All I have to say has been said in the title.

Wow.

Sorry your potentially awesome game was painfully taken away from you, Ace. On behalf of the MGoBlog community, we hope you'll feel better soon.

No matter what calls they made, the refs successfully ruined that game. Haven't had that much fun watching tv in quite a while until about 6 seconds left in the game when the refs decided to intervene.

that was the early game of the year in the conference for the first 39:50.

Then in the last ten seconds we had a super long replay get overturned that probaly zero Purude fans live would have even thought was the wrong call.  Then a ticky-tack foul to end it.

What happened to letting them play?  How do we not get calls at home when we get fucked on the road repeatedly?

Just a sad way to end a great game.  Send them to OT and let them play five more.

Make being a referee a full time job and hold these idiots accountable for actually being, you know, good referees.

To have so many big moments and big games marred by terrible referring is borderline criminal.

why this is not the case.

I'm not a big sports person, I admit.

But this seems pretty basic, just from a management / accountabilty point of view.

Especially when so much is -- let's be honest -- riding on these games. Futures, etc.

And so much profit being made...

Ridiculous.

But we always just bitch.

There needs to be some strategizing happening. By someone in position to strategize...

... this is a smart board. Can't someone figure out how to turn up the heat?

The current setup is perfect for the conferences. Referees are independent contractors, meaning the conferences don't have to pay for their travel or insurance. Outside of the biggest games and the NCAA Tournament, pay is garbage. Most of these guys are dramatically overworked -- they'll often do 25+ games in a 20 day span (and a lot of times those games aren't even in the same region).

Officiating is a full-time job with a part-time salary and no benefits. And most of these guys actually have full-time jobs outside of officiating. So, most people are turned off by the idea of making a substantial personal investment just to get a job where they'll be exceptionally overworked and underpaid.

It's also difficult to qualify as an NCAA-approved official. So, few end up with the desire to do the job, and out of the people who are left, even fewer actually have the ability. It's incredibly insular.

Now throw in the fact that it's wildly seniority-driven. The guys who have been around the longest get the best assignments. There's no "grading" or objective evaluation. If you want to officiate in the Final Four, you need to have seniority.

So, just like McDonalds has no incentive to spend billions of dollars to replace its minimum-wage-earning front of the house crew members with automated robots, conferences like the Big Ten have no incentive to drop a boatload of money into full-time professional officials.

This is almost as disgusting as the game in 2016. I feel a pit in my stomach. I'm betting on Jay Harbaugh fucked Delaneys daughter or something. Because the disrespect and blatant disregard to rules is no longer angering. It is turning into a fucking joke

help in this case, because those were probably the correct calls.

But human refs have the choice not to decide the outcome when it's as weak/in doubt as that.  They swallow the whistle 90 percent of the time because it's better basketball when guys actually make plays to win a game rather than get a win essentially given to them.

Put in his application to replace TV Ted as the worst ref tonight. He called a touch foul on Teske and let Purdue knock Mathews down with an elbow. That was deplorable. Haas can grab Wagner by the shirt but Moe can't reach around Haas. It's bullshit. Why does it seem like we are the only team NOT to get the benefit of some home court reffing? To have that game stolen from the kids after they made that incredible comeback is a crying shame. (PU was also the beneficiary of some 3 point luck.) Let's go on a run and finish 13-5 in the conference. I think that is doable with the improvements from Z and Livers. Just got to improve at the FT line.

Perfect way to wash away the stench of that loss.

Also, there's enough blame to go around.  Our offense was obviously stuck near the end and we had two timeouts left.  Why not call one with 15 seconds left and draw up a final play?  Also, why not put a big guy on the inbounder...Either time?
