"Big 10 Refs are bad and they should feel bad" (Basketball Edition)
All I have to say has been said in the title.
Wow.
Sorry your potentially awesome game was painfully taken away from you, Ace. On behalf of the MGoBlog community, we hope you'll feel better soon.

you do NOT call that with 4 seconds left in a tie game. Michigan stole that inbound. The game is towon by players not the refs.
January 9th, 2018 at 11:38 PM ^
I wouldn't call that and don't think they should have. They have a valid case to make in calling that foul on Wagner (not a good one, but one none the less). The other calls, no those were unexcusable.

Unfortunately, they would probably still find a call to screw Michigan

Refs suck, but it's not a coin flip situation where we get jobbed 50% of the time and lucky the other half.
We just seem to get fucked by Delaney's henchmen.
January 9th, 2018 at 11:33 PM ^
We should leave. Started as a joke, but I'm starting to take it more seriously with each hosejob.

Fuck Jim Delany

Michigan's OL didn't get called for holding either and was getting similarly destroyed.
January 9th, 2018 at 11:28 PM ^
Refs probably screwed M but they definitely ruined the end of the game.
What a shame for such an excellent game to finish that way.

Enough is enough. Preferably, Warde. I get we don't want a Dave Brandon showboat, but I didn't ask for this yes man shadowy figure either. He needs to speak up for his program that keeps getting screwed in both sports. Other Big Ten schools will most likely follow. It needs to be addressed.

I miss Jim Hackett already. Like there was an aura around Hackett that was excellecne and domicnace: everything he touched and worked on was valiant. Throw some Michigan money his way and get him out of Ford to lead our athletic department again!

I don't know, but sometimes there are guys that people know not to F*@% with, and Hackett seemed to be that guy. Warde seems a little more passive. Of course I have no real knowledge, this is just people watching and hearing how they talk and carry themselves. No knock on Warde (who I think is a good AD) but Hackett had a bad ass approach. Maybe it's cause he got us Nike and Harbaugh back in less than a year so I view him as such.

Propose change to the current system. Get them to stop counting their billions and use some of that money to hire full-time refs. Implement a system where they get penalized for bad calls. It's not difficult. Things will continue if no one brings up the issue though.
January 9th, 2018 at 11:45 PM ^
Refs do get judged and critiqued on their performances, least at the high school level. If you get even a negative reputation you're black balled from the competative, important games and conferences. You could get fired and never be asked to ref varsity games if you get enough complaints from people and fellow refs. I don't know why college football and basketball don't hold their refs and officlas more accountable for their performaces. Something needs to change.

The old man can't "retire" fast enough. Sick of this bullshit.
January 9th, 2018 at 11:31 PM ^
WTF - we all know it happens in football, but now in basketball ? That was absolutely the most pathetic example of giving one team the victory I have ever witnessed. 6 seconds - our ball. If JB doesn't call timeout they don't review that play - and not one replay gave 100% proof - so the play is suppose to stand. But fuck no - not if you want Michigan to lose.
Just fuck the B1G !!

While the two calls at the end were technically right, they were far from obvious and pretty unlikely Purdue gets both most of the time. More worrisome is that throughout the game every single bad call, besides maybe 1, went in Purdue's favor, some of them big swings.
Refs handed Boilermakers the game. Right up there with the bball game at Minnesota last season. Or even OSU 2016 football.
January 9th, 2018 at 11:33 PM ^
Although I will say, if something takes 5 min to review, by law it's not indisputable.
January 9th, 2018 at 11:36 PM ^
The out of bounds call was not technically right unless were completely reinterpreting the rule. EVERY time a ball gets slapped out of a player's hand, it's going to touch his hand last. It's common sense. Taking five minutes to magnify the play and review it from every angle to see whose fingernail touched it last is not how the rule is called in any other situation. It's a joke.
January 9th, 2018 at 11:43 PM ^
In a vacuum at super slow-motion you might be right. Watch any game and neither call gets made ever.
Look at the game right before Michigan. Kentucky's player totally grabbed the A&M player on the final play without a call. Refs always let a little more contact go at the end and generally favor the home team at least slightly. The out-of-bounds play comes down to physics also - Purdue slapped the ball out of his hand and a millisecond later is not the correct judgment of that play.
Being a ref is hard. Basketball 50-50 calls are impossible. Usually they even out over the course of a game. In this case every single 50-50 call went to Purdue. Every call on Wagner was light. The phantom moving screen on Teske. No calls on any of their screens to free up their shooters.
Just crap. Simple change - replay gets shown for 60 seconds and if they haven't decided by then it defaults to the on-court call.

Tough one. I am still waiting for us to get some home cooking calls from the refs one of these days. In the meantime we will see the same crap on Saturday in East Lansing.
