...tear it apart. I intentionally tried NOT to put guys at multiple positions in the same position group.

We know Barnhart would be the backup RT (and LT)...because he was starting there when Mayfield was out, we know Ross would be the backup MLB, etc.

Yeah, this phenomena goes back across multiple HCs.  JMFR dominated the spring game before starting.  Bush made some big hits on special teams his true freshman year before starting.  Devin Gardner got snaps and made plays before starting.  Mayfield & Hayes got snaps when guys when down and showed they can play.  McCaffrey & Milton both made plays last year as backups with both their arms and feet.  Hurst, Winovich, Uche, etc. all made plays as backups.  Nothing against VanSummren because he looks like a Greek God.  But, he's never played LB at UM so far and his snaps at RB/FB have been meh.  I'd be really surprised he makes significant contributions.  Some guys have started the season only to be displaced later by younger guys after they didn't do much.  I could see that happening, but I'd be surprised if he turns out to contribute much.

Well Rush is Uche's specialty role and SLB is Noah Furbush's role. So you say starter, but it doesn't mean he's actually starting. It just means he's basically the FB for McGrone so he can blitz and keep OL off of him.

But Furbush never played every down.

Losing Nico is going to really hurt Milton in year 1. We have 1 WR on the roster taller than 6’1. One!! There is so throw it up under pressure guy. Milton is going to have to fit it into right windows. Most of our WRs (Sanristil, Jackson, Henning) are under 5’10

I think this team looks "good" but with some definite, and serious holes and unknowns...more than I'd want to see. I figured this would be a pretty decent year but not great, however, I also figured they'd be coming off a 11-13 win season which would have made a "little less" of a year more palatable.

I like the young talent and that makes me excited but looking at the roster, other teams challenges, etc. I could see anything from 4-5 to 7-2.

The quarterback play will likely be the determining factor overall (insert "no crap" comment here)

Yes, this is stating the obvious, but I believe QB play will determine all of the close games this year.  If Milton or even McNamara struggle with turnovers (fumbles or INTs), we'll be a 4 win team.  If QB play is surprisingly good, we'll be a 6 win team.  If we find the next Josh Allen, this season will be a lot of fun but still probably won't go better than 7 wins.

The fan consternation remains most remarkable. Michigan has recruited well enough to be in the big hunt. The depth chart is fine-even outstanding. Talent must be fully and properly employed and potential realized. It may be (legitimately) argued that, in the Harbaugh era, Michigan has never beaten a team that is better than they are...well-coached teams routinely do this. The issue for Michigan has been and remains coaching. Scheme and in-game adjustments are the issue here. This team has enough physical talent to win an NC.

I suspect we're going to see a lot of zone this year.  We saw more of it last year than we had in the previous two years combined, and we don't have the corner's that can shut down WRs without help.

Nonetheless, this is the year that the offense has to start pulling its weight.  If the O can't consistently put up 40 points against everyone - including OSU and Alabama - it's a lost cause.  Today's college football is about offenses that outscore teams, not defense.  Rules, schemes, and rules favor offense, and it isn't fair to expect any defense to hold a good offense under 35.  That was a given in 1985, but it's not 1985 anymore...

Michigan's fortunes will ride or die on its QB and CB play this year. This is the first year since Harbaugh showed up that we don't have a single proven, reliable corner. There's always been a Jordan Lewis, LaVert Hill, David Long, Ambry Thomas, or Channing Stribling back there to man the fort and lock down at least one side of the field to everyone who wasn't OSU. This year......yeesh. Mostly guys who are just that: guys. And then unproven true freshmen or redshirt freshmen who could very well turn into the next stud, but are a year or two away from that. I can see Michigan seriously struggling in Game 1 against a very good Minnesota passing attack, solidifying a bit through the remainder of the season, and then getting eviscerated for ~350-400 passing yards by OSU.

And then QB.....man, I don't know. If Milton has put it all together he could be seriously good. If he hasn't improved much or at all from where we saw him last year, we're going to end up in a lot of games, just like 2013 and 2014, where the defense is absolutely gassed by the start of the fourth quarter because the offense can't stay on the field, and Michigan loses some games it should otherwise win.

I'll take the average and assume he's improved somewhere between a marginal and moderate amount. Good enough to beat the Rutgers, Marylands and Indianas of the world on his own, probably good enough to beat MSU because they're so depleted, but needing serious help to beat the Wisconsins, Penn States, Minnesotas, and OSUs of the world.

Looks pretty strong outside of WR/CB which are talented but inexperienced. Hopefully they get coached up and exceed expectations!

OL pecking order from the Gattis presser - the order in which he discussed them:

  • Vastardis, Hayes, Stueber (Mayfield was not yet granted waiver), Filiaga, Barnhart, Keegan, Carpenter, Attebury (did not mention Jones).

Typically, they chose 6-8 "starters" who get most of the pre-game reps.  Right now the two deep looks like the following:

  • LT ... Hayes / Mayfield or Stueber
  • LG ...  Filiaga / Keegan or Barnhart
  • C ... Vastardis / Carpenter
  • RG ... Stueber / Barnhart or Keegan
  • RT ... Mayfield / Stueber or Barnhart

The versatile guys are Stueber and Barnhart, who appear to be taking reps at both OT and OG.

Full contact camp will determine the true starters ... who performs the best and stays the healthiest during camp.  There is going to be some full-on contact as Gattis said they need to develop a game-ready physical mindset (i.e. some butt-kicking is going to happen in camp to see who can hack it and get nasty).

Thanks, looks good to me. Lot of question marks BUT lots of talent on the roster too, opportunities for younger guys to become dudes.

The roster as a whole is pretty young and full of top 500 players, given that this could be thought of as a "developmental" season per Sam Webb, I'm excited to see who breaks out. So many candidates - Milton, Charbonnet, Evans, any of the WR corps, Eubanks, Hinton, Barrett, Dax, seems like a lot of guys have the chance to go from unheard of outside Michigan circles to all-B1G
