Beilein & Izzo's Demeanor Towards Players

Submitted by Occam's Razor on

I've noticed a trend in a lot of MSU games that Izzo benches his premiere players for random weird guys for 10-20 minutes a game (anyone find JJJ yet?) even to the detriment of the team.  On top of that, he goes ballistic whenever his players make mistakes.

Beilein on the other hand lets the players go through the ups and downs and even plays different combinations of players especially earlier in the season much to the chagrin of the fanbase. You also never see him get in the kids' faces and scream at them.

It seems kind of obvious that these kids respond better to learning on the job even if it costs us a few games early on rather than getting screamed at for small mistakes and benched in big moments.

This couldn't be more accurate. I've seen that reasoning referenced multiple times, but this is th first time I actually went to look at the numbers.

JJJ fouled out 5 times this year, but failed to reach the 25 minute mark in any of those games. Adding to that point is when he was able to play 25+ minutes in a game (13 games), it was only once (Michigan) against a tournament team.

He benched JJJ so that he would not be so prominent, his draft stock would drop, and he'd go later in the first round, thereby assuring he'd land on a much better team. Pure selfless genius. Sacrificing his own legacy and MSU's chances in the game for the good of his players.

The point, at that point, is that he can just blame the players...lack of effort, weird guys, didn’t want it bad enough, and on and on and on. It’s the perfect cycle that when it pays off, he has put away enough benefit of the doubt and good will that the fan base swallows his smug excuses whole and joins him in shitting on the players, or anything else Izzo says bc it couldn’t possibly be him...

In fairness to Izzo, JJJ looked pitiful today. Not the type of guy that has success against that zone. But yeah, Izzo is really not that good of a coach, I feel like guys get worse the longer they stay under his coaching umbrella.

This just goes to show that you likely didn't play much basketball and don't know much about basketball strategy. Breaking a 2-3 zone like that is done by working through the man at the FT line. He needs to be able to shoot a mid range jumper, hit a pass, or drive. 3's are not the only way to beat a zone, matter of fact settling for 3's is a surefire way to lose against a zone unless your team is on fire that day. JJJ is a perfect player for this position. Miles bridges would be a great player for this position as well.

For playing him out of position. Like the other poster said, he should have been in the low post. They had so many second chances but few second chance points. JJJ can finish at the rim. But it's not just about offense. If he played 28-30 minutes, maybe they hold Syracuse below 50 and win. With Carter's knee problem, he was no threat on defense to block shots. JJJ was Big 10 DPOY and he played 15 minutes. Bizarre. Izzo out-dumbed himself.

While I agree JJJ didn't look great today, I completely disagree that he isn't the type of guy that has success against that zone. He has the perfect skill set to put in the middle and kill a zone like that. Unfortunately for him he didn't execute well today when he did play.

We may have seen Izzo coach his last game. Essentially a home game. And they crapped the bed when it mattered most. He may be stepping down in disgrace if the Feds keep poking around. Dantonio won't be far behind. But I'd like to see JH kick his arrogant ass a few times first.

Ben Carter played 23 minutes. 7 more than Ward and 8 more than Jackson. Carter hasn’t played 10+ minutes in a game before this weekend since the end of November. Jackson didn’t have a good game, but he still brought down 8 boards. Ward played good on offense, going 4-5 from the floor and drawing a few fouls. The two combined for only 5 fouls. Kenny Goins 3 minutes stint resulting in a turnover, awful shot and awful foul. That game was all on Izzo.
