Beilein on Duncan Robinson

Submitted by champswest on
"He could play anywhere from the point to the five-man," Beilein said this spring. "He's got the length to play on the right side (at forward). He's got ball skills to play the left side and he can play in the backcourt because he sees over everybody." The Freep article also confirms he set a new UM record in the 50 in 5 drill with 83 made 3-pointers and has added 16 pounds (up to 207) thanks to Camp Sanderson.

He can play all 5 positions? Beilein makes him sound like Lebron lol

Notice no comments regarding his defense either. 207 lb, 21 year old Duncan Robinson is guarding 4s and 5s? lol ok. I seriously doubt he is fast enough to guard 1 or 2s either.

Personally, I see him getting spot minutes next year. He will be a rotation guy the 2 years after but he is no Stauskas.

There's no point in trashing the kid before he has even played one game. Maybe he is a better defender than you think, thus Beilein can have him play the 5. He might be a better defender than Donnal in that spot for all we know. Maybe he can defend the point.

We haven't seen him play, and Beilein has. I think we can put some trust in 30 plus years of experience.

Look, I get that you think that you know everything about basketball and that your opinion is the only valid one, but, and I say this with all due respect, you're a fucking idiot. I'm guessing you haven't been to any practices and I'm guessing you have never actually watched Robinson play, so excuse me if I don't take your word as gospel. You showing a minute and a half of game film from two years ago, most of which Robinson is playing zone, doesn't prove anything, especially not what you intended it to. I get that you want him to be a bad defender because that is what you do....you play the eternal pessimist on every player you don't think is worthy enough of a scholarship....but that youtube clip says more about your bias in proving a point than it does about Robinson's defensive ability.

Ha, I don't care what you link to. It will be from 2 years ago. I guess if you think a true freshman won't get better defensively, then great, go ahead and link whatever you want. Stauskas wasn't a great defensive player his sophomore year and he managed to win B10 player of the year. I'm not saying Robinson will be an amazing defender, but I think you are overblowing his defensive capabilities. Which isn't surprising, as when you decide you want to make a point, you won't really listen to anything, you will just keep saying you're right. I remember when you wouldn't stop saying Chatman would be much better in B10 play because he was highly ranked and athletic and he would most surely "get it." I'm not holding my breath that if Robinson is really good next year that you'll somehow admit you were wrong.

You shouldn't have to apologize for not being s complete homer. And no you weren't talking trash. 6'8'' and 207 is skinny as hell and in no way should sniff the 4 spot let alone the 5. It's like we forget that defense and rebounds are part of the game. All 5 positions for an NiT team maybe... Some ppl are saying decker is a comparable? Jesus. Dekker is a great athlete. Would be behind only perhaps Dawkins on our current team - yes including levert and Irvin. Everyone needs to chill on the d3 hype train. if we are lucky we get frosh year Stauskas or Irvin from this kid next year. If we are lucky.

if we are lucky he will stand in the corner and get open 3s like Stauskas did as a Freshman? Since he's already broken Stauskas' record I don't think we will need much luck. Of course he could be a worse defender but that's hard to imagine.

Hitting threes in practice with nobody guarding you is one thing; If Robinson can hit a three in an actual game with a guy as big as he is with as much or more talent in his face, that's the real test

Definitely good to hear, not that we should expect anything less from Beilein.  With LaVert and Walton back from injuries and all the freshman coming back with a good year of experience under them, our depth looks good and we should all be excited for Michigan basketball this year!  Go Blue!

Watching Robinson's tape from Williams reminded me of a less athletic Steve Novak from Marquette from about 10 years ago. Run to a spot up position on the break, able to take bigger players off the dribble when the floor is spaced well. Able to hit big shots as the second or third option. I don't think he plays as big a role as Novak did on those Marquette teams because there is a lot of other talent on Michigan's roster, but having that skill set on the team will still be helpful over the next three years.

I think I will just wait to see how Robinson performs during actual games. I am off the Beilein hype train.

Well FWIW, I recently asked my team manager friend how the rest of Duncan's game was aside from shooting and he said "limited."

Well obviously Beilein is saying otherwise. He's at practice every day and my guy wasn't always there. Also it was just the question and answer just as I wrote it with nothing more in depth. Sometimes if we talk more about something I get a different impression than the first thing he says.

Regardless, even if he is "just" a shooter, he told me last year that Duncan was the best shooter he's ever seen, which includes Nik, so that's not such a bad thing. Also, someone above mentioned that he hasn't had to shoot over a guy his size in his face, but I don't think too many 6'8 or bigger guys will be out in his face when he's in 3 pt land.

"He could play anywhere from the point to the five-man,"

Yep... and so could I.

I'd be horrendous, but I could play anywhere from the point to the five-man.

This kid would get eaten alive at the 4 or 5. If he's getting any significant minutes there, we're in big trouble.
