Beilein on Duncan Robinson

Submitted by champswest on
"He could play anywhere from the point to the five-man," Beilein said this spring. "He's got the length to play on the right side (at forward). He's got ball skills to play the left side and he can play in the backcourt because he sees over everybody." The Freep article also confirms he set a new UM record in the 50 in 5 drill with 83 made 3-pointers and has added 16 pounds (up to 207) thanks to Camp Sanderson.

Well if we're playing THAT game I prefer to think that Beilein has found himself a player with the defensive skills of Gary Grant, the outside shooting of Glenn Robinson, the rebounding ability of Chris Weber whose ability to hit shots in the clutch reminded him of Trey Burke with an enthusiam for the game rivaled only by Mitch McGary.

Ooops.    You are exactly right.

Too bad I didnt say the inside scoring threat of Glenn Robinson.  Then I could claim I MEANT to do it - was just thinking of other great B1G players whose son's played for us.

Good catch.

Beilein has raised the bar on expectations for Michigan basketball.  That means there is going to have to be a steady supply of players as good as Stauskas, Burke, et al.  I think Robinson could match or surpass Stauskas as a pure shooter due to having a bit more length, but we won't know until we see him in Big Ten competition.

So like you'll chose the focus on the one guy in recent history that didn't live up to the hype? A RS frosh no less. Honestly though, there's not reason to hype Robinson at this point; UM is flush at his positions. Donnal hype could be treated more cautiously considering there was no one else on the roster except a 6'7" benchwarmer and true freshman.

Exactly. It's ridiculous how many people have not only given up on Donnal after his redshirt freshman year, but also somehow blame Beilein for the hype he got last year. Our fans have dumb expectations for the basketball team. It's the reason why people gave up on Chatman as well. Ugh

So we should have been reasonable about Donnal who was a redshirt freshman, but we should be ecstatic about a D3 transfer? Please.

I'll wait until I see it. This board seems to think we'll magically be a B10 favorite next year when we didn't even make the NIT and don't have UK calibur players in the stockroom. Let's temper expectations.

So how good do you think Wisconsin would have been without Dekkar and Kaminsky last year? Would MSU have made the dance last year without Trice and Dawson? Considering they were on the bubble going into the last 2 or 3 weeks of the season, I'm guessing they would have had plenty of trouble making the NIT. Also, Walton and Levert are UK caliber players we get next year that we didn't have last year. I'm just curious who you think is drastically better than UM next year?

We didn't make the NIT because Walton and Levert weren't playing the 2nd half of the year. So we should just say that these guys are all going to suck because if we say they're good then we're a homer? After we went to two elite 8s with guys we were homers about being excited about? The so called "realists" aren't any more real than the "homers". Remember how being on the Harbaugh to Michigan train in November was being a homer because he'd never leave the NFL for Michigan, his wife wouldn't leave the Bay Area etc. etc. The kid just broke Stauskas' record.

It's reasonable to be wary of excessive hype and high expectations. Mark Donnal’s performance last season proved that it’s much harder to be a starter than a scout team player. Donnal went from starting at the beginning of the season to an end-of-the-bench fouling machine at the end of the season.

Keep in mind that Duncan Robinson is a year older (and about 30 pounds lighter) than Mark Donnal; and while Robinson (a) was chosen as Division III Rookie of the Year during his year at Williams College, (b) led his team to the Division III championship game, and (c) broke Nik Stauskas’ record for most three-point shots made during a five-minute practice session at Michigan, he has yet to play in a Division I game.

Because of his performance last season, entering this coming season, Donnal probably will have fairly low expectations, so any positive contributions he can make should be welcome. If he can exceed those reduced expectations, much like Aubrey Dawkins and Muhammad-Ali Abdur- Rahkman did last season, then that will be welcomed. If he becomes little more than a scout team player who saves regular rotation players from foul trouble, while he continues his own excessive fouling, then, if he wants to continue playing college basketball, he may find himself having to travel the reverse route that Duncan Robinson took, and heading to a Division III school.

As far as John Beilein is concerned, for both Duncan Robinson and Mark Donnal, it's probably understandable that he'll be hoping for the best.

When you’re thinking that Mark Donnal is a freshman or that Duncan Robinson is a sophomore, consider that (a) Donnal took a redshirt year at Michigan before playing last season and (b) Robinson played a year of postgraduate basketball at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire before he played a year at Williams College.

Most of Donnal’s high school classmates should be entering their junior year of college in August or September, and most of Robinson’s high school classmates should be entering their senior year of college in August or September.

Senior-to-be Caris LeVert is four months younger than Duncan Robinson.

I wouldn't read too much into anything. It's like when Brandon was about to get canned and all of the coaches said they loved him.

Adidas is paying michigan a lot of money. It's probably best if all of the coaches publicly say they love Adidas and the AD to look like they are considering other companies, if for no other reason than to keep Adidas honest.

Also, if the AD chooses Nike for less money, than the school has to make up for the shortfall. Every penny is dedicated to something. I'm not even sure if it's legal for a public institution to do so. It could appear that something shady went on.

I have no doubt that the players and coaches loved Brandon. He made sure they had the best of facilities, that the coaches were well paid and that the student athletes' experience was first class. What he screwed up was everything fan-related, which honestly doesn't impact the players or coaches while they are at UM.

The only coach I've heard first-hand information about regarding how they felt toward Brandon is Red Berenson, who supposedly despised him. Obviously Hoke was a big fan since Dave paid him literally 3x as much as any other athletic department in the country would even dream of giving him.

Certainly, his popularity among current football players continued the suspicion (fair or not) that our squad was pampered and operated in a country club setting.

http://michigan.247sports.com/Board/59424/Contents/Michigan-to-Nike-371… A very credible source on 247 was saying.. "It's a pitch. Michigan meets with Nike Monday morning. Then meets with adidas Monday night and all day Tuesday" "All I know is that adidas is throwing out the red carpet on this one. They are meeting with Harbaugh and 12 other people from Michigan." "They are the last pitch. I can also tell you that Beilein is on board with staying with adidas."

He was very successful in D3, averaging some 17 or 18 ppg as a freshman, playing against guys a few years older. D3 is a higher level than almost all HS bball, and his stats were better than a lot of top recruits.

Having him come in for 10-15 minutes a game and take a few threes could be a perfect spark for this team. Last year we had no one on the bench that could hit a three consistently.

Some are hyping this kid to be the next Stauskas. We would be very fortunate if he could play at that level. I actually think he could end up more like a Sam Dekker if he puts on 10-15 pounds. Regardless, if he beat Nik's shooting record, that is saying A LOT!

Think about how many great shooters Beilein has had. Burke, Hardaway, Stauskas, Novak, Douglass, LeVert, Irvin, Dawkins, Walton, Albrecht, etc. Duncan Robinson might be the best shooter out of all those guys. If he can just be solid in other aspects of his game, he will be very lethal offensively.
