I've just watched some film of him and he's a nice player. He's definitely tall and holds his weight well, moves ok, and has good hands. However, there isn't much evidence of his defense and most of his scoring comes on put backs and dump offs against completely overmatched Connecticut competition. Doesn't seem to stretch the floor at all or have much of a post arsenal either. Would be curious to see some film of him in EYBL or something similar.

With that said, I think with some mentoring from Juwan and time with Camp Sanderson he could be a solid 4 year big for us.

Blows my mind how Hunter Dickinson was only ranked 10-15 spots higher than Clingan given he was much more of a complete player against better competition

yeah.  Not the skillset of Dickinson either.  Misses 5 shots an inch from the basket multiple occasions before finally getting one in. Needs to get more aggressive, stronger and better touch. DUNK THE BALL SON YOUR 7 FOOT!

But what a nice frame.  This would be a perfect 4 year project for Howard.  Would be a very good starter by his junior year and serviceable backup early.

Good summary.

I have faith in Coach Juwan Howard to do wonders for any halfway decent big. (Look at how far Austin Davis has come.) I think Colin Castleton should've stayed at Michigan but he's doing reasonably well at Florida now.

I'll say this: Clingan is much further ahead than Teske was and Teske turned out to be a very good (though sometimes inconsistent) player. He needed a few years to develop but his emergence changed us.

Not everyone is Hunter Dickinson and ready to dominate from month #1. (Ex: Mitch McGary didn't turn it "on" until the NCAAT. McGary's sudden explosion was a big reason we finished national runner-up.)

If the classes were re-ranked, Hunter Dickinson would easily be a 5 star and probably a top 10 player.

The video you're watching was likely his sophomore season. So he is probably 15 or 16 years old and has had a year and a half of development since then.

I haven't seen Hunter Dickinson's sophomore highlight tape but I imagine it was less impressive than his senior tape. Not to mention, comparing every Centers college readiness to Hunter Dickinson is a tad unfair. There aren't lots of Hunter Dickinson's coming around.

I mean...every recruit has their own interests and motivations. But I'll be damned if there's a better resume currently than Michigan. You look at what he did with Bam Adebayo first, then at Michigan with what he has helped Austin Davis turn into, and of course with how well Dickinson is playing.

There's a reason Bediako is still considering Michigan even with the crowded front court. With Dickinson likely gone after the 2021-22 season, this 2022 kid is a must get.

He seems like a potential Hunter Dickinson 2.0 candidate:

  • Traditional paint-bound center
  • Enormous size
  • Limited athleticism
  • Not much interest to the NBA as a G-League or 1-and-done guy
  • Ranked in that sweet spot of 40-60 where you like to build your team
  • Interested in Michigan

I wouldn't worry too much about his defense or how raw he is....the kid's highlights are from when he was 15-16 years old.  I think he'd be a guy we'd like to sign and then surround with athletes and shooters.  Thumbs up from me.

Fascinating ESPN article about Donovan: https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/28723706/donovan-clingan-contends-basketball-future-late-mother-memory

Bristol Central is far from an athletic powerhouse but he turned down offers from all the top prep schools to stay there, where his late mother had been a basketball legend several decades earlier. Growing up minutes from the ESPN headquarters can't hurt either.
