The Banner is Cursed

Submitted by PutDaTeamOnMyBack on April 14th, 2020 at 12:18 PM

This has been discussed before. Since the banner has gone up the following (totally comparable list of things) has happened:

- Isaiah Livers gets hurt (twice)

- Z gets suspended

- UM Bball slumps

- Football loses another bowl game

- There's a god dang global pandemic

- Sports get cancelled

- Michigan's heralded recruiting class implodes

It's time to take the abomination out back like Ole Yeller.

I am handling this well.

Before Bo died, our hoops program sucked, baseball was an afterthought and we were 1-4 against Tressel with an aging HC who wanted Mike DeBord to succeed him.  Our one bright major sport was hockey and it had been almost a decade since we won our last title.

You could argue that all of our programs look better positioned for success now than on the day Bo died.

You could argue that, but in the case of football you’d be completely wrong.

We went into the worst 7 year stretch in program history while falling clearly behind our two biggest rivals, until the program regained respectability, but still hasn’t won any titles and is nowhere near as close to OSU as it was in 2006

They were 1-4 against Tressel? WTF?
You do realize they’ve gone 1-13 vs OSU since?

It started somewhere.  Lloyd finished 1-6 against Tressel and owns almost half of our losses in that stretch.  We averaged over 3 losses a year under Carr in his last eight seasons.

From 2000-2020, OSU had five seasons with more than two losses.  And they beat us three of those years.  The two programs were trending in different directions before 2006.

I had to DVR that game and the timer ran out just as that hit was being laid out.  It froze on my screen, and that is an image that has been burned into my head.  I think you are right, everything against that school down south has crashed and burned since hten

Look at the silver lining, people.

Yes, it sucks that we lost out on both Christopher and Todd in a 12-hour span.  However, to me, that's a surefire sign that the basketball season and by proxy semi-normal life should resume later this year.

Because... considering our luck, if we HAD gotten both five-stars for our team does anyone here seriously think the fates would've let there be a basketball season for us to enjoy their talents?

Honest to god, Michigan is the ultimate “Always a bridesmaid never the bride“ sports program I can think of.    It’s fucking painful being a Michigan fan.   Always sooo close, but never closing the deal.      Throw in the ass rapes by Ohio State in football, and I don’t know how much more I can take.

Wrong...

Before the latest few generations of entitlement arrived, Michigan in the 90's and early 2000's had a lot of success. No NC's but it would have come had they stayed the course.

Where I think you're wrong is that we're NOT a Bridesmaid at this point... we're someone sitting in the audience HOPING with clenched sphincter that we catch the bouquet just once in our life!

Yup... that's us waiting for lightning in a bottle! Change the culture at the University "and they will come".

All singularly good players... would you rate them up their with Brady, Howard, Woodson, Woodley or others? Meh, not so much

In an uncomfortably similar way, wasn't there a saying of this older coaching icon...

"THE TEAM, THE TEAM, THE TEAM" *head scratch

(We haven't had an identity as a team in a decade or two now, just a bunch of players runnin' around the field)

Donovan edwards will go to georgia, rocco spindler will go to notre dame, damon payne will go to ohio state, garrett dellinger will go to lsu, we will fill out our class with with 3 stars from rhode island with grit, we will lose 5 games this fall in football. Rinse and repeat.

I think its all the PitBull references.  He tanked the football season and keeping him up there is now costing us in basketball. Is he really that funny of an inside joke anyways?

I don't really believe in curses, but I do believe that the banner is stupid and ugly. Why in the flying fuck is a University of Michigan sports blog defacing its head basketball coach with a skanky old man beard worn by an Illinois football coach?
