Bacon said something interesting on 105.1

Submitted by M Gulo Gulo on

He said his souces wouldnt go on record so it is not in Endzone, but a caller brought up that Bandon made personel recommendations when he came in to watch film on Sundays with the staff (so not cool) and said he was thinking of firing Hoke midway through last season and bringing in Greg Schiano. Did anyone else hear about this or have any more information?

As mentioned Bacon said he couldnt go into it but the way his voice sounded it wasnt difficult to tell there had to be some truth behind it.

... And so it was in 2015 that the mgoblog community decided that it would never utter Brandon's name again. It was done.

You think that's bad?! 2 years ago at a home basketball game, Michigan up by 15 or 20 pts,  DB walked right by my aisle seat and I gave him a nice "Hello Dave" and held out my hand for him to shake. He snubbed me. Walked right on by. Like I didn't even exist.

I can put up with a lot. To do a horrible job handling the shane morris incident? Sure. Almost fire hoke to bring in another mediocre coach? Ok. Completely ruin Michigan athletics? Fine.

But i'll be damned to have the AD at the school I attend be so cold hearted to walk right on by my extended hand.

Luckily I got one of those free pizzas from a cheerleader later that game so that turned things around.

No it's not "disrespectful" to refer to a famous public figure by their first name you fucking asshole! What respect did he deserve anyway? Who gives a fuck about his age? Take your authoritarian bullshit and stick it up your ass where it belongs! Did scum Brandon (I hope that was respectful enough for you) get interviewed a million times by people who didn't know him but called him Dave? I bet so, but I guess they are officially sanctioned enough for you, as spokesmodels for the corporatocracy, such that they are allowed this unwarranted familiarity.

Aside from getting his autograph several times outside the stadium tunnel gate when I was a kid, the only times I ever ran into Bo was at Crisler. I often sat close enough to his seat to see him but I never bothered him in his seat. However there were three or four times when we crossed paths in the aisle or on the floor on the way to or from our seats and when we were face to face I'd get a big smile and say Hi Bo, or How ya doin Bo? & he'd get a big smile and shake my hand and put his other hand on my shoulder with a squeeze as if we were old friends, but he didn't know me from Adam! Maybe he recognized me from previous encounters, my look is certainly not generic, but I doubt it. Either way he sure as hell wasn't offended & didn't take it as "disrespect."

If it was good enough for Bo it's infinitely better than Dave deserved. The OP should've addressed him as dirtbag. I hope that too would've been respectful enough for you.

Brandon is a gift that keeps on giving. I wouldn't put anything past Brandon. I am sure he thought it was the best thing, in his own way. I am glad we are in the new era.

I absolutely think this was the case.  And sitting in on film sessions was something known a while ago about Brandon.

But add to it the fact that Shane Morris was foricbly started in now the infamous concussion (yes it was!) game ...

Derrick Green was started over Smith and Johnson and at the time, some speculated that it was Brandon who wanted this "highly-touted 5-star" RB on the field and forced Hoke's hand ...

The myriad of burned redshirts to get kids on the field seems like it very easily could have been dictated by Brandon, wanting to showcase the "best talent" in order to draw fans ...

Recently players said that under Hoke you didn't know if you were starting or not, playing or not and most importantly ....why not.

All of it sounds to me like a very meddling and intrusive AD, trying to manage the program through a puppet head coach.  Something that would NEVER, EVER fly with a Jim Harbaugh or Les Miles (related to the 2011 search).  Like I said in another thread, I would love to have a beer with Hoke and get the real story ....and not just the Bacon book version.

What Hoke dealt with in working for Brandon.

Except we were all welcoming it at the time. If Borges had stayed, we would've been infuriated with Brandon/Hoke for not firing him and bringing in the highly touted OC from Alabama, a year removed from a national title.

Most if not all of us at the time thought that Nussmeier was the answer to our problems. Hindsight is 20/20 my friend.

I get the feeling that Hoke was so grateful for the opportunity to coach at Michigan that he abandoned his good judgment out of loyalty to the guy that hired him (and, maybe some fear about getting fired). I would bet that Hoke never would have allowed an AD to dictate personnel decisions when he was at Ball St or SDSU. I do think that Hoke is an average D1 head coach, and that an average coach would do better than 5-7 with the talent that Hoke recruited to the roster. From this, I have to come to the conclusion that there was something going on in the department (see Brandon) that was hamstringing him a bit. Now that we got Harbaugh though, I am exstatic that this was the case, assuming it was.

Not that I'm upset Bacon is bringing all this stuff to light, (which is mostly for non MGoBloggers) but I can't wait til I've seen the last Brandon/Bacon post.

to shove it.  Could you imagine Brandon trying to do that to Harbaugh?  Harbaugh would have pulled Brandon's spine out of his body and stapled it to the front door with a sign a warning any other idiots who wanted to "help" him...

Not sure how true this is, but if it is true, thank god Brandon was canned long before he had a chance to do any more long term damage.

Had he gotten the chance to bring in Schiano, we would never be any better than a 7-5 to 8-4 team with continue ass whippings from MSU/OSU. He would've been fired after 2-3 years and we'd start all over again. What's worse, we would've lost out on any chance at Harbaugh likely forever, and would've likely entered another 10-15 years of complete irrelevance. Possibly permanent irrelevance.

That first year with Hoke winning the Sugar Bowl win must've convinced Brandon he was a god among men who could get away with whatever he wanted. What the hell did Mary Sue possibly see in this guy that she had to go out of her way to endorse him?

Another couple interesting bits I caught Bacon saying today was that when Brandon made the call to Hoke to offer the job, Hoke couldn't say yes right away because his wife wasn't there, and also once he accepted that Hoke told Brandon he was "looking forward to working with Forcier" to which Brandon told him he was going to have to wait a month or so on that one.

Then iirc, Brandon announced at the same press conference announcing Hoke that Forcier left the program. Hoke had to see what was up right then I bet if he didn't already know.

A bit late to chip in here, but: I don't think waiting to talk with a spouse about a massive life change job is at all a bad idea. A guy who cares about his family is not somehow less of a man for doing that. Makes sense that Hoke would wait. Also, as much as we want to look down on DB for everything, is it proper for an athletic department staffer of any kind to furnish privileged academic information to a person who is not under contract? I could see that being a problem. It's possible DB was just being prudently cautious there.

For anyone that has read Bacon's book, does he discuss the wearing of the alternate jerseys at Michigan State in 2011? I can confirm that these and the Outback Bowl jerseys were his idea. In both cases many problems occurred before the game simply because he "forced" the team to wear them.
