Bacon adds 57-page afterword to Endzone

Submitted by Bloodoo on

Excerpt touches on why JUB believes Harbaugh will stick around.

"What I've noticed is that people in Ann Arbor are very community oriented," Sarah added. "People here care about the town. They're connected to it. It's a very good place to raise a family," which is a very good thing for Michigan fans to hear from a woman who happens to be raising a family. This jogged Jim's thinking. "I've noticed that it's less negative," he added. "People are less negative about where they live, and the people they meet. There's not as much gossip, not as much talking about people behind their backs. The people just feel like they’re more trustworthy here."

I do a little writing, and I can tell you that EVERY writer is their own best editor. Spelling mistakes are literally inexcusable, and while the copy editor should catch them, they frankly shouldn't have to do so. Plus with modern word processing software, it is almost impossible to have spelling errors anyway, so...

But when people ask me if I’d change anything, that brings us, alas, to the damned typos, missing words, grammatical glitches and the like. As you might imagine, the lion's share of the blame falls squarely on my shoulders. I jammed the production people by turning in a thick manuscript, three months later than we’d hoped. Further, on the final pass, when you’re supposed to be making the smallest, fewest changes, I was making substantial edits in red ink, with arrows pointing here and there, words and sentences cut and added, and often whole paragraphs inserted or slashed. This is playing with fire, because it forces the production people to do far more work, and do it far faster, than they normally would.
http://mgoblog.com/content/endzone-user-qa-john-u-bacon So while some of the blame is on the editors (as he also goes on to say), this is largely on Bacon. We're all human, but never in my life had I seen that many errors in a professionally published book. And while I did and do appreciate his in-depth content, I also have to admit that the sheer volume of typos bothered me a great deal (probably disproportionately, I'll admit).

honestly, maybe I'm just not very observatory or something, but I really didn't notice all of the typos as I read it. reading here all of the outrage over typos was a surprise to me. I still read it in like 2 days and it was one of the best research books I've ever read.

There are a lot of mistakes in there: 1) misspelled words (even "Michigan"); 2) sentences repeated by accident; and 3) words omitted from a sentence.  I remember one sentence being like "Michigan now has more students from than from Detroit."  I wanted to know what that other city was.  (New York?  Los Angeles?)

I still enjoyed the book, of course, but in all honestly it's about the sloppiest book I've ever read from a copyediting standpoint.

Yeah.  If you put your name to a book, you're taking responsibility for its content.

This doesn't lessen my opinion of him overall - I like him, and I recognize that he had to rush to get it printed before the 2015 season.

really understand Ann Arbor and Michigan and what makes him tick. This is his home and it gives him everything he needs. There are villains to vanquish, kids to mentor, championships to be won, unlimited resources, freedom of decision making, and far more supportive fans than any pro team.

that he will be here for another 10 years. I've decided to avoid that preoccupation of will he or won't he. Even if it were a three or four year stay we owe him a debt of gratitude as our program is certainly better today than it was two years ago and I am raising a glass to a better tomorrow. (or two weeks from now I guess.) That being said if he is tempted to leave I am going to throw my pennies in the huge ass money truck to keep him.

about ten years ago at Meijer. It's blue with maize lettering, but misspelled. Some idiot stitched a C in place of a G. To this day in his Michigan man cave he has his MICHICAN flag proudly displayed.

I know the afterward was written for the release of the paperback, will they release the afterward in a hardcover. I gave my copy of Brandon's Lasting Lessons to my MGoBrother and it hasn't been returned, so I have an excuse to get another.

relationships that seem solid can turn quickly in sports.  Maybe 5 or 6 years from now Jim feels like he wants another shot at a super bowl, maybe the wife and kids grow tired of Michigan Winters, or our State's economy tanks and our cities, even Ann Arbor, become less desireable places to live and raise a family.  A million things can happen.

But I do know this, I wish nothing more than for the future newest Harbaugh to know the joys of being raised in the shadow of the Michigan Footbal I knew growing up, that my friends would be a glorious, glorious thing.

He spoke about the addition on the radio this morning. He interviewed Butt, Blake O'Neill and Rudock about their experiences last year and I got the impression that it makes up the majority of the additional content.

how Harbaugh will feel about his job situation here in 3-4 years, not even Harbaugh.  And until we see how he reacts to offers from the NFL (which are certain to come, as soon as after next season), declaring confidence that he's going to stay for the long term simply isn't justified. And if he doesn't start winning against MSU and OSU, his seat will get warm very quickly, no matter how many times he beats down the Rutgers of the world.

You sound just like every rival fan that lives in a vacuum. The guys 16-3 with one road loss, his very first game. He can do whatever he wants here and with that freedom he has built a monster. He will win the national title this year and wake up the day after and get back to work. He's home, he loves it and he's not going anywhere.
