I’m not sure you are interpreting the press release correctly.    I think it refers to team activities other than competitions.   Perhaps spring football practice?

Honestly on April 6th, if we're at the point where we can reopen sports, I'll be overjoyed.

But looking at Europes cases skyrocketing and hospitals filling up, yeah...

I don't believe we'll be anywhere near that bad... but I do believe it's going to push people in leadership positions; gov, private sector, universities... to put the brakes on and develop a lot of language and procedures to deal with this in the future; takes time, effort, and resources to do that.

I'd rather see the NCAA get together along with many of the major universities, and discuss what's happening, and procedures for the future. With all of the prep work that universities did after 911, and considering some of the terrorist threats we've had... I'm surprised our educational system isn't more prepared.

No we aren’t.  The spread is pretty similar but the mortality rate is non even close to where they were at this point. We have had 43 deaths. 25 of those were people in the Washington nursing home. Exclude those and we are talking just under 20 deaths. Nationwide. Of those, all but 2 were elderly and/or had known periods pre-exiting conditions.

I’m not trying to downplay this but the panic over this is insane.  The disease seems to have a broad spread, but the severity for ordinarily healthy individuals doesn’t seem to be worthy of the level of fear. Again, the flu kills tens of thousands annually just in the US alone.

We are taking precautions to stem the spread and save the lives of countless people by keeping the health system from being overloaded. Tell me, what is the number of people that you are comfortable with dying? Maybe we can ease up until we hit that number, then start takin it seriously. Keep in mind, best estimates project that whatever stats say we have currently infected, it's likely 10x that number, and doubling every 4 days. We won't know the difference we've made til 2+ weeks after extreme measures were taken.

It takes on average 17.6 days for the virus to become lethal. And of course the mortality rate is lower right now. If a patient was exhibiting signs of late stage Corona Virus, they would have all the hospital resources available to them to help. It's about making sure that in two weeks when way more people are sick as hell, were able to have the resources to adequately treat them without hospitals essentially having to choose who will die because of a lack of personnel and ventilators. Using current deaths to prove a mortality rate is statistically irresponsible.

I don't think this refers to official conference sports competitions, but rather practices, meetings, etc.

"The Big Ten Conference announced today that all organized team activities have been suspended until April 6, 2020 and will be re-evaluated at that time.

The Big Ten has previously announced that in addition to canceling the Men’s Basketball Tournament it will be canceling all conference and non-conference competitions through the end of the academic year, including spring sports that compete beyond the academic year, and participation in all NCAA tournaments and competitions. The Conference also has announced a moratorium on all on- and off-campus recruiting activities for the foreseeable future.

The Big Ten Conference will use this time to work with the appropriate medical experts and institutional leadership to determine next steps for moving forward in regard to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The main priority of the Big Ten Conference continues to be the health, safety and wellness of our student-athletes, coaches, administrators, fans and media as we continue to monitor all developing and relevant information on the COVID-19 virus."

Few tips for next time:

1. Start by reading the title - if they meant they were changing previous statements about competitions, the title would probably have emphasized that.

2. See if you can find a direct quote to put in your post - if you can’t, step back and ask why.

Both of these steps might have helped you draw the correct conclusion from an admittedly poorly written statement.

The statement could certainly be written better .    I read it several times before I felt confident in jumping in to say that WD was wrong (granted, the first time I read it, I did not come to WDs conclusion - it was more of a, what ate they trying to say here?).    And as WD documented, he’s hardly the only person to misinterpret it).

I would not count on anything changing in the next few weeks. I've seen a lot of comments on this board lately that have me (as a doctor) shaking my head and wondering where people are getting their information.

First, if you don't want to look stupid, please don't tell us what you "think". Don't tell us what some blowhard talk show host "thinks". If you don't do this for a living then you don't know anything to those of us who do. Second, while no one should be panicking, you should be taking this incredibly seriously. Yes, most of us are not going to be severely affected from an illness standpoint. It's that same type of logic that gets people killed by not vaccinating. Please read this.  Here's a good quote:

A preliminary study released on Wednesday by the Institute for Disease Modeling projected that in the Seattle area, enhancing social distancing — limiting contact with groups of people — by 75 percent could reduce deaths caused by infections acquired in the next month from 400 to 30 in the region.

and another one:

The most lethal pandemic to hit the United States was the 1918 Spanish flu, which was responsible for about 675,000 American deaths, according to estimates cited by the C.D.C.

The Institute for Disease Modeling calculated that the new coronavirus is roughly equally transmissible as the 1918 flu, and just slightly less clinically severe, and it is higher in both transmissibility and severity compared with all other flu viruses in the past century.

and perhaps the most important in regards to the 1918 flu:

The speed and deadliness of the pandemic humbled doctors then much as the coronavirus pandemic is doing now. Some commented on the difficulty of getting healthy people to take personal precautions to help protect others at greater risk.

You are not taking precautions for yourself, it is to protect your fellow citizens. It's for your parents and grandparents. Your stupidity, selfishness, and carelessness may leave others dead. So go ahead and live your life but take a break from your routine. Avoid large groups and gatherings. Practice good hygiene and avoid contact with vulnerable groups if possible. And please tell your representatives in government that in spite of what some asinine politicians may say, we need free universal testing made available and we needed it weeks ago. Trying to protect the hotel, restaurant, and travel industries (as well as the stock market) in spite of the recommendations of people who know what they are talking about is irresponsible and borders on being criminal.

I won't know what to believe until Donald Trump announces it.  Here is what I hope for:

"It will be like a miracle, all the basketball games will be made up, the tournaments will be on, and brackets and seeds will be placed under the authority of Mike Pence, who will in turn suck up to me and give me all due credit whenever a press conference is held"
