The point system for that makes no sense.
You only get 1 Point (per $1000) for Lifetime University donations.

You do get 20 points for being a UM Alum. It's also 1 point per $100 donated to the athletic department, which is what the OP is (rightfully) griping about. It heavily incentivizes shifting giving away from academics and towards athletics.

Consider, just being a season ticket holder:
- 1 point for each consecutive season of season tickets since 1992
- Football PSDs since...2006? Basketball PSDs since...2010?
Neglect being a graduate (20 points) or letterwinner and any other donations to the University.
If one had only two (decent) football, basketball, and hockey seats since 1992, an estimate of points gained since that time would be roughly:
- 3 sports * 2 seats * 25 years = 150 points for season ticket loyalty
- 2 seats * $400 PSD (average) * 10 years = 80 points for football PSDs paid
- 2 seats * $200 PSD (average) * 6 years = 24 points for basketball PSDs paid
- Total: 254 points since 1992
If you move those football seats into the new box seats, the annual PSD increases to $1,550 per seat (or more). Similar for basketball (and hockey).
Most of the blue-hairs have been around (at least) that long and can afford that kind of annual outlay.
EDIT: Whoops. Was off by a factor of 100. Sorry.

for my wife and I. The bizarre thing is we have 40 points for letterwinner and neither of us played on any sports teams at Michigan. WTH is that about I wonder - a mistake? But with or without the 40 points we aren't close to the 400 needed to order tickets.

Your points Law School points go toward "Poetry in the Law Quad" - you lucky bastard.
November 1st, 2016 at 10:14 AM ^
maybe your donation to the law school will come in handy when you need to purchase a "get out of jail free" ticket, assuming you've amassed enough points

For those that don't have enough donor points, here is a link from the B1G website on other ways to get tickets: http://www.bigten.org/tickets/big10-tickets.html

They're referring to MGoPoints, correct? I should be all set then. I'll take 4.

The secondary market is the way to go price-wise for this game. Remember, every school gets an allottment plus the host city plus all the dignitaries so there becomes a LOT of tickets available as soon as the participants for the game are finalized.
The downside is you wont necesssarily be sitting with an entire section of Michigan fans. The upside is your seat will prolly be better and they'll be cheaper.

Wait... even Rutgers?
November 1st, 2016 at 2:39 PM ^
Seth should consider adding the B1G champ game to his price-tracking column.
Assuming that's not taboo.

Wisky and Nebraska travel well too. They seem to have the inside track in the West at the moment.
November 1st, 2016 at 10:32 AM ^
Wisconsin and especially Nebraska travel well, and they're both (so far) having good years. A Michigan vs. Nebraska or Michigan can. Wisconsin game sells out on both sides.

I bought a pair from Ticketmaster already. My buddy paid out the nose for a pair of MSU tickets last year so I thought I'd beat the rush and sell (and hopefully break even) if we dont make it to Indy

Getting a little ahead of ourselves aren't we?

Actually, no. If you want these tickets and downtown hotel you have to plan months in advance. Otherwise you'll pay out of your ass. As it stands now all downtown hotels are booked, ticketmaster is sold out and stubhub is outrageous. Common fan can't even attend these games anymore!
November 1st, 2016 at 9:17 AM ^
Those are the only two options and they will be based on priority points.

look at staying at the Hampton Inn in Anderson, IN (I-69). We stay there every year for the Indy 500. Nice hotel, cheap and roughly a 45 minute drive to Lucas Oil. Indy is a great venue for this championship, as downtown bars go all in on the parties and fun. Stdium is easy walking distance from any downtown location.

Re: hotels, are you speaking from experience/knowledge or pessimism? I have been trying to plan this w/ my daughter but I (probably naively) figured that the City of Indianapolis could support the game without selling out.

Most of them are "open". You just have to booke for December 2nd AND 3rd. Just booked. Have until the night of the OSU game to cancel. Perfect timing.
November 1st, 2016 at 9:39 AM ^
I seem to remember it was 25k per school, but could be wrong.
There are only about 2.5k active donors with at least 400 priority points, meaning the school is only offering at most 7k tickets with this offer (1k donors have 750+ points = 4k tickets and 1.5k donors have between 400-749 points = 3k tickets).
I know they will reserve some tickets for the students and band, but the numbers don't add up, unless the ticket allottment per school has drastically changed since the first game in 2011.
Edit: I found an article stating that Iowa only had 10k last year, so maybe it is only 10k, which would make the above numbers more understandable.
