Atta Boy: Former Michigan coaches right now

Submitted by PeterKlima on October 1st, 2021 at 2:15 PM

The post on Nua made me appreciate some of the fine coaches we have enjoyed here.

Since Michigan is still undefeated, let's be magnanimous and appreciate former coaches:

1.  Brady Hoke is 4-0 back at San Diego State.  They've already beaten a Pac-12 team. He has his spot.

2.  DJ Durkin and Chris Partridge are Co-DCs at No. 11 Ole Miss. The defense struggled last year, but appears to have improved under their leadership.

3. Scott Loeffler's Bowling Green team just beat Minnesota and sit at 2-2.  He may have hastened Fleck's exit.

4. Rich Rod is OC at 2-1 Louisiana-Monroe. He did well at Arizona, but was run off for dubious reasons.  God speed to his son.

5. Calvin McGee is RB coach at Duke.  They have the best rushing attack in the ACC and are high nationally.

6. Nick Sheridan (OC/QB coach at Indiana) got his Penix under control last week.  Not as many misfires.

7. Greg Mattison retied from Ohio State as co-DC last year. As you know, chaos - relative to OSU - has ensued. Enjoy the beach, Greg!!

I am sure there are more (and some not doing well), but let's celebrate their success while we are feeling good about our team!!!

I don't give any fucks what most of these guys are doing. It's especially absurd that you seem to think we should take some kind of pride in what Rich Rod, McGee, Mattison, and Durkin are doing now.

FYI, it's Calvin Magee. I guess you didn't appreciate him enough to correctly spell his last name, though I'm also guessing he gets that a lot.

I'm not much of a Rodriguez fan.  By 2010 it was obvious it wasn't working, and the 2011 Gator Bowl against Mississippi State sealed it for me.

Regarding his current role as OC at Louisiana-Monroe, according to cfbstats.com, ULM is:

Scoring offense -- 119
Rushing offense -- 122
Passing offense -- 122
Total offense -- 130
1st downs -- 126
3rd conversions -- 128

That's out of 130 teams.

Perhaps he'll get better ...

I hope Greg steps on a jellyfish at the beach. I hope it doesn't hurt him too badly and that he'll still enjoy his beach vacation... but that sting will irritate him on occasion and he'll feel like an idiot for his life choices.

He got his shot at his dream job, made a lot of money at Michigan, it didn't work out, got many other chances for assistant coach jobs afterwards, worked his way back to a head coach job, now makes $1M per year on a 5 year contract at SDSU and lives in an area in the US with one of the the best climates. I think he's doing OK, probably because he is a good guy and a decent coach.

I had the sense that Nick Sheridan had the chops to be a great coach.  I loved how he handled himself in interviews when he was the QB.

I wouldn't mind seeing him back here.

Fleck isnt going anywhere. Much like Harbaugh and maybe Frost these might be the best youll get anytime soon. You can change and go with someone new but dont be so quick to let your Pelini go just yet.

I wish Hoke well because I think he’s a good man and a good coach, just wasn’t right to be Michigan’s head man. The rest of the group I don’t really care about. Especially Durkin and Rich Rod.  I don’t think ULM being 2-1 with RR being the OC is much to brag about. My how he has fallen.

I did not realize that both the OL and DL coaches for the Green Bay Packers had ties to Michigan (Adam Stenavich - OL, Jerry Montgomery - DL).
