He's the starter for ND? All this time I thought Patterson had transferred to Michigan.

I was at the lunch today when Coach made the announcement.  He said that he told the team this morning.  He said that Shea had the "it factor" that he was looking for.  He said that BP was #2, DM was #3 and JM #4.

I think it's a good sign that Harbaugh is willing to publicize this two weeks before the season.

He loves a heated QB competition. Announcing the winner of that competition this early tells me the gap between Patterson and everyone else is so wide, no one else has a chance to close it over the second half of fall camp. Since Peters has starting experience, a high ceiling, three years in the system, and is poised to make a sophomore leap, he represents the floor for the level of play we can expect out of the starter this year. Even if Peters demonstrates only marginal improvement over last year, Patterson would still have to be playing at a high level to be far enough ahead of him that Harbaugh is willing to declare the winner at this point.

This also means Patterson at least has a workable grasp on the offense already, which is a concern with an incoming transfer, especially one from a program with a different style of offense.

My speculation may be off the mark, but I find this news encouraging.

Did anyone see that other tweet by Spath about #3? If this was already discussed I apologize

"I love guys like Chase and Devin Bush and Khaleke, but Rashan has elevated his game this year in a way I haven't seen since 1997 when Woodson came into the season saying 'You cannot beat me.' Gary will be the best player on the field every week." - again, from same buddy

"Charles Woodson, Mark Messner and Brandon Graham ... in that order, are the three most dominating players I've ever seen at Michigan. I think Rashan Gary is going to join that group this year." -- from my buddy inside the program.

Confirmed by Ablauf.

Although this seemed pretty obvious, it's good that the team will have 2 weeks of practice knowing who the starter is, getting reps with the 1s, etc.

#Michigan SID @dablauf just confirmed that @CoachJim4UM announced to the team last night that Shea Patterson is the Wolverines starting quarterback. pic.twitter.com/8YPfLZF3yC

Makes sense, it is time to get the 1's prepared with the ND game-plan.  Sure seems like the starting offense is way ahead of last year in terms of personnel decision-making from camp.

Who is your starting 11 on offense in the first ND series?  Here is my guess:

  • QB - Patterson
  • RB - Higdon
  • TE1/HB - McKeon
  • TE2 - Gentry
  • LT - Runyan
  • LG - Bredesen
  • C - Ruiz
  • RG - Onwenu
  • RT - JBB
  • WR1 - Black
  • WR2 - DPJ

Going to start at Power-I, play-action mixing in some roll-out type RPOs.  Who says Manball can't have a few wrinkles and get playmakers the ball in space?   Not Harbaugh.  Go Blue !!!

It's best Harbaugh announced him the starter. It will stop the media from running with the whole "who is the starter" crap. Plus, ND, like all of us, knew he was going to start. Let's go Shea!

So this means Harbaugh has no objection to naming a starting QB in advance, and that last year's late naming of starter means Speight and OKorn were neck and neck?

Based on Speight's flashes of competency in 2016, I thought it was just Harbaugh gamesmanship.  Now, it's just confirmation about Speight.  (Would have thought he should've won job outright based on what we saw from O'korn).

Sad.
