Another One: Name Your Top 3 Plays From The Past 3 Years

Submitted by MaizeBlueA2 on December 11th, 2023 at 9:45 PM

Another random bowl season layoff question for the board.

Before I asked for your top 3 non-OSU related (and non-'23/'24 CFP) games from the past 3 years. That conjured up some fun memories.  However, for the most part that one was pretty obvious.

Since ESPN sucks, I won't ask for the SportsCenter Top 10, #SCTop10 moments...but just your MGo3 from the last 3 years.

And once again, OSU games are ineligible (this way we get more than "O-JA-BO!" and the Haskins Hurdle, "got a WIIIDE open receiver" and "DONOVAN EDWAAARDS, WHOA! CAN THEY CATCH HIM? NO!" and "FIIIIIIRES............INTERCEPTED!!!")

So excluding the OSU games, what have been your top 3 plays from the past 3 years?  Interpret it how you wish (spectacular vs. impact/moment vs. creativity).

I’m going all 2021, since I’m confident 2022 and 2023 don’t happen if Michigan doesn’t have the season that they did.

  1. All TD
  2. Hawkins strip fumble
  3. Edwards double pass TD to Wilson

1. Corum 22 yard TD to close out OSU after Zinter's injury.

2. Henning reverse against OSU in 2021 (Haskin's 5 TDs get an honorable mention)

3. Tie: Donovan's long TD runs vs OSU in 2022.

Great thread. The three plays that stand out in my mind:

3) That 3rd and 25 play in the 2021 season opener against WMU where JJ scrambled towards the sideline and then found Daylen Baldwin on the opposite site of the field, who scampered 40 yards for a TD. That gave us our first glimpse of what JJ was capable of.

2) This wasn't a spectacular play, but that clutch 4th and 3 completion from JJ to Isaiah Gash with 57 seconds left in the Illinois game that extended the drive and saved the season.

1) That trick play in the 2021 B1G Championship Game against Iowa where Donovan Edwards threw an absolute dime to Roman Wilson in stride, who ran 35 yards for the TD. That was a flawless playcall by Gattis and flawless execution by The Don as a freshman, as if he was a veteran QB. BONUS: this is also the play that gave us Sad Iowa Fan™.

Going off script and picking outside the lines action.

1) Michigan players making Jump Around their thing at Camp Randall.

2) JJ giving crowns to his teammates.

3) The backups doing their thing with the folding chairs.

HM - Harbaugh showing he still has a few moves left while running for his life from the Gatorade bath at Lucas Oil.

* Moody’s winning field goal over Illinois in 2022 (very relieved)

* Edwards TD pass in the 2021 Big Ten Championship game (perfect call and execution)

* Corum’s 30 yard TD against Penn State this season (such a huge win!)

Mike on Stover; Hutch TD that would have beaten MSU 2021 and Wilson catch overturned to win the playoff with TCU last year.

If just play get over it was a thing then how are we playing a one loss Alabama when they used a Hail Mary to win at Auburn. One play...get over it...right? Not all plays are created equal. Blake TD after Big Z goes down was just a play....okay!

Yeah no OSU but that play (Mike) and that guy have just been a joy to watch (Hutchsonian, I dare say) . The emotion swing and pick me up from Blakes' TD was epic and the perfect flashing of 65 was scripted.

Momentous.

Good topic in a slow time.

There are two non-OSU plays that jump out that many others have mentioned: the All TD against PSU and the Edwards pass to Wilson (with JJ blocking!) against Iowa.

Then there is kind of a jumble of big plays, long tds by Corum, key plays against Nebraska in 21 and PSU in 23, big defensive plays from various dominant athletes.

I’ll just pick one out of a hat and say Will Johnson’s pick six against Minnesota this year, since I was there.

In the un-asked-for but extremely difficult OSU category, I’m going with Cornelius Johnson TD 1, Edwards TD 1, and Blake’s gigantic go-ahead TD this year, but it’s hard to leave out a dozen other incredible moments on field and also a Twitter video of the team roaring at the shaken OSU players in the tunnel in 21.

- Erick All on a bad ankle out running the PSU DB's to give us a giant road win.

- Breaking the rules - Mikey S breaking up the TD catch of the OSU tight end.  That was the play of the year like no other.

- Big Kenny Grant with his 340 pound self chasing down a running back versus PSU.  Wow!  Hustle, heart and he really is a gift from the football gods.  He could work himself into a NFL first rounder.

Michael Barrett kickoff return pass to AJ Henning

I remember watching Corum break off that TD run against Washington, and I was in awe of how fast he was.

I remember thinking to myself that usually only OSU has skill position players who are that fast. Felt like I was watching maybe the first Michigan player since Denard where I wasn't fairly certain someone was going to chase him down from behind.

In no particular order:

1) Sainristil pass break-up on Stover. Hands down, play of the year and quite possibly saved Michigan's season. If Stover connects with Stroud on that, OSU can pull to within three and all of Michigan's momentum is sucked out.

2) Rod Moore's pick to end the game a few weeks ago. When Michigan settled for that field goal, I figured it was a coin flip, at best, that Michigan would hang on to win. When McCord made those two completions to get to the Michigan 40, all I could think about was how MHJ was going to rip Michigan's spine out with the go ahead score with about 10-15 seconds left, but thankfully Jaylen Harrell got to McCord just in time, and Moore was exactly where he needed to be to make that play. Moore made the play to win the biggest edition of The Game, ever.

3) This one probably isn't on anyone else's list, but its just a personal favorite of mine: Haskin's second TD against OSU in 2021, to make it 20-13. It was right after Corum's big run, and then Haskins runs it from about 10-15 yards out, with All out as the lead blocker, getting his hand on Haskin's back and helping pull him into the end zone. I just remember Joel Klatt getting so amp'd up over how that play developed, how the blocking developed, and his emotion was so infectious. I go back and watch it from time to time and Klatt just says something to the tune of "You see him putting his hand on his back?!? That's what I'm talkin' about!! THAT is how you run the rock!!"

It was also on that drive where I started to allow myself to believe that Michigan could maybe, just maybe, beat these guys.

---

I'm just realizing now you put at the bottom of the post that these are to be non-OSU related. Oh well.

Honorable mention is Roman Wilson's David Tyree impersonation this year in the Nebraska game. You can watch football a long time and not see a catch like that come along. Some of it was luck, I'm sure, but still, holy cow what a catch.

In no particular order:

1. JJ's supersonic ball past Cal Haladay's ear was maybe the best college throws I've ever seen.  I genuinely think Haladay must have heard a small sonic boom from that ball blazing past his earhole.

2. Donovan to Roman in the 2021 BTCG was about the coolest thing I've personally seen in a football game.

3. Corum teleporting through like 5 guys in his near-TD run in the IU game in 2022.

Since mine were all offense: here my top 3 non-OSU defensive plays.

1. Dax Hill out of a cannon sack on that Wisconsin QB.

2. Kennth Grant pick (fat guy INT!) on Nebraska's first possession this year - maybe not the most impactful to the game outcome, but one of the funniest.

3. Mikey pick-6 against Rutgers including dodging tackle attemps by his own D line.

Erick All to the house at Penn State to seal the game.

Corum to the house at Penn State to seal the game/Manny Diaz can't get his linemen to maintain gap integrity despite Michigan running the ball 30-some straight times/"Here, have our signs. Now, gtfotw."

Brad Hawkins strip and fumble recovery to win the game at Nebraska in '21?

Non-OSU game plays? I don't even know if I remember very many. This year was mostly a joke. Every game was pretty much dominance. I was at the Maryland game, and I can tell you that didn't feel great..so, not sure those were memorable. Even the good plays weren't "memorable".. because the games are so rarely close.

So, I guess B10 title game stuff?

The HB Pass by Donovan

THe..

No, I can't do it.

3 plays:

1. The final throw by Stroud in 2021 short of the sticks where it finally sunk in.

2. The pick by Moore - I was really worried.

3. Corum's TD run after the Zinter injury. Things felt completely unsure until he rescued us yet again.

Has anyone said the Sainristil catches versus Nebraska or Maryland from 2021? Shocked I haven't seen more of either...that's actually what sparked this entire thread.

I'm also shocked that no one mentioned JJ's roll out and TD pass to Baldwin against WMU.

The day we all said, WHOA...that's the future.

Edit, there was one mention.
