All-Michigan Roster For TBT Includes Trey Burke, Jamal Crawford

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on April 18th, 2023 at 11:15 PM

I had never heard of this, but ESPN hosts something every summer called "The Basketball Tournament," a tourney with a $1 million pot. It takes place July 25-30 in Dayton.

There is apparently going to be an all-Michigan-alumni team that'll feature Trey Burke playing with Jamal Crawford, along with a whole bunch of other legends. There's even a football player on our team (Devin Funchess). Seeing guys from different eras playing together will be awesome. I'm so in I can't stand it.

See the story and the roster HERE.

So Burke's not playing in the NBA anymore? That's disappointing - he had a good journeyman-type career there for a while. Too bad. Bummer that a bunch of those other dudes aren't in the league anymore either and I'm guessing Charles Matthew never caught on anywhere after his injury.

Disappointing is not a word that comes to mind when I think of Burke's 9-year NBA career:

I didn't expect him to last that long given his athletic ability (not bad, but not upper-end) and (especially) size. I figured he'd get four or five years and then head overseas. As it is, he's probably (https://hoopshype.com/player/trey-burke/salary/) in pretty good shape financially.

Matthews definitely caught a bad break with his injury timing. I don't think his outside shot was quite good enough for the NBA.

Matthews was an interesting player.  He was a destitute man's Kobe Bryant.  Bear with me.

He was like Kobe Karaoke.  He had the fadeaway, the pull up jack, the dunk on your face, the lateral defense, the athletic rebounding.  But it was just a complete knock off version.  "Best-Brand Steaksauce."  Charrios.  Stittles.  The mini-car that you get at the Dollar Store that looks like a Hotwheels but weights less than a gram.

Speaking of NBA earnings, it’s almost universally accepted that Hunter Dickinson’s pro prospects are limited. As the NBA playoffs have started, my attention has returned to the NBA. I saw Alex Len laboring for the Kings, so I looked him up. 10 year career, averages 7 points and 6 rebounds per game, and has made $35.8M. And he’s 7’ 1” and 250 pounds. There is a place for HD in the NBA, provided he can shoot 3s and improve his defense a little.

Mason Plumlee has made $73M in 10 years. If I was HD, I wouldn’t give up the dream just yet.

Hunter unfortunately doesn’t even have the the agility or lateral quickness of Len or Plumlee. He gets blown by guards & wings consistently in CBB where screens are hardly switched but rather hedged or dropped. In the NBA where almost all screens result in switches, Hunter would get hunted on every possession until he’s taken off the floor. It’s what got Duncan taken out of the rotation in Miami.

FWIW, this is isn't a definitive list of who's going to be in the team. There was an earlier, quickly deleted, version of the tweet that left out "wish list" and the making calls emoji. I think that's where some of incorrect certainty comes from.

Seems likely there will be a M team, but it's still very much unknown who will be on it.

This tourney is where I saw the Elam Ending concept for the first time. Also, games are played at multiple sites. Dayton, Wichita, Louisville, West Virginia, and Syracuse have been announced so far IIRC. Might be a good chance to get to a game.

I know in the past OSU alum have had a team. I remember seeing Craft, Buford, Diebler, Lighty, and Sullinger among others on that team.

TBT was basically the first athletic event in the pandemic in 2020. Its a fun tourney (other than that the first champion was made of players from tUOS, er, tOSU).  Yes, it introduced the Elam ending, which is way more watchable than a free-throw-fest.

There will be a similar tournament for soccer this summer.  WOTS is Deadpool will be bringing some of his Wrexham players and will apparently be playing too. Drinking Aviator gin. And talking on his mobile service… oops he sold that one, nevermind.

That's a fun roster - lots of point guards though.  I've watched the TBT the past few years and if this roster materializes we would definitely be in the top tier of teams.  Jamal Crawford would bring it home for us.

Really excited, have been hoping for a UM alum roster since the TBT first started. Great roster too, so many of my favorites. Go win the trophy!
