This Ain't Your Championship 2014 Buckeye Team

Submitted by Rdog on

I just did a quick look at points scored by the Buckeye's this year versus 2015 and 2014.   I looked at only conference games and eliminated Rutgers because Rutgers is bad.  I did not include overtime scores.

OSU 2014   Average points  per game  -  42

OSU 2015   Average points per game  -  33.3

OSU 2016   Average points  per game  -  26.5

Just rewatched this year's NW at OSU game and had some key takeaways:

OSU looks very beatable.   When they really need a first down they usually rush Barrett on a quarterback draw.   Stop this play and you will stop them on a lot of 3rd  downs.

The majority of OSU's  successful pass plays were screens -  NW gave OSU a ton of room on screens, I expect Michigan to not be so charitable.

I think one punt was blocked-   OSU's punting formation looks likely to give up a blocked punt under pressure.

Weber is not nearly as good as Zeke

Samuel  is fast and shifty but goes down real easily on contact

Sample size of one. How about 2013, when a mediocre Michigan almost had Devin Gardner single handedly will them to victory over the #3 Buckeyes. Or 2012, when the game in Columbus was a 5 point margin, and if Drake Harris (and all of us) hadn't been so unlucky to tear his ACL, Michigan may have beaten the #3 Buckeyes? Last year sucked. But it won't define this year.

We always get MSU and OSU best game. When was the last time one of them didn't show up against us? I cannot recall one. Always remember that they will do things they haven't done all year.they'll catch passes they haven't caught before, make blocks they haven't made before, and call many plays they haven't called before.

Pressue is on us.  This is the year for michigan to make noise.  Next year we lose a ton and OSU is still young.

Not to mention we haven't won in Columbus since like 2000.

much stronger BIG as part of the reasons for the offensive struggles in 2016 for osu. The BIG top to bottom looks like the best conference this year. UM, OSU, braska, wisconsin, a much improved psu and NW with a healthy thorson will be competitive with anyone in the country imo. Gonna be an epic "Game" in cbus unless osu falls behind early. I can't see anyone realistically challenging um other than osu.

When Meyer was at BG, Utah, and even for a while at Florida, spread offenses were widely derided as gimmicks. Lots of coaches refused to take them seriously; there were few schematic adjustments designed to stop spreads, and teams certainly did not recruit 'hybrid space players" or make structural plans for stopping speeads. Natually, the spread was much more effective in that environment. Much of that has since changed, so I think spread offensive systems present less of a schematic challenge than they once did. But an offense like Meyer's is still a sound and effective scheme--and when combined with the ludicrous talent he gets, it's tough to defend no matter how well-understood it might be.
