After a crappy loss, some hope for next year's B-ball team

Submitted by Ahriman on

Losses like this suck bad, but I came across this article that might provide some hope for next year's team. Obviously, this year isn't done yet, but Zach Shaw at 247 wrote an article about how well Austin Davis (redshirt) and Charles Matthews (transfer) are playing in practice.

Coach B said: "I hate practice some days. I hate it when Austin and Charles are getting baskets on us or defending us really well," Beilein said. "But I love it when I just think about the future with those two guys. It's really going to be helpful."

If Wagner and D.J. come back, next year's team should have a lot of talent (freshman Poole, Livers & Brooks too) and should do well. Just thought this might help some on the board cope with the NW loss.

This hardly ranks up there in buzzer beater losses we've had that hurt.

Would've been nice to have this game but we're in. We've had far worse losses like this where important things were on the line.

We've had only 5 wins off buzzer beaters in the 21st century. It sure feels like it.

B1G Tournament games don't count towards your league record. It would still be 9-9, but it's not going to be 9-9.

It's gonna be 10-8. I know you want us to not make the tournament, but it's probably happening.

You want Beilein fired.

Even if we somehow don't make the NCAA Tournament this year, he's not going anywhere.

Maybe if the dumpster fire state we were in to start B1G play still applied there'd be some momentum, but we've done some impressive things this year that we couldn't even do with NBA players.

Oh.. You're one of those. GTFO!

You won't support your argument with facts.

EDIT: I've seen a lot of shit thrown at JB and a lot of people hop back on the bandwagon just to hop back off. I don't care for you and think all your arguments are invalid. EAD after losses like this if you're going to come out of your holes.

I've never seen a more bipolar team then this years basketball squad. It showed tonight between the first half and second. I understand teams get in slumps, but this is just Jekyll/Hyde type stuff.

Obviously, it's always the best to support the coach, but I don't blame people for posting Fire Beilein threads one day and then Appreciation threads the next. The play on the court is warranting it.

Uh, I often don't check those posts, but I don't think they're all by the same user.

I don't know why everyone thinks this team is so schizophrenic. We're an OK team in an OK league where almost no teams are really good are really bad. Makes for some inconsistency. Also, we lost on a last second play on the road to a team that's 10-7 in conference now after beating a team that's only a few games better at home. People act like we're beating Kentucky one day and losing to Rutgers the next.

The positive impact of JB are those beautiful sets Ace gif'd in basketbullets. On the downside, Michigan is not recruiting like a top 10 program.

Can we do better with a different coach? Depends on the coach.

The norm for the team is not being a final four contender every year. We aren't on the tier of UNC/Duke/Kansas/Kentucky and really haven't been over any extended amount of time. If we can get a coach that changes that, great. If not, JB is about as good as we get.

Show me where i did that with this team.

Criticizing a coaching staff when things are a disaster to your feeble mind is "trashing". Even though I religiously defended Beilein the last two years until it was impossible to after the Illinois loss in January.

Just take a hike. You can't get past your obsessive hatred of me to actually have a valid critique. You said this same empty nonsense to me when I called for us to fire our horrendous M Soccer coach (who went on to have a double digit loss season and miss the tournament for the 4th straight year) and you got neg bombed in the thread.

We are most certainly not a lock. Two losses to finish this season and we will be begging for a Play In game. We have had worse heartbreakers, but this was not without consequence, particularly when Illinois is creeping up on us and blew us out head to head. Also, it is virtually certain that we play OSU in the BIG tourney and they are an awful matchup for us. This made Nebraska a must win on the road after a dong punch against a team with absolutely nothing to lose. Not great, Bob.

When you run a clean program, you only get a shot at glory once every 4-5 years.  This is not the right team or the right year.  I am hoping for next year to be great for a number of reasons.  We'll see how it goes.

hiatus on 'Glory'. Whether it's Zak's slump, or players leaving early, or striking out on some guys, I'd like to think that sometimes it doesn't work out for the best and the past few years have been a time like that for Coach B. Next year does hold a lot of promise, especially if Moe doesn't leave. Hopefully he doesn't; I see him staying as a win/win in a big way.

Big Ten ranks third among Power Five conferences per KenPom. So, more accurately stated, the Big Ten is exactly average among the Power Five. But, ok.

It's also worth noting that seven (!!!) of Michigan's eight conference losses have come by 10 points or less, with two of those coming in overtime. Six of those eight losses have also come away from home.

I would never sit here and try to argue this year's Michigan team is great, but presenting this year's team as some horrid disaster is laughably inaccurate. This is a solid team that is just weak and inconsistent enough to let a lot of these A/B level games slip away.

Yep. I know it's a cliche to say a team is better than it's record but this team has a bunch of close losses and big wins. They are third in point differential in the big ten behind Wisconsin and Purdue. Change a couple of those one possession games to wins and youre talking about a sweet 16 seed.

Given the hypothetical presented, I would love to know how a road loss to this year's Nebraska counts as a road loss to a decent team.

The team still has work to do and while I hope they can make it happen, there's reason to doubt given the uneven road performance and the fact they just suffered a huge stomach punch.

exactly. we're in. we maybe lost a seed or two tonight. it was nice to see the team fight back from an 11 point deficit and play a pretty solid game in a hostile environment. also, if we had to lose on a buzzer beater, I'm glad it was against NW allowing them their first tourney bid ever. that made it much more palatable for me. I shrugged my shoulders and turned the tv off with no bad feelings at all. we will win the next one and maybe one in the BTT. I had us as 1 and done in the tourney anyway.

Ace said he doesn't think Wagner's best path to the NBA is to play pro in Germany. Why would that be? Lack of exposure? Or is the game just played so differently there (doesn't seem so from what I know)? Like others said, he'll get paid, play against competition that's as good or better than he gets now, and have no limits on practice. Doesn't sound like a terrible idea to me.
