Additional comments from Doyel about Clark to her new coach in same press conference - it gets creepier

Submitted by Indy Pete - Go Blue on April 18th, 2024 at 10:51 PM

Doyel, who was already under fire for a creepy interaction with Clark while asking the No. 1 pick of the Indiana Fever a question, referred to her as "that" and "it" in a new video that surfaced while he was talking to Fever coach Christie Sides.

The link includes a brief video and you can hear the tone of his voice and the emphasis.

I know a second post to bring attention to this guy may bother some, but I think it’s worth holding him accountable. The more this nonsense gets exposed, the more likely it is that appropriate consequences can be taken.

He came out with an "apology" article (that I refuse to link here because why give him clicks) and it was full of the biggest horseshit I've ever read.  His whole excuse was that he wasn't being creepy because he says the same thing to male athletes.  The only lesson he says he learned was that he can't speak to female athletes the same way he speaks to male athletes.

Bullshit for a number of reasons.  1. He absolutely doesn't speak to men like this. 2. It would still be creepy and unprofessional if he did speak to men like this, it just wouldn't get as much blowback/coverage because Clark is THE superstar right now. 3. It just reeks of whiny boomer BS complaining about "cAnCeL CuLtUrE."  He thinks that ultimately he didn't say anything wrong, it's just the culture that turned his words and quirkiness into something he didn't mean.

He also wrote:

Jim Harbaugh's not the only one who can thump a Bible. He compares himself to Moses? Fine. I'm quoting Ecclesiastes.

A national title for Harbaugh's cheating Michigan program would render college football meaningless.

As well as:

The NCAA and Big Ten are on record: Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh cheated, and it gave UM an unfair advantage on the field. Given that, what do we do with UM quarterback JJ McCarthy’s Heisman candidacy? I’m saying his candidacy should be over. And I’m a Heisman voter.

And:

College football has been disfigured beyond recognition by NIL and the transfer portal, but a title for Jim Harbaugh's cheating Michigan program would be the kill shot.

It'd be a shame if Doyel's career was crushed by snowballing public outrage. I'm sure the most painful part for him is that he can't jump in and throw gas on the fire in this situation because, well, he's the one in the fire this time.

Yeaup; ain't no fucking way he's giving heart hands to any male athlete, or telling them "Start doing it to me and we'll get along just fine"

Anger: This is how I talk to everyone! Had that been the male equivalent arriving to energize team and town – since I’ve been here, the closest thing Indianapolis has had is Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson – I’d have shown him the heart gesture and reiterated, “I like that you’re here.”

Nowhere in that ‘apology’ did he even acknowledge that comment. I might believe he’d make the gesture and say he’s glad he’s here to Richardson if Richardson famously made that gesture after games. But no way he says the final line to Richardson. I think he realizes that, which is why he doesn’t mention the line at all. Renders the entire apology insincere and besides the point.

He made that entire "apology" about him and his "quirks" or whatever and how he's just an aw shucks silly guy. Hardly sincere, IMO.

Also, he's had lots of very bad opinions over the years and has written a lot of really stupid stuff. Him getting called out should've happened a long time ago.

It frustrates me when we say that a mediocrity like Doyel is wildly talented and should know better! Exclamation mark! No, he's a bum, an old-fashioned fake crusader-style hack journo who just slobbered on a woman who is helping to make women and her sport taken seriously. Publicly. Made her presser about him and made his apology about him; that apology is me, me, me, me, Caitlin Clark, what about me, etcetera. Doesn't even end with a convincing or heartfelt statement.

It was like, "Look at me, the celebrated journalist for men's sports, DEIGNING to descend and see what the little ladies are up to! Let me take them all down a few pegs, establish my little flirty pecking order for future availability with the gal here. She ain't one of those. . . LESBOS, is she?"

I don't see that this is a burning offense, but it's a shunning offense. It's a "Stop it, fuckwad" offense for a boss, and it should help move the guy toward the reject pile when it comes to how he's regarded nationally. Forever.

No way...that comment was completely ridiculous and he showed his TRUE colors there. We can hate on him for his Michigan takes during the most ridiculous scandal in NCAA sports, he is a sports writer and they aim for clicks , but this.... well that's who he is.

Like WTF was that comment, creepy , degrading, misogynistic, all the words that describe pieces of shit men like him.

Clark says that hand gesture is for her family, and he says that?!  His apology means nothing

Successfully identifying himself as the problem is only a first step.  The paper should take him off of this beat and send him to a year of training on how to be a person who does not abuse or harass women at a minimum.  Firing someone for one moment of bad judgement seems extreme, but being a girl dad and having watched Moxie, I'm in favor of it.  We don't need to look away or minimize this type of behavior, we should try to eliminate it.

Alright, I hate Doyel as much as the next guy, but this is getting blown way out of proportion. He made a few awkward comments at a press conference in an attempt to be playful. It was stupid and cringeworthy, but he made a genuine apology. Time to move on.

I respectfully disagree with you on this and I think it's essential we consider the source.
A journalist should know more than anyone how powerful words are.  They are tools that need to be used correctly.  This isn't a socially awkward surgeon or an engineer who didn't use person-first language in the joke she just told.  I think nailing him down on this is completely appropriate.  Especially since, as a rookie, it would be easy for him to think he has the upper hand with her right now (which he doesn't in any universe, but the dude clearly has an ego).

Second, I don't think he should go to jail, or have to surrender his laminated Long John Silver's kids menu that doubles as his Journalism U degree.  He might just have to find a new place to work.
