Submitted by Champeen on July 29th, 2020 at 11:18 AM

Clarkston (Mich.) offensive lineman Rocco Spindler is set to announce his college commitment on Saturday, August 8th at 6 p.m. Eastern.

CBS Sports HQ will air the announcement live.

Crystal balls are split 50/50 between ND and UM (4 each) BUT the 4 Michigan balls have a confidence level of 1, 5, 6 and 6.  Notre Dames confidence levels are 6, 6, 8, 8.

Even though the balls are split, this is leaning NDs way.  Losing out on the top 3 trench guys in the state of Michigan would be a fucking gut punch.

Hope he decides to come to Michigan.  It would be a gut punch, but we have taken a lot of recruits away from ND this cycle.

Got the BPONE bad on this one. He's worn a winged helmet his whole high school career (and maybe longer). JJ has been recruiting him hard for a year +. In state kid. Feels like this one would have/should have wrapped up long ago if he was coming to Michigan.

Hope to god I'm wrong.

1. We have El Hadi who is one of the top 3 trench guys on composite

2. While ND has newer crystal balls even they admit that they think this battle is too close to call so no it is not leaning ND’s way. Maybe they thought Spindler was leaning to ND a month or 2 ago, but Michigan has done an outstanding job over the quarantine and has positive momentum on their side with proximity to home, better OL talent development, and a strong recruiting class overall. ND has basically his better connection with their OL coach and that’s it.

I’m cautiously optimistic but no one really knows

Tom Loy thinks he's headed to ND, so this one's in the bag for the good guys.

Seriously though I think he comes to Michigan. His quotes in the last few weeks and months make me think he's more on board with UM than ND. The most recent crystal ball was in April. Nobody really knows here.

Feeling pessimistic. Hopefully we hear some news of the staff making an over the top effort to swing it at the very end. He's a must get. I'd rather all the staff's focus be on securing Spindler than putting energy towards Anthony but maybe we end up getting both. I feel like if we can land Spindler, the Donovan Edwards, Benny, and Rooks dominos might fall after.

"He's a must get."

So what happens if he isn't got?  Does football stop being a program at Michigan?  Does Harbaugh lose his contract extension?  Does the 'Crootin'Coord get fired?  Does the OL fall back to RichRod quality?  Does Michigan never again 'croot a Michigan high school player?

He's a really good player, so it would be great to secure his commitment.  But "must" he commit?  No, he mustn't.  He should.  But "must"?  No...

Obviously a little hyperbole but what I meant is that securing a top player in the state can go a long way and i'm fairly convinced Spindler picking UM would result in Edwards committing at the very least and that would give us more momentum with other recruits. Obviously the sky won't fall down if he commits to ND but it would be a big blow to the final recruiting pieces we are putting together. With Spindler, i'm 80-90% confident we land Edwards. Without him, maybe 50-60%.

Edwards has said in the past that he wants to play with some "gamers" and was waiting to see how our recruiting class shaped up before committing. The assumption is that Spindler would be one of those "gamers" that he was referring to. Atleast that was my understanding.

Rocco just announced it on Twitter himself today, along with his top 5.

The OP actually contributed something to the board, and even linked a recruiting profile which is 10x better than most recruiting posts around here. The evaluation of the CBs is something you have to dig into to understand, so they lay it out for us. You're really bent out of shape over one sentence at the end saying it would suck to miss out on him?

I'm surprised he is not picking one of the elite teams, like Clemson, Alabama, LSU or OSU? ND is not an elite program but he may just be a fan of the Irish?I hope he picks Michigan but I think we will be fine along the OL if does not. I'm more worried about the lack of DT recruits.

Yeah but we have no one at the same level as Quenton Nelson, who Rocco points out specifically in the video. I think that could be a pretty big selling point but who knows. I think Warriner does produce better OL play overall but star power can have a big affect on these kids.

Nelson got drafted in 2018 and had a different OL coach, that is barely relevant to the situation today.  Notre Dame hasn't had an OL drafted in the last two drafts despite consistently getting highly rated recruits.

Quinn, ND's new OL coach, last had someone drafted in 2011.  Warriner had 4 guys drafted THIS YEAR including a first round pick and, for 2021, Mayfield is already getting hyped as a possible first round pick after just 3 years in college (after getting rated a low 4*).

The bona fides comparison from Quinn to Warriner is not in the same galaxy.  If he goes to ND, it is for some other reason than proven OL development.

I don't think there is a formal connection - I think he is just a really good, likeable dude.

There was an interview with Marc Spindler and the good news is that he made a comment that was something like "we aren't looking for a best buddy to coach Rocco, we want someone that can take him to the next level".

Those weren't the exact words but it was close to that.  That has to be a huge positive for Ed Warinner / Michigan.

I saw that and was confused. In several other articles Corey Evans has asserted Virginia has the lead for Warley. But then he went ahead and placed a FutureCast for Michigan? He has said that Michigan is a strong contender, but probably running second. Maybe he's confident in our ability to overtake Virginia.

In other news, he listed Michigan as the leader for 5* center Efton Reid which would be an excellent get. Still a ways to go in this recruitment however.

Also, in his rundown of contenders for 5* wing Harrison Ingram, he lists Purdue and Stanford as the leaders and Michigan running in 4th. Ingram will release his top 6 on Saturday and Michigan is expected to make the cut.

In Eric Bossi's rundown of contenders for 5* center Charles Bediako, he lists Michigan as 3rd behind leader Alabama and challenger Duke.

Evans lists Michigan anywhere from 5th-7th for 5* center Chet Holmgren. Gonzaga probably is the leader here.

With the board seemingly shrinking as many of the prospects near decisions, Evans does not expect Michigan to reach out to any new names until the spring. However if we were to offer any additional point guards (say if Jaden Akins and Warley come off the board), Carter Whitt and Frankie Collins would be first in line.

Hate to be a wet blanket, but he also said this in an article today:

"As for Warley, Virginia is believed to be ahead of all others. However, I would not discount Michigan’s chances, because assistant Phil Martelli coached Warely’s father and uncle. Miamiis definitely another to monitor, and If distance isn’t a factor, Oregon could possibly lure him to the West Coast. I will say that Warley is the likelier of the two to pick Virginia."

Doesn't seem like that FutureCast holds much weight tbh
