Your comment was neutral, simply an observation, but I'll reply to yours to express my discomfort with the ensuing snark about Cade.

Cade McNamara helped lead to a result Michigan fans had been seeking for decades, and we owe him respect and thanks. There's no need to compare him to anyone.

Though his moving on to another opportunity has been bumpy, what he said about Michigan was nowhere as harsh as complaints that regularly pop up on MGoComments.

People have skipped over the best part:

"Hausmann should step in and be a difference-maker for a perennial playoff program..."

Let that sink in -- Michigan is a "perennial" playoff program. Not every once in awhile; not every few years. We do it on the regular.

Quite a change from just two years ago when we wondered if if we'd need to go into our third decade of not winning a Big Ten championship.

Would it be safe to say that getting top 15 classes and then cleaning up in the portal with known commodities would be a winning formula? Or would we still need top 10, preferably top 5 classes? I think the former, primarily because known players fill the holes you need while recruits need time to develop and still can be a bust. If you can really clean up on the portal, maybe even top 20 classes might work. It seems Michigan has finally opened up its admission standards. Won't be long before they open up NIL too, haha.

When I say clean up on the portal, I don't mean wide scale new players, but good known players to fill in gaps while recruits develop.

Excellent point.  The portal is absolutely a core component of roster construction going forward.  I think recruiting ranking alone will become less and less meaningful, and a better rating system would include both recruits and transfers in the "class".

As an aside, the portal appears to be an efficient market mechanism for balancing supply (players with specific talents) and demand (teams with openings for those talents).  I have a bit of an old-school bias and was suspicious of this change, but now see that removing the friction of restricted movement should be a net benefit to both players and teams.

This may be our preferred work-around to NIL.  We are not going to entice recruits with $$$.  But we can sell our NFL development.  Target high-ceiling players who have not realized their potential and mix them in with our more modest recruits with some occasional big-hitters.

Fentrell Cypress looks targetable. I wonder how the CB board is looking. Brian said a CB was possible. I like Cypress, and wonder about possible Olu connections with Virginia.

I haven't heard any rumbling about either UNC CBs.

The portal is where Michigan can make up ground with their stellar 2022 Team 143. Hard work is paying off. The coaches are probably spending a good amount of time on this now. It would be interesting to know the work put in. I have not heard anyone talk honestly about their staffing and execution around recruiting.

The portal is a big change, now and ongoing.

Love the line for Hausmann about his going to Michigan - "be a difference-maker for a perennial playoff program"

Perennial Playoff Program - I like the ring of that!

Hard to believe just two years ago playoffs! (queue in Jim Mora Sr) was even on our mind!

As for Cade not being in the Top 25 - when I looked at other QB, it looks like being a running threat factored in. The guy from UVA doesn't have anywhere near the overall stats that Cade had, but ran for 1200 yards in his career.

I remember watching the broadcast for Game 3 (UCONN, speaking of Jim Moras) and the color announcer was showing clips of the CSU game where UM had a similar run formation with TEs to the left. The CSU end on the weak side rushed off the end toward Corum backside when Cade was in the game. Once JJ got in, same formation, the DE waited until he saw that JJ didn't have the ball.

I think the real winner of the JJ vs. Cade contest was Corum. Defenses couldn't go all out to contain him only when the threat of JJ running existed.

There were also several plays this year when JJ got flushed from the pocket either by a blitz or a stunt. The TD throw to Edwards at Iowa was a good example. Cade is sacked or throws it away.

Wish Cade and Erick well at Iowa - done worrying about their words.
