247 (Sam Webb) vs. Rivals (EJ Holland) drama

Submitted by Magnus on December 15th, 2020 at 2:06 PM

I looked to see if this had been posted on the board already, but Sam Webb over at 247 created a post to take a giant shot at E.J. Holland of The Wolverine (LINK). The only other time I've really seen Webb - or anybody from one of the high-profile sites - design such an ill-intentioned post is when Webb did it to He Who Will Not Be Named in the last year or so. He basically called him a b**** and challenged him to show up at Donovan Edwards's announcement tomorrow and not be a b****.

I like both Webb and Holland for different reasons, but the potshots seem a little petty and immature. I mean, sure, I happen to run a blog and Brian Cook has a tramp stamp and Garrett Fishaw wears socks with sandals, but I don't publicly make fun of them for it. The guys over at Maize 'n' Brew think "Die Hard" isn't a Christmas movie, but I don't shame them for that.

Anyway, I'm not sure what has been Maize 'n' Brewing between these guys over the years, but I just think it's odd that reporters covering the same beat can't be a little more civil.

Oh, and that one guy at that one blog - you know who you are - you're a turd.

Yeah, I said it.

Happy Holidays!

You alluded to it a little bit, but Sam Webb doesn't typically act the way he did in that post. We don't know the full story or history behind their relationship.

Based on what Webb said, it seems like they have some history and disagree with their work styles. I have also seen/heard from other places and people that Holland has shit-talked recruits.

Also, it seems like Webb doesn't like how Holland continues to travel around and (at least in Webb's mind) defy Covid protocols. To be fair, Holland's Twitter profile pic is him doing an interview with his mask pulled down despite being literally right next to the guy he's interviewing.

Really surprising. It's unlike Webb to call out anyone unless they are reporting things that are clearly false. From what I've heard from Holland, he seems to be pretty good about covering his facts and taking what recruits tell him.

Do you know why Webb is taking offense?

Didn't Holland infere that all the Donovan Edward's talk was just a click bait, sell more subscriptions ploy? I believe that is what started it. I believe he has said some not so nice things about his former employers at 247 and maybe Sam is sick of it. I know accusing someone in that industry of lying to sell subscriptions is about as volatile as it can get. That's questioning a person's character.

This stuff always strikes me as the weirdest fights, but not being on the boards I couldn't tell how deep the issues go.  Webb is usually pretty good, it seems, about staying professional so if he gets mad I assume it's for a pretty big reason.

"...Brian Cook has a tramp stamp and Garrett Fishaw wears socks with sandals..."

LMAO!!!  No rivalry there...

"The guys over at Maize 'n' Brew think "Die Hard" isn't a Christmas movie..."

Well, they're right - it's not.

Sad to hear that Mr Sunshine himself, Sam Webb, is using profanity at a colleague.  But hey, that's Twitter for you - where toxicity breeds with unfettered support...

I live Sam. He’s been top notch forever. Sure sometimes his access to the program wanes, but that isn’t his fault. The guy is the best in the biz, Magnus is great too.

Welcome to 2020 - where shouting loudly at each other is what passes for news or facts.  Thou who shouts loudest and fastest will create the narrative by which reality is shaped.  Social media, politicians, reality TV, ESPN talking heads replacing journalists....  Sigh.....

I guess I'm going with Michigan. Notre Dame is trying to flip Audric Estime from MSU. Oklahoma is probably going to land Camar Wheaton. And Georgia already has Lova'sea Carroll. The only school in Edwards's top four without a blue chip RB - or that's not making a late run at a flip to fill a hole - is Michigan. (Sorry, Tavierre Dunlap.)

I know some people think Edwards would have committed to Michigan already if he really wanted to, but I also know this: Recruiting doesn't always play out like you expect.

So Edwards to Michigan is my guess, but like I said, that's using logic and kids don't always act logically.

I'll believe anything anyone says about Brian, even if you had said he also wears socks with sandals. You could claim he's into falconry or he fixes broken shopping cart wheels pro-bono or he has a local artisinal sausage making side business and I'd be like sure, checks out.

No doubt Sam is in the right here. He is extremely cautious in how he approaches all aspects of his job, so if he truly goes off on someone, you can rest assured it was well deserved.

I don't know much about EJ Holland but the Michigan Rivals site has had a poor reputation over the years and is less connected and much more often wrong on recruiting scoops.
