2020 in-state ATH Maliq Carr to Purdue

Submitted by Magnus on October 13th, 2019 at 7:31 AM

I didn't see this posted on the board from Friday, but Oak Park wide receiver/tight end Maliq Carr committed to Purdue. This had been somewhat expected, but I know some were holding out hope that he would still end up at Michigan. The Wolverines were the favorites at one time and still had 14% of the crystal ball picks, but Purdue had the other 86%. He had long been targeting an October 11 commitment date.

Carr is a 4-star, the #5 tight end, and #193 player in the 2020 class. He wants to play WR in college, though at 6'4" and 230 lbs., that may not be his future.

Yes, although we'll see how that pans out. Playing two sports well at a high level is next to impossible. If you're 6'5" and 230 pounds without the time to really hone your skills, I'm not sure how much you can offer as a star basketball player. You could be a role player and come off the bench to play defense or maybe rebound, but is that worth diminishing your chances of being a high draft pick in football?

I think most guys with two-sport intentions see those dreams go bye-bye after a year or two.

If I recall correctly, the following Carr comments also immediately preceded Michigan cooling on him:

"It's a great school and they know how to win," Carr said. "They just need to get over that one little hump to beat their rival. I think I can do it, but I need to know how long coach Gattis is staying. His intentions are really holding my decision. Let's say he leaves two years after I'm there, I probably won't want to be there anymore."

Carr would also like to see freshman quarterback Joe Milton eventually take over the Wolverines offense as well.

"It's all Gattis," Carr said. "It looks really good for them. I just think they should start a different quarterback. Personally, I like (Joe Milton) just from what I've seen from him when they played Ohio State."

His interest is in going to a school that properly utilizes its receivers. Purdue has a tradition of that. Michigan doesn't. I think it's the consensus on this board that Michigan is criminally under-using its receivers this year. If M isn't throwing with these WRs and these RBs, Carr is making the logical choice for his future.

Pretty sure coaching weighs heavily into the decision of most recruits with NFL aspirations.

Seems like "style of play" is a major factor here, with Purdue having a system that makes heavy use of its receivers.

I can't imagine any elite recruit getting excited about the way Michigan is using its receivers right now.

Last year Purdue threw the ball 509 times. Michigan threw it 347 times. This year Michigan has thrown it 181 times in six games, which projects to 362 over twelves games.

I'm not really sure why I'm spending time explaining that Jim Harbaugh and Michigan don't throw the ball as much as other teams. This is a common knowledge type of thing.

We have to recruit our own state better and stop star gazing. Im sick and tired of seeing opposing team’s quality players from Michigan that we did not recruit or couldn’t land. Then maybe we will have an emotional edge in our rivalry games and more sense of pride of not only playing at Michigan but being a lifelong Michigander where you are taught from an early age to hate our opponents. Harbaugh is killin me! Hamler, Simmons, Ojemudia, Iowa’s OT, now losing a guy to Purdue...Dudek needs to re-evaluate his process.

Don’t insult me with that Maizen bullshit, try being open minded to a different approach. We play like pussies who don’t have an edge, get some home grown boys who have a lifelong hatred for our opponents to compliment the national stars.

Youre on a college football message board, where 12 year olds pose as college graduates. Just let the insults go.

And you are also correct--Iowa had a certain DT last night named Golston who tore up Penn State. Hes from Detroit.

I know you cannot get them all, but there are enough quality athletes in Michigan to stock a roster, and as weve seen, the misses with out of state talent are many, and even the ones you do get???

But yes, it is Harbaugh, so whatever He does is Golden.

I don’t think getting more in state players just for the sake of getting them is helpful. You’re using Golston as an example but he was the number 24th player in Michigan in 2016 - the same year we got the number 1 player nationally at his position and in any position. Sure he may have developed well at Iowa which is good for him. But there are countless other in state players who have gone to power 5 schools and have not done well. In recruiting your best bet for success is getting talent that has a high likelihood for success and getting more in state players is not that. As for the sentiment that players understand rivalries better because they’re from Michigan is bullshit. That can only take you so far. OSU, ND, Clemson, Bama all recruit nationally and they do well in rivalry games because they are talented, coached well, and they get themselves pumped up to win.

Apples to oranges homeboy. I’m talking about Michigan and Michigan only, and the current state of our program and recruiting. Too many factors involved once you start comparing them to other programs, let alone the top in the nation. I’m talking about fixing the current CULTURE of our program. Those other teams you mentioned don’t play soft like us, for maaaaany reasons. I think recruiting more in state players would help fix the CULTURE, which in turn would help us execute the other program strategies and philosophies.

Man... This stuff happens. Not every top tier player from MI is going to play for Michigan.

The kid had a thought process, he stuck with his preferences, he's going to Purdue where he'll play for the best team in the state of Indiana. His choice.

This lock it down stuff precludes that players don't get a say in the matter. We'll be okay.

If Michigan would have let him play WR his first year he would have committed to us, if he can do it great, if not you move him to TE, he’s another Eric All. Just get them on campus and figure out the positions later. We nitpick and pigeon hole while recruiting. My point is that having more in-state players would actually build a stronger culture and dare I say it, we might just play with a “chip on our shoulders” a little more in rivalry games and in general. My initial statement made a few different points that are not mutually exclusive. Hell, recruit some freakin wrestlers for the dline who have some toughness as opposed to soft Solomon and package deal Dwumfor and we might he in business. Give me some Martins and Taylor’s at DT. This shit isn’t complicated guys, it really isnt....

Wrestling in Florida is shit. Brady Hoke is shit. Florida is not Michigan, I could have mentioned Rob Renes if I wanted to mention out if state guys. Just ran into Martin at a wrestling recruiting event a few weeks ago and he mentioned recruiting more wrestlers for O and D line. Those former allbig ten players who played in the NFL are so ignorant, I’ll go with your take instead.

I hate to say it but missing out on kids from Michigan isn’t going to hurt the program.  Elite kids like DPJ are a must get but I wouldn’t get worked up about some of the others.  You’ll know what I mean if you’ve watched high school football in a state like Texas or California.

No you better start star gazing or start developing players better. Only 3 top 100 recruits in the 2018&19 classes, zero in 2018 isn’t winning any championships any time soon. I would bet everyone on this board admits OSU has more talent, correct?Thats because they get 5+top 100 recruits year in year out. OSU actually had more 5*’s 13 than Harbaugh recruited 12 top 100 players in 16,17,18 and 2019, OSU 43 top 100. That’s a big difference even if OSU loses half its class to the portal.

And what would be the rational reasons to commit to Michigan right now? A cool helmet? A fight song? The great weather???

Im just wondering why a guy who has his whole life ahead of him would want to have the same mentality as a guy who spends his life on a message board.

For all the complaining by our fan base look at Purdue’s record since 2013:

1-11

3-9

2-10

3-9

7-6

6-7

2-4

Comparing Purdue to Michigan is ridiculous.  If he had committed to OSU, Clemson, UGA etc I would agree with you

At this point in the season, Purdue is leading all BIG conference teams in total passing attempts, total passing yardage, and passing yardage/game.

Michigan is currently 9th, 8th, and 8th in the conference in those same categories.

Purdue is averaging 42 passing attempts per game, while Michigan is averaging 30. Over the course of a full season, that's potentially 150 more opportunities for Purdue receivers to get the ball than Michigan receivers.

If your primary dream is to be a WR in the NFL—however realistic or not—then it's not a hard decision.

Especially if you want to play for a school that can beat Ohio State.
