'Coachable' Fixes
It's my first thread, so feel free to neg away so that I can't post a new topic in the future.
Watching the game, I noticed a few areas that seemed like issues that could readily be fixed if noticed by the coaching staff. What are your thoughts on these? Any other ones I missed?
(Additionally, I don't consider having Speight not overthrow a receiver or not throw high coachable. It's obvious he knew not to throw high/out of bounds/etc. He just didn't execute.)
- Punt Protection from the Long Snapper: Having the long snapper required to snap and then drop back in protection is crazy. There has to be someone(s) behind him to help pickup the blitzer coming up the middle. This one was obviously costly as the punt was blocked and UF got the ball on Michigan's side of the field. This has to be fixed by next game. (actually, it probably doesn't because Michigan might not even need to punt)
- DPJ needs to keep that ball tucked into his body on returns: Noticed this on a few of his returns that he kept the ball away from his body, especially when he tried to juke/cut. Florida didn't get a clean shot, but if this continues, it's going to cause some fumbles. The good news is that Harbaugh has already recognized this issue and addressed it with the Media. http://www.freep.com/story/sports/college/university-michigan/wolverines/2017/09/05/michigan-wolverines-football-donovan-peoples-jones/635803001/?hootPostID=75a1a14fd3c2848fcbed2e744412631d Per Harbaugh: "Got to get that ball a little bit tighter, a little better ball security."
-
Wilton Speight keeps his mouth guard in his helmet on some running plays: Haven't had a chance to rewatch every play (and sometimes you can't tell based on the TV cameras) but there were multiple times that Wilton had his mouthguard in his helmet and every time it was a Michigan run. This has to get fixed unless this is the ultimate gamesmanship and Harbaugh wanted him to do this and they'll call a PA pass against PSU/tOSU/Wisky with the mouth guard in the helmet.
NOTE: I'm going to edit #3. There is a chance I was mistaken and unless I see video/photo evidence it's not fair to note this one. Additionally, he could have just forgotten on a single play.

waiting for UFR, but i didnt see a ton of mental errors (mis-alignments, missed assignments, false starts etc.) which is good for a young team in week one.

The biggest thing I saw were the receivers continuing to spin the ball after a 15yd drive stalling penalty called for that fairly early on.
In fact the same receiver flagged in the first place did it twice more in the game, I would think Harbaugh/Brown would make this go away instantly.
Just a really dumb way to hurt your team, make the catch, get up and either leave the ball on the field or hand it to the ref.

Dang it, I haven't had a double post in a couple of years.

The offense making an effort to tackle after an interception.
September 6th, 2017 at 12:11 PM ^
Yes. Jim made reference to that multiple times.

Chomping at the bit, I believe is what he said.

Great one! I meant to add that one and it slipped my mind. Good news is Harbaugh already mentioned that he will fix this issue.

He mentioned DPJ ball security too :)

players were absolutely dogging it during those INTs.
I think someone in the liveblog called out Wheatly, but admittedly I haven't rewatched those plays to check for myself.
I'm sure Harbaugh ripped everyone who needed it a new blowhole.,

Your attention to detail is quite dope. I never notice stuff like this.
September 6th, 2017 at 12:12 PM ^
he even upvoted his own post! I was tempted just to ignore but felt compelled to downvote to offset
September 6th, 2017 at 12:15 PM ^
OP needs to stop inviting down votes. There are peeps here who will follow orders.
September 6th, 2017 at 12:25 PM ^
seems like if you ask for a downvote you get a downvote; if you ask for an upvote you get a downvote... which goes back to the first rule of points is don't talk about points?
Also - personally I think this is more of a comment on either the UFR or a snowflake thread but that could be just me.
September 6th, 2017 at 12:55 PM ^
It's not about points. It's about public misrepresentation. It's about mastervoting (self-voting). Dont mastervote in public, let others jack your points up or down.

September 6th, 2017 at 2:15 PM ^
The votes cast there don't affect the OP's point total.
September 6th, 2017 at 2:20 PM ^
I always just up vote with my many alter-ego accou...uh, whoops? How do you edit a post?
September 6th, 2017 at 1:16 PM ^
How can you tell he upvoted himself? I don't see anything on the site that indicates where upvotes and downvotes come from.

September 6th, 2017 at 2:19 PM ^
completely relevant. that's what the voting is supposed to be used for on this site. downvote what you don't like and you'll see less of it moving forward.

I noticed the same thing with DPJ. It looks like he could develop into a great PR, but if he keeps holding the ball like he was against Florida, we could see some fumbles if he gets hit hard.
I read the mouthguard comment somewhere else.
September 6th, 2017 at 12:27 PM ^
Kids these days. I remember getting screamed at for not switching the ball to the boundary side. Also: "HIGH AND TIGHT!!! HOLD THE BALL HIGH AND TIGHT!!!!"
September 6th, 2017 at 12:47 PM ^
That and "keep your helmet on when on the sidelines!"
"Are you an All-American? Then keep your helmet on!"

Didn't include the switching of arms because while Evans held it in the wrong arm during 1st half, he corrected this issue in the 2nd half. Guessing that was a coachable issue that was coached up during half time.
September 6th, 2017 at 3:02 PM ^
I see pro's do it all the time. I don't think Evans is the only ball carrier who fails to carry the ball the way God and Bo intended.

This is on Jay Harbaugh.
September 6th, 2017 at 12:16 PM ^
the mouthpiece, I believe Michigan would get charged a timeout - didn't OSU have this happen against us?
September 6th, 2017 at 12:34 PM ^
Is how I think they call it. It's not rare to see a college player that leaves his piece stuck on his helmet. It's rare to see the refs ever call it.
September 6th, 2017 at 12:46 PM ^
Speight does that on EVERY play. He doesn't put the mouthguard back in until he's under center or in the shotgun position. I don't think he forgot it like the Op believes.
September 6th, 2017 at 1:17 PM ^
Why is a picture of Wilton throwing with a mouthguard in relevant? OP and others are talking about running plays.
The full game is on YouTube. I think it would be pretty easy to figure out definitively if this happened. Anyone remember specific plays?
September 6th, 2017 at 2:31 PM ^
definitely possible I made a mistake.

Never play poker with OP.
I never noticed the mouth guard thing. Was that something you just noticed, or did he do it last year too?
September 6th, 2017 at 12:19 PM ^
noticed it against Florida, but not last year. I just assumed that the mouthguard had a Jumpman on it and Speight was required to leave it out on a certain number of plays.
September 6th, 2017 at 12:50 PM ^
He has ALWAYS tucked it into his facemask between plays.
September 6th, 2017 at 12:52 PM ^
I noticed. I thought against Florida that I saw at least two occasions that he ran a play with it still in there.

two different times. The first time, we got the penalty. The second time was not nearly as flagrant, but I screamed "Damn it, you did it again!" and was thankful there was no flag. I am guessing the "spin" is a practice habit that will go away-- right away.
September 6th, 2017 at 2:26 PM ^
I'm back bitches!
Tough offseason and that was his first catch. I think he was just fired up and I can forgive that.
September 6th, 2017 at 12:52 PM ^
I had the same thought regarding the long snapper... No way you are blocking a punt while driving the snapper back without blowing him up the moment he snaps it.
September 6th, 2017 at 2:25 PM ^
Two things:
Perry is one I should have added. Good catch. Especially considering HE DID IT A SECOND TIME and Eubanks did it too.
On the punt block, Florida rusher didn't 'hit' the snapper. Maybe grazed him but definitely didn't 'hit' him. However, I'm not sure on the rule. If it's any contact, than yeah, probably should have been called.
September 6th, 2017 at 12:43 PM ^
YOU notice something that THIS coaching staff does not.
Come on man. Eliminate mistakes and get better.
We will be Tough To Beat.
Go Blue.

I'm damn impressed by the mouthguard think. Email Harbaugh and see if you can get a job scouting other teams!
September 6th, 2017 at 12:47 PM ^
Speight to use the TE's more in the passing game.

6. Bush needs to watch the Shawn Crable hit on Troy Smith 20 times and make sure he never does anything like that. Dude had some vicious blows last year (see Peppers punt return v PSU last year) and continued Saturday. Love his speed and power but scared he'll do something bad at some point and get the shoe.
7. Speight lowers his crosshairs 2 feet.
