'Coachable' Fixes

Submitted by rs207200 on

It's my first thread, so feel free to neg away so that I can't post a new topic in the future.

Watching the game, I noticed a few areas that seemed like issues that could readily be fixed if noticed by the coaching staff.  What are your thoughts on these?  Any other ones I missed?

(Additionally, I don't consider having Speight not overthrow a receiver or not throw high coachable.  It's obvious he knew not to throw high/out of bounds/etc.  He just didn't execute.)

  1. Punt Protection from the Long Snapper: Having the long snapper required to snap and then drop back in protection is crazy.  There has to be someone(s) behind him to help pickup the blitzer coming up the middle.  This one was obviously costly as the punt was blocked and UF got the ball on Michigan's side of the field. This has to be fixed by next game.  (actually, it probably doesn't because Michigan might not even need to punt)
  2. DPJ needs to keep that ball tucked into his body on returns: Noticed this on a few of his returns that he kept the ball away from his body, especially when he tried to juke/cut.  Florida didn't get a clean shot, but if this continues, it's going to cause some fumbles.   The good news is that Harbaugh has already recognized this issue and addressed it with the Media.  http://www.freep.com/story/sports/college/university-michigan/wolverines/2017/09/05/michigan-wolverines-football-donovan-peoples-jones/635803001/?hootPostID=75a1a14fd3c2848fcbed2e744412631d  Per Harbaugh: "Got to get that ball a little bit tighter, a little better ball security."
  3. Wilton Speight keeps his mouth guard in his helmet on some running plays: Haven't had a chance to rewatch every play (and sometimes you can't tell based on the TV cameras) but there were multiple times that Wilton had his mouthguard in his helmet and every time it was a Michigan run.  This has to get fixed unless this is the ultimate gamesmanship and Harbaugh wanted him to do this and they'll call a PA pass against PSU/tOSU/Wisky with the mouth guard in the helmet.

NOTE: I'm going to edit #3.  There is a chance I was mistaken and unless I see video/photo evidence it's not fair to note this one.  Additionally, he could have just forgotten on a single play.

The biggest thing I saw were the receivers continuing to spin the ball after a 15yd drive stalling penalty called for that fairly early on.

In fact the same receiver flagged in the first place did it twice more in the game, I would think Harbaugh/Brown would make this go away instantly.

Just a really dumb way to hurt your team, make the catch, get up and either leave the ball on the field or hand it to the ref.

seems like if you ask for a downvote you get a downvote; if you ask for an upvote you get a downvote... which goes back to the first rule of points is don't talk about points?

Also - personally I think this is more of a comment on either the UFR or a snowflake thread but that could be just me.

I noticed the same thing with DPJ. It looks like he could develop into a great PR, but if he keeps holding the ball like he was against Florida, we could see some fumbles if he gets hit hard.

I read the mouthguard comment somewhere else.

Hand the damn ball to the officials after the whistle. I'm guessing Perry and probably Eubanks are learning that lesson on the steps of Michigan Stadium this week. Edit: regarding the snapper, he's supposed to be protected until he brings his head back up. Hitting him before that is supposed to be a 15 yard roughing the snapper penalty. FL should have gotten called a couple times for that, including on the block.

Two things:

Perry is one I should have added.  Good catch.  Especially considering HE DID IT A SECOND TIME and Eubanks did it too.

On the punt block, Florida rusher didn't 'hit' the snapper.  Maybe grazed him but definitely didn't 'hit' him.  However, I'm not sure on the rule.  If it's any contact, than yeah, probably should have been called.

YOU notice something that THIS coaching staff does not.

Come on man.  Eliminate mistakes and get better.

6. Bush needs to watch the Shawn Crable hit on Troy Smith 20 times and make sure he never does anything like that.  Dude had some vicious blows last year (see Peppers punt return v PSU last year) and continued Saturday.  Love his speed and power but scared he'll do something bad at some point and get the shoe.

7. Speight lowers his crosshairs 2 feet.
