July 2009

August 1 - Saturday

A single mailbag item related to someone leaving the Alan Branch picture at a PSU fan co-worker’s cubicle.

August 3 - Monday

Brian recently ranted against piped-in music in the stadium, and expressed a desire for amplifying the band. He got a lot of feedback about why that would be very difficult.

Unverified Voracity GETTIN IT YGM STYLE. Lloyd Carr and Jim Delany don’t think a playoff is going to happen.

Tim looks at which commits’ rankings probably aren’t going to rise any further.

August 4 - Tuesday

Tuesday Recruitin’. MI P Mike Sadler committed to MSU, so it’s WI P Will Hagerup or bust for ‘M’.

August 5 - Wednesday

BlogPoll Revamp 2009.

Mailbag. How many scholarships should be allocated to each position? Will the stadium construction change the noise level inside?

Now Tim looks at the commits who should move up in the rankings.

August 6 - Thursday

It was thought that all of the 2009 class was cleared and ready to play. However, now it appears that Justin Turner is having a paperwork issue and Adrian Witty is waiting for a good score in order to qualify.

Unverified Voracity Bids Anti-Jim Davis Adieu. Jim Harbaugh doesn’t like the idea of scheduling FCS teams, with a veiled shot at ‘M’.

Tim went to the Michigan high school media day and got interviews with Devin Gardner, Austin White, and WR DeAnthony Arnett.

August 7 - Friday

Ah, there’s a broken down vehicle that needs to be rescued? It’s hard to figure this one out because of broken picture links.

New additions to the MGoStore! But sadly there are more broken picture links. There will also be a pick the shirt contest before the season starts, designs provided by Six Zero.

August 9 - Sunday

Details have come out on Justin Feagin’s departure. It was...not great.

No cocaine ever showed up, this Burke guy tried to scare/murder Feagin by filling a bottle with gasoline and setting it on fire outside his dorm room, etc, etc, etc. You know, typical college stuff.

August 10 - Monday

Sad update on Vada Murray’s health.

Unverified Voracity Doesn’t Talk Much. Feagin tried to transfer to Appalachian St. They said no.

A 2011 recruiting primer. Lots of fun names here: QB Braxton Miller, RB Dee Hart, TE Kelvin Benjamin, DT Tim Jernigan, LB Trey DePriest.

August 11 - Tuesday

A look at oversigning at USF

The Feagin issue devolves into a Carr vs. Rodriguez discussion of their players with criminal incidents.

Bullet points from first presser and practice.

August 12 - Wednesday

Wednesday Recruitin’. MI CB Dior Mathis is sadly down to Oregon and MSU. However, there are a number of secondary options on the board still with CA CB Joshua Shaw, CB S Dietrich Riley, and FL CB Tony Grimes.

Unverified Voracity Panics, Reacts. Jim Comparoni says MSU RB Glenn Winston looks sluggish and assumes he must have missed some summer conditioning. Jim must not have heard that Winston has been in jail since April.

Brian will be speaking in NYC next week.

CB Justin Turner is finally in! Sounds likely that LB Marell Evans and FB Vince Helmuth will transfer.

August 13 - Thursday

Unverified Voracity Takes Useless Cover. TN SF Casey Prather has set an official visit ‘M’.

Grow mustaches, for a good cause.

Tim looks at whether defenses have caught up with the spread and if they will be able to.

August 14 - Friday

There is much disdain from the MGoBlog community for the Free Press, and rightfully so. Drew Sharp commends Dantonio in the Winston case and demeans Rodriguez for bringing Feagin.

Tim shares some tidbits from an open media practice

Denard didn't look too shaky during practice. I know other reports have been concerned with his throwing, but it didn't seem too bad. That doesn't mean he's the next Peyton Manning, but he's certainly capable of throwing it.

Brian does a rundown of info from BTN and other sources related. This all comes in a fairly new way: twitter.

BONUS: I think this whole "everything in the world is scattered in 140-char chunks across twitter" thing is going to be rampant in the future so I inaugurated a new tag: "twitter for humans."

Rodriguez presser notes

Looks like the Talbott brothers have committed.

August 17 - Monday

Unverified Voracity in Colorless Glory. I didn’t remember that Beilein was head of the NCAA’s Ethics Committee at this point in time.

Big 10 bowls have been reshuffled. Main difference is losing the Alamo and gaining the Gator.

August 18 - Tuesday

Presser notes. Jason Forcier has not been granted eligibility and is done with his college football career.

Unverified Voracity!!! So at this point in time, you could add your Twitter profile to your account, and it would automatically tweet any diaries you wrote. Also, there was an option to share any posts to email or social media.

Preseason Blogpoll Ballot

August 19 - Wednesday

Mailbag. The CCHA has rejected Alabama Huntsville, will that open the door for Penn St? What were the practice reports coming out of the QB competition in 2004? How many scholarships will be available next year? Are we sure that Nick Sheridan starting would be a bad thing?

August 20 - Thursday

A deeper look into the terminology of a GERG defense.

Actress Patricia Heaton was on...Celebrity Jeopardy? And did something dumb? Hard to figure out from the post.

Practice notes. This is slightly out of context, but Rodriguez said:

he's not quite sure exactly what the defense is doing.

August 21 - Friday

Unverified Voracity Shames Itself. Interesting story about Mark Messner playing against Tony Mandrich on steroids.

Tim brings his Friday Night Lights feature over from Varsity Blue. This week it features all the 2008 high school stats for ‘M’s commits.

August 23 - Sunday

Paul gives a recap of a women’s soccer game against Arkansas.

August 24 - Monday

So apparently, Brian left his laptop on top of his car, in Canada, overnight, in the rain. He’s trying to recover as much of the season preview as possible and finish it on an old, slow PC.

SIDE NOTE: the laptop currently in a hospital bed with an extremely erratic pulse has not only been on for basically two straight years but it’s suffered a vast array of indignities. The fan’s been tetchy for a while. When I took it to New York I dropped it, hard, shattering a hinge but leaving the functionality of the thing uncompromised. Now it’s gamely whispering all my data onto its will after being rained on and almost dying. I’m thinking of nicknaming Junior Hemingway “Dell Vostro 1500.”

All three QBs might play in the opener? Well maybe not. But the underlying story is the Denard might be the long term answer at QB. Fred Jackson says he’s never seen anyone so fast! (Oh well, that might not mean so much.)

August 25 - Tuesday

It’s The Most Unverified Voracity Ever says Fred Jackson.

Mailbag. Will fans boo Sheridan if he comes out on the field? Should we be concerned that Rodriguez doesn’t have much of a coaching tree? What are good parking options on gameday?

August 26 - Wednesday

Indiana just sold a 2010 home game for three million dollars.

Preseason Blogpoll

More presser notes (there were a lot of these…). Rodriguez still says all three QBs might see action in the opener.

Brian and Tim took a tour of the stadium renovations. Unfortunately, the picture gallery doesn’t work.

August 27 - Thursday

Brian gives his take on the luxury boxes

Unverified Voracity Shows You the Future

Friday Night Lights. Only one game so far.

August 28 - Friday

Unverified Voracity Deletes Six Jokes

Media day notes from the players.

Recap of commit OH WR Jerald Robinson game from last night.

A mailbag just for the luxury boxes.

August 29 - Saturday

Huber Heights recap featuring the Talbott brothers and uncommitted QB Braxton Miller.

Liveblog for the Inkser vs. Pioneer game i.e. Devin vs. Ricardo.

August 30 - Sunday

Ah, we finally come to the second - and most significant - of the Free Press jihads. This post starts with looking at the relevant rules related to required hours and such.

Mike Forcier and Mike Scholfield say the Free Press claims are ridiculous.

Do the freshmen who talked about their summer activities really know what the rules are?

August 31 - Monday

Highlights from Devin Gardner’s first game. He’s good. Better than Braxton.

MSU QB Andrew Maxwell said he’s at the football facility all day too. But...that’s during fall camp, so it doesn’t matter.

Unverified Voracity Addresses the Rest of the Universe. Adrian Witty might yet be able to make the team.

Rodriguez press conference (non working link).

Site is crashing, now in low bandwith mode.

Recap of items coming out of other media outlets

Working Youtube clip from the Rodriguez presser

Brian will be going on WTKA this afternoon to talk about the jihad.

A round up of more news items

Sorry this is late. I finished it up in a maternity recovery room at Butterworth hospital after my wife delivered twins. That's the good part. The bad part is that I was working through the final two days of August - when the Freep dropped their allegations - during the first half of the Army game. I think needles under my fingernails would be preferable to that combination.

That Freep article still makes my blood boil. MSU had a pedophile on its training staff, and its revenue sports had juiced-up thugs running amok. AAU basketball was (and is) a well known cess-pool. ND got a kid killed and no one was fired. And, just a couple of years later we had David Brandon running the Athletic Dept like he was Robert Mugabe, and no one outside of Ann Arbor had any inkling.  Yet these crack reporters focused on 15 extra minutes of stretching. Reminded me of the Pink Panther movie where Clouseau hassles the blind street vendor about having a license while a bank robbery with an alarm sounding occurs 10 feet away.

My wife and I took a tour of the luxury suites and club seats during my daughter's freshman year in 2010.  I believe it was the first weekend in Nov.  So, some 14 months or so after Brian observed that the new fancy seating areas weren't sold out, well, they still weren't sold out.  I agree with Brian's take that the outdoor club seats on the east side of the stadium are the best.  Protection from rain, outdoors with the crowd, and the ability to go inside to warm-up, cool-down, get food or use a nice restroom.  On the drive home after the tour, we decided to buy a pair of club seats.  Still glad we did that.
