It's Official! Nussmeier as OC and QB Coach!

Submitted by MLaw06 on

Michigan has just released their official press release.  Nussmeier will be the OC and QB Coach.

"Doug is a highly respected offensive coordinator and has earned a reputation as being a great mentor to quarterbacks, specifically, where he's coached Pro Bowlers, top NFL draft choices and Heisman Trophy finalists," said Hoke. "Doug has been successful at every coaching stop with his balanced and explosive offenses, and he brings national championship experience. He is an excellent addition to our coaching staff and football program, and we are excited to have Doug, Christi and their children join the Michigan family."

"I am extremely excited to join the University of Michigan and work with Brady Hoke, the staff and players," said Nussmeier. "I'm proud of what we accomplished in two seasons at Alabama, and I owe a great deal to Coach Saban for that opportunity. Michigan is a program I've always had deep respect for, and I'm looking forward to getting started in Ann Arbor and being a part of the great tradition there."

Wait, but numerous people have insisted that we have a designated QB coach, a guy who isn't married and doesn't watch TV and just coaches the quarterbacks. There's no way Nussmeier can do both successfully - message boarders told me so!

College football is a "what have you done for me lately" kind of industry. These guys are extremely well compensated and I'm sure you would agree we have not gotten the results a multi million dollar staff should provide. They are certainly not above criticism and calling them a "MAC level staff" is hardly a personal insult. I'll agree that personal attacks are not warranted but at the end of the day we are the ones footing this bill and do have every right to express our opinions especially on a message board. Anyway, I'm excited to see what the future holds and do believe this new staff should have its two to three years to right the ship.

After two head coach search "processes" which can charitably be described as clusters, the Athletic Department got this one right.  (I am assuming that Borgess was told this decison prior to yesterday's announcement.)

A tough decision was handled in a very understated way that ended up with an extremely well qualified candidate taking the job.  There was zero drama, no drawn out process, and not even a single post tracking a private jet.

This was well handled and you have to give credit to Hoke and Brandon for that.

call for a two-point conversion and Bama ran the clock out against Auburn, this announcement wouldn't be happening. Not sure if Nuss is more or less than Borges when it comes to developing quarterbacks who during the Borges tenure had days that far surpassed the best ones of any previous qb at Michigan. Just saying perception isn't everything. Sometime numbers don't lie, even if the only ones that matter now are wins and losses, not how you actually get the job done.

I mean would you rather have Denard Robinson, Devin Gardner or Connor Cook running your offense?

changed my approach to viewing Michigan football in 2014. After this season, I had not intented to watch many games especially if staff changes had not been made.

Now my interest has been regenerated and looking forward to the 2014 season. I wonder if they will let him bring in a new OL coach.

Also, isn't GM nearing retirement age? Since we are opeing the pocket book maybe we can bring in Kirby Smart as well.

Part of me says "wee" we just hired Alabama's OC.

Another part of me says "WTF? Why would His Evilness let his OC go?"

Is it that Saban just has standards so high they cannot be met by normal humans?

Or did he not really give a shit because this dude is a bum?

I hate to be skeptical, because I really want to be happy about this, but I need a narrative to reassure me.

What about this: Saban is such an asshole that this guy, who is not only a great coach but a truly good human being, was just waiting for his chance to flee from the Evil Empire.

Yep, works for me.

Supposedly, with the exit of AJ McCarron (sp?), Saban is intrigued by the spread offense (you know, the one he despises because it causes defensive players to run out of breath). Apparently he had a meeting with Lane Kiffin, in December, and liked what Kiffy-boy had to show him. Is Kiff is the next OC at Bama? Maybe. If the next-in-line QB, at Bama, is more of a mobile guy, it may happen.

will be interesting to see whether/where he has the ability to get Michigan "in" for recruiting.  Doesn't seem like he's been anywhere long enough to have deep roots, but would be nice if he could cherry-pick some from Cali and one or two from down south.
