25 Years Ago Today.....

This was my first game as a student, hot as shit. I kept my ticket stub in my wallet for years. If I recall correctly there was no official student section for this "Pigskin Classic".

My last game as a student was the 1998 Rose Bowl. Two pretty decent bookends.

That games was the hottest game I've ever been to in Ann Arbor.  Got one of the worst sunburns at a football game, but so worth it.

It was so early that the Band didn't have a typical halftime show as I recall.  They stood in formation and played songs.  I don't recall any moving formations during halftime.

I was at home listening on the radio while I was doing yard work, and it was roasting. I can't imagine how hot it must have been inside the stadium.

That game went a long way towards reducing the trauma of the Colorado game of the previous season.

We had a hella-sweet party the night before since it was move-in week.  By the end of the night I somehow ended up wandering around inside U-Towers trying to find some girls who were yelling at us from their windows to come up.  My roommate's dad who played football back in the 60s was up for the weekend and he got pretty hammered and ended up knocking on the door of his old frat (Sigma Chi) and demanded they give him "The Challenge", which he said consisted of all the brothers lining the stairway and he would try to run to the top while they pummeled him.  They told him to get off their porch before they called the cops.

Anyways, I didn't go to the game.  I was hung over big time and watched with fellow MgoUser EvilEmpire in my apartment.  Ahhh, memories.

I remember the heat and hearing a new name from the PA announcer -- a freshman DB named Woodson who was involved in some plays.  Brady was there too on the sideline.  So in addition to memorable ending, this game can also be remembered as the first college game for those two.

I still have my red tag Nike jersey for Scott Dreisbach from that year. I know the #12 isn’t a great UM number, but the jersey is beautiful, with the embossed M on the shoulders, it’s still my fave. Too bad Scott couldn’t stay healthy for an extended period of time.

Mercury's post game interview went something like...

Reporter: "Do you think you caught the ball in bounds?"

Mercury: "Yes. They pay the referees to make the call and they pay me to catch the ball."

It didn't go over well with the Michigan haters.

What a game though and you are correct, no student section. That game was not part of the student ticket package because it happened before students officially arrived back for fall semester.

I know that I'm going to get negged into oblivion for this, but this is the only game that I have fallen asleep while watching.  I went to bed at halftime because the game was just so dead.  I found out later that evening that we went down 17-0 at some point and then score 18 points in the final minutes.

I've had tickets since '89 and that was, bar none, the worst weather game I've ever been to.  Worse than the 5-0 Purdue game (which was actually fun).  Worse than the (WMU/CMU?) game that was rained out.  Worse than the NW game everyone left at halftime.  Intense heat and tightly packed stadium are a bad combination.

In the second half I started to say that I would quit watching if Michigan punted as it would mean that there wasn't much chance of winning with time running out.  Michigan kept scoring and I saw it all (on TV.)  Fantastic finish.

Not part of the student ticket package, so this was only one of two home games I missed as a student.....the other being Colorado. I sure knew how to miss the doozies.

I forgot about Butterfield FORTUNATELY dropping the short pass with 4 seconds left.  I also forgot that Vermeil was pretty decent as a color guy.

I remember watching this game when I lived and worked in OKC. I had to sell my season tickets in 1990 when my job moved me down there. I wish I could have been there for this game.

I had a duty day on my submarine that day.  We were in port in Norfolk where UVA was the "hometown" team.  I talked so much crap before the game!  Every time I came through the mess deck I took a ration of shit from the guys about the game.  I was able to watch the last quarter.  That was sweet!  Oh how I wish kids now could be as confident about an opener as I was then.

I was living in Japan at the time and working as a US military contractor which gave me access to the bases. I went to Yokota air Base in western Tokyo and, as was the norm, strapped in at the Military Air Command terminal and watch the game on AFRTS on a big screen. They sold Budweiser for 50 cents a can out of pop machines and I had a bunch.

There was a UM grad who was teaching in Tokyo and found a way to sneak on to Yokota by following the tracks of a local train line that cut through the west side of the base and then walking over the highway on a pedestrian bridge to the east side where the MAC Terminal is. That particular night it had been raining quite a bit and he had to dive into a puddle to avoid being hit by a train!

I remember walking out of the terminal after the game, a bit drunk, into the blazing morning sun.

The dude who sneaked on base did it for just about every game. I would have brought him on had he not been pretty strange. You have to love his commitment to the cause as he would have gone to jail had he been caught!
