Wisconsin 49, Michigan 11 Comment Count

If the season's going to be a blazing disaster, might as well see how high the flames can go.

The score somehow understates how humiliating a loss this was for a program that finds itself 1-3 for the first time since 1967. After the first quarter, Wisconsin held a 129-1 edge in total yardage; Michigan had twice as many turnovers as yards. On the opening play of the second quarter, Wisconsin's fullback plunged in for his second touchdown of the evening to make the score 21-0.

The ensuing possession ended when M running back Zach Charbonnet ran for three yards off tackle on third-and-eight. Only a pandemic prevented Jim Harbaugh from being subjected to a chorus of boos. The Badgers covered 74 yards in six plays to extend the lead to 28, which in most video game households means it's time to hand the controller to someone else. If only.

The Wolverines embarked on their best drive of the half—not a high bar, considering their first four went for two interceptions and two three-and-outs. After Chris Evans was ruled down just short of the goal line upon review, Joe Milton lined up in a shotgun formation that tipped a quarterback run. Wisconsin called timeout. Michigan came back out showing the same look and Milton got stuffed on a keeper.

At that point, the program seemed dead-set on becoming a meme, and not in a good way. A play initially ruled a Danny Davis catch and fumble looked suspect on first glance, which didn't stop the official team account from tweeting their ready-made turnover graphic, then having to issue an update:

The play was overturned. After losing the chance to put points on the board before the half, Michigan went into the tunnel down a historic number of points:

The official tweet was brief.

Getting the ball to start the second half, Michigan stalled out in Wisconsin territory, then seized the opportunity to be meme'd again:

Huzzah.

Michigan eventually saved some face with an impressive diving touchdown grab by Mike Sainristil, though he caught it from backup Cade McNamara after Joe Milton was benched with 98 yards and two picks on 19 attempts. Milton looked overwhelmed, though he didn't have much help; five Wisconsin ballcarriers finished with more yards than M's leading rusher, Charbonnet, who had 21 on three carries.

In fact, because the defense never figured out how to stop UW runs to the edge all night, the Wolverines finished on the wrong side of a Rushing Rutger: 49 Wisconsin points, 47 Michigan rushing yards.

A fourth-quarter fullback trap when Wisconsin was killing clock went for 43 yards to set up a touchdown. This is Rutgers-level football from a program that has no business playing that way. Start the search, please. There's nothing left to explore here anymore except the depths.

No more wins this 'season'... unless they just simplify the offense and let the QB throw it up.
It seems so overly complex most of the time. And yes, if you are trying to beat good teams, then you will need that but we are way beyond that now. Just keep it simple and maybe win another game for the players

Harbaugh should really just announce that he is stepping down now. Use Don Brown as interim, let someone else run the defense and let Gattis loose, to run the O.

Then, announce a new coach before January. JH is done.

Hopefully it is someone with a ton of energy but a part of me wonders if this is ALSO a systemic problem with the leadership at the University. The commitment to winning versus public relations bullshit.

Use Don Brown as interim?  A dinosaur that should have been let go 2 years ago and has been completely exposed since Mattison left and when he doesn't have NFL talent across the d-line and secondary?  No thanks.

I'll go with the young, African American coach - Gattis - who has at least tried to shake thinks up and can hopefully better connect with young black players.

Reading comprehension is your friend.

If Harbaugh resigns, and we go interim route....

Don’t hire the old guy who has been exposed with as a one trick pony and whose defense was nuked by OSU 2 years in a row

Instead, go with the newer coach with a much shorter resume of “fail”, and hopefully the fact that he’s younger and black helps him connect to players snd recruits such that we hold on to a few.

We are 1980s NWern levels of bad. I have never posted this, except maybe in jest. But, Fire Harbaugh, Gattis and don brown. Clean house.

Hire  1. Urban, 2. Rich Rod, or even 3. Wayne Fontes.

Actually, I was generally ready to give events this year a pass due to the pandemic. We've lost more key players than some other teams and things are just weird. I don't know that this is a good environment for a coaching search, and the short season without non-conference opponents makes things tough.

But losing games with a young team is different from losing a locker room and, crucially, scaring off recruits. That's the sort of thing that can hurt a program for years. It might not be fair, and it might not be optimal, but the longer this takes, the worse it is for the program.

Tom Allen would not be a good cultural fit for Michigan and might be a terrible recruiter, but Michigan could get someone at his level and see an immediate upgrade next year if he simply retained the talent we have (I have no inside info on this but would not be surprised to see guys like Dax Hill look elsewhere just to get off the sinking ship) and modestly coached up the young talent that is there.

At this point they have to cut ties with Harbaugh. There’s not a ton of talent on this roster, but the talent that is there will all be looking to transfer.

And putting together a recruiting class in this dumpster fire is going to be impossible.

Whoever takes over next season is going to have a post-Carr level mess to clean up.

It's a young roster. Not a lot of top-line blue-chippers, but a lot of guys have promise. Our RBs are good! They just don't have anywhere to run. I'm not ready to pull the plug on Milton, and McNamara is a legit talent. We don't have a #1 receiver but we have some quick guys to build around. Our OL is young and it should be noted missing two guys, which means we have some legit undesirable line combos out there.

On D, I think we have guys we can work with to form a decent defense with the right system and coaching. Again, youth helps us here.

A good coach can put all of these guys in the right place. Serious true or false: Paul Chryst and his staff, or Tom Allen and his staff, would take this exact roster and produce better results. True, right? And that's without them ruining various other QBs or running off top prospects like Harbaugh has.

Harbaugh isn't a total incompetent, and when he came here in 2015 there was an immediate upgrade. But he has worn out his welcome. In fact, every single thing that we were warned about by the San Francisco media we all enjoyed dunking on in December '14 has come true.

We have a roster that can compete for second place in the conference behind OSU. It's that simple.

Yes to your question. Chryst or Allen would get more out of this team. But only if they had them from the start. There’s a lot of broken players on this team.

The RBs are OK...nothing special. But also prime transfer candidates because of high recruiting profiles and low mileage. Some of the OL might develop into good players. There’s at least a track record there.

But that’s it on offense. None of the WRs are better than mid tier B1G talent, the TEs are awful, and QB is also bottom of B1G bad.

On defense...Dax is the only one with talent outside of Paye and Hutchinson who are hurt. Not a single notable promising player anywhere else.

I get what you're saying on offense, but it'd be interesting to see what a real good offensive coordinator could do with these guys.  The oline is young.  I figured there were going to be growing pains this year with them, but this is one position group where at least according to the recruiting rankings they should have a number of really good pieces to build around.  Cade is really young, and for the most part the receivers are too.  Look at a team like Indiana.  They don't and haven't recruited at the level of Michigan but the last few years they put offenses on the field that give the best teams in the Big Ten fits.  Yeah, Michigan doesn't have the talent on the offensive side of the ball of an OSU but a good OC and position coaches should be able to put a solid offense on the field with the players Michigan has.

Defensively, it's maybe a different story.  There are some position groups that do to recruiting and attrition appear to be lacking.  Maybe again, it's coaching but I think there are some holes on the defensive side of the roster.

I generally respect your viewpoints, but what have you seen in 5+ years of hairball's esteemed resume to say that he should remain our coach:

  • 0-5 vs OSU including the 2 worst defeats in the modern era
  • 3-3 vs MSU
  • ZERO B1G titles and/or CFP appearances
  • 1-4 bowl record
  • best road win is vs #20 Northwestern
  • 0-15 as an underdog

this is what we have to show for $7.5 million a year???  I'm done with this ass clown.

Hope you slept off your anger induced drunk...  JR was defending a roster that isn't nearly as bad as people are saying.  The roster isn't the issue - the coaching is.  As a player, you cannot look good, or even fast, if you don't know what you're doing and are not put into position to succeed.

Urban isn’t coaching again, IMHO. I’d bet my infinitesimal monthly salary on it. So forget that one. Why should he? He’s a successful restaurant owner(even though this is not a good time to be one.), has real, serious health issues and he’s making $ on Fox Sports and the B1G Network. That’s much less stress than HC. And the Meyer’s don’t want to move again, from what I understand. They’ve been all over the country.

My advice is to go hard after Luke Fickell. He’d coach UM for the right price and he scares the hell out of me as a Buckeye fan. He has Cincinnati ranked #8, I think? Schembechler wasn’t a “Michigan Man” initially either. And if UM could lure him away from the Bearcats, he’d be around for a long time. He’s relatively young and he’s not Gary Moeller.

Just my 2 cents and hoping for the “good ‘ol days” when the #1 rivalry in all of sports was a thing.

"serious health issues".  Lmao.  What a dumbass you are. The health issue was a maneuver to get the OSU job. He was at Fla and his agent got word the Tressel boot was coming.  If he didn't claim health, he wouldn't have been able to make the move. So he sits out a year, "rests", and goes to OSU Leaving none the wiser, and avoiding a west va RR outcry from FLA and media.

Harbaugh's teams up until this year have been good. Going into this year he's 47-18 at Michigan. That falls into the category of good. He's Lloyd Carr without wins over Ohio State.

I'm afraid that if Jim Harbaugh, the guy who most looked like he could be the savior of the program, does not work out at Michigan, then who the hell will? I am totally willing to believe that JH has lost heal zeal for coaching, at least at Michigan. You can see it just in his body language. I'm also totally willing to believe that the powers that be really have been pushing him to be someone that he isn't.

I actually feel a little bit bad for him. If JT Barrett would have run two inches shorter on 2016, what would have been the trajectory of his tenure? What if Maryland had converted a 2 point conversion against Ohio State the week before the Michigan game in 2018? Michigan goes to Columbus, loses, but still probably wins the Big Ten Championship game. How would we feel about his program had a couple different things happened (punt return by MSU was a 1 in 1000 chance)?

Mentally, he is probably done at Michigan. He's had some bad luck along the way to be sure and has certainly made his fair share of mistakes. Not developing a QB after what he did with Jake Rudock is the most shocking thing in his tenure. He'll move back to the NFL (Lions!), go back to being himself hopefully, and be successful. Then we'll all be wondering why he was successful at every stop except here.

Up to this year, I would say he had been reasonably successful, winning 8-10 games every year while in a difficult division.  College football happens to be a merciless sport where only four teams get a shot at the national title, which sets the bar brutally high.  It's tough for our program to clear that bar, and agonizing to think that we were right there in 2016.

But this year has been a total collapse.  Yes, we had some untimely Covid losses and have had bad injury luck, but we look absolutely terrible right now in all phases of the game.  It's shocking.

Griffin, please quit making excuses for the guy.

If this happened or that happened  or if this was this way or that was that way...enough of this shit, that's a lot of things that happened....a lot....that was just not good enough.

He needs to go, his tenure has been haphazard, not focused, too many changes with the asst. coaches, recruiting doesn't make sense too often, lack of developing a QB. Guys like Mattison and McCaffrey leaving are just head scratching.

He needs to GTFO asap.

Interesting observation, i.e. that the powers may be have been pushing him to be someone he isn't.

But JH needed to be pushed. Like it or not, Manball is largely dead at the top levels of college football (Wisky being a notable outlier) and even fair to good teams can run spread and RPO effectively. It seems like JH was pushed into bringing in Gattis with the expectation that he'd open it up. And sometimes they DO open it up... until they make a few mistakes and then revert to Manball runs into the line because you don't trust your QB to throw downfield.  I found it real hard to believe that Gattis was calling those off-tackle QB runs.

This in-game waffling prevents the offense from having any identity. Can you say now that you know what a "Michigan offense" looks like and be confident that they are going to run and execute that "Michigan offense", come hell or high water whenever you watch? I suspect the kids can't either. And that's a huge problem. Not having trust in the plan and trust in the coaches leads to confused, tentative, half-assed play.

It seems like this staff doesn't trust its offensive players enough to commit to a consistent plan that the players are capable of executing.  I hope they never tell these kids, "eventually, we're going to put in some more complicated stuff and really open things up."  When the time comes, just put it the wrinkles.

Maybe they shouldn't trust this team to execute all the bells and whistles that can get put in. But it sure seems like other college kids are capable of executing their respective offensive schemes well enough to have an identity.

All this being said, 6 years in, and there really should not be this much of an identity crisis among the coaching staff.

This was embarrassing. A complete coaching no-show. What is going on? It is unfathomable. Harbaugh and crew have lost my support. I hated the RR and Hoke years, and now this is just as bad. WTF is the problem?

Yikes. Michigan was not great last year, but managed to make it work to a "respectable" 9-4 season. Michigan entered tonight's game without last years...

- Top 2 QBs
- Entire starting offensive line
- Top 2 receivers (talent wise at least)
- Top TE
- Starting DEs
- 2/3 of their starting LBs
- 3/4 of their starting secondary (maybe 3/5, depending on how you count Hill)

So, it's not surprising that Michigan didn't win this game. But, getting humiliated and essentially looking like you quit for most of the game is enough to say that there needs to be a change, and it should probably be tomorrow.

We've been hurt pretty badly by COVID and injuries.

But talent isn't everything. Wisconsin doesn't have Michigan's level of talent by recruiting rankings. And a big part of Michigan's talent problem is that talented players keep leaving the team and at some point you have to hold the coach responsible for it.

A loss was expected, even understandable. The disaster just experienced? That's... not excusable.

Wiscy lost some talent to eligibility, covid and injuries, but they still looked like Wisconsin. Technically, they are at a lower talent level as they don't recruit as well as M.  But they have a culture and a development program and can weather the personnel losses and still play well.  I really don't buy player losses as an excuses this year, every team has had to face difficulties this year, it's been 2020.

Much of MSU's team wasn't even recruited by M, had a new coach and much less practice time, yet came together to beat M.  For me, it always comes back to that.  Our team just seems lost.

 Milton looked overwhelmed, though he didn't have much help;

For the second week in a row Milton missed a wide-open TD (Corum this time) when a simple arm punt would have sufficed.  Our running game's not going to get much of a chance when our QB can't complete absolute gimme throws for scores.

Yeah, second-half blowout caveats apply, but McNamara put the ball on the money on every throw on his first drive.  Start him.
