Mohan, my lord, is ready to fall.

William Mohan Has Committed to Michigan Comment Count

Seth June 23rd, 2019 at 10:45 AM

The first of what could be several expected to drop during this weekend’s mega-visit, 3-Star ATH…wait, let me rephrase that…BAD ASS VIPER PROSPECT William Mohan announced his commitment.

Mohan is a Campanile/Brown guy from Brooklyn. This would be confusing to someone trying to create recruiting lists based on the positions as of NCAA 2006, but not to any Michigan fan who watches Hudl.

Gee I wonder what his YMRMFSPA will be.

Explosive, twitchey athlete that looks like he could add another good 30lbs of muscle. This guy would be a safe sleeper bet if he doesn't get the "committed to Michigan bump" to four star. Not that 4 starzzzz matter. This staff has proven that their evaluations of players well surpass any recuiting sites evals. Go Blue!

Obviously sites can identify talent, I never said they couldn't. My main point is that actual college coaches evaluations are better than some journalist's opinion. These sites put too much weight in testing numbers and 7 on 7 tournaments. I think the best way to evaluate a player is film regardless of talent level. Watch the 15 yard runs, not the 60 yard carries where they go untouched. Compair Derrick Green's HS film to Le'veon Bell's. You will see what I mean.

Yes, but the other thing about ratings is they don't factor in fit with a team's system. Some Viper recruits are tweeners to rating services. They'd get ranked higher if they weren't rated as OLBs or safeties. Fullbacks are the clearest example. If most teams featured fullbacks, the ratings for them would go up. Then they would perhaps match the value they have to the teams that utilize them.

Rankings matter only in calculating which school has the top-ranked recruiting class.

Other than that they just tell you what some people think about a prospect's likelihood of success. Those individuals are frequently wrong. Their shortcomings in analytical ability are exacerbated when they allow irrelevant considerations (such as which camps a recruit participated at) to influence their conclusions.

Rankings are also a poor measure of a recruit's likely success at the college level. Because the services think their success will be judged by where a player is drafted they penalize recruits like Mike Hart and Jordan Kovacs.

Rankings are a weak correlation to actual value brought to a college program and the standard distribution model of star rankings is meaningless as they only get 8 out of 32 of their "best guesses" correct.

What does matter are the evaluations and the interviews with the family, if the skill set matches what your team does and he and his family are comfortable with the fit, than you have a winner.

Of course, a lot of these guys are all that and top250.

Assuming his competition isn’t trash, that’s an impressive highlights. It was odd they included a 100% block in the back though lol

Kid looks so fast that half of those teams either missed assignments or didn't even try to block him. I'm also starting to wonder how many other P5 teams have a similar viper/hybrid LB spot that are trying to sell to recruits similar to UM?

Just about everyone. Even Iowa took a LB off the field for a hybrid last year.

Importantly in this recruitment vs Ohio St, now that Mattison is there the Buckeyes are adding a viper position (calling it something else).  Which probably made the M pitch pretty easy, because would you want to learn it from coaches copying it from Don Brown, or from Don Brown himself?

Gonna be some serious competition at Viper in the years to come, and this kid is gonna be right in the middle of it. Obvious comment is obvious, but damn does he like to hit.
