My neighbor from across the hall came over to see if I was okay.

I'll still follow the team…

I'll still follow the team to some degree, but I'm not making it appointment viewing anymore. I'm glad the players are finally starting to get a cut, but otherwise the rapacious commercialization of college football has been strangling my fandom for quite some time. I almost quit watching after the 2021 UM-MSU game because of how painful the viewing experience has become, but then Michigan went on like a 35-2 run and I stuck around to see how it ended.

OMG, that fucking 2017 Penn…

OMG, that fucking 2017 Penn State game. I watched most of it in a bar accompanied by friends who were not sports fans, let alone Michigan football fans, with the sound off. I made them stay and watch with me until it was well and truly over, and then we all went home and played cards and got very drunk.

This feels much nicer.

Maybe name the teams...as…

Maybe name the teams...as well as their rankings?

How are we almost ten years…

How are we almost ten years into Harbaugh's tenure at Michigan and there is apparently no vetting being done on these hires? There is no way a proper check of who this guy is would not have turned up buckets of red flags.

Didn't Dave Brandon do a number on the athletic department's HR team? I recall reading somewhere that Michgan's HR staff used to be quite small until it started to bloat under Brandon and then eventually some senior staff left or were forced out. Very possible that expertise has never been rebuilt or replaced.

I don't necessarily agree…

I don't necessarily agree. If he's one of your starting DTs or playing early in his career, then yeah, that's probably not a good sign. But if he's headed inside and can learn to do one or two things really well, I could see him being a decent rotational/situational player as an upperclassman.

Mo had a cardiac issue that…

Mo had a cardiac issue that freaked teams out, even if he had been examined by multiple medical departments (UM and Harvard, if I recall). He's still probably a steal for a team that needs a solid interior lineman.

I was pretty high on Cade…

I was pretty high on Cade after watching his high school film. He had a very advanced approach for a high school quarterback. My big concern with him is that he wouldn't quite have the tools to pass the QBs in front of him and he'd end up transferring out of the program.

Refs didn't exactly do us…

Refs didn't exactly do us any favors, but Jackson State played hard and kept themselves in the game.

Uhh...no.  The coaching…

Uhh...no.  The coaching shuffle might work out or it might not but bringing in new coaches isn't "rearranging the deck chairs".  That's literally the opposite of the meaning of that phrase.

Not a first time QB coach…

Not a first time QB coach. Was previously the Ravens QB coach

Seconded. Easily the best…

Seconded. Easily the best program we've never played. Home and home night games would be especially cool.

Probably a lesson to be…

Probably a lesson to be learned here: Make sure someone checks that senior film. In fairness, it's not like another elite program swooped in and offered him, but maybe do a more thorough investigation before you cut ties with someone you "discovered"?

This would be an excellent…

This would be an excellent hire for Fisch.  Don Brown's system just doesn't work if he can't match the opposition's talent, but he's still a very good DC.

Watched ASU-UA last night…

Watched ASU-UA last night. Just a brutal game. Arizona barely showed up and Arizona State was playing like it was their super bowl. Hence, 70-7.

Also the problem with…

Also the problem with running players off/burning bridges would still have happened

Which specific players were run off? Which bridges were burnt? And how did this negatively affect the program? Please be specific and cite credible sources.

I mean, Benjamin St. Juste…

I mean, Benjamin St. Juste would be nice to have given our CB issues, but he was a medical retirement when he left. Maybe Aubrey Solomon given our depth issues on the D-Line? But, yeah, if you look at the actual list of people who have left/been processed it is hard to pick out many potential difference makers.

I am disappointed in the…

I am disappointed in the state of the football program, too. I believe the best course of action would be a mutual parting of ways between Harbaugh and Michigan. I don't see a path forward with our current HC that would result in anything better in 2021 than a rebound to the 9-3 stasis that the program has been in (with a few exceptions) since the late Bo years. And that simply isn't going to buy Jim the time or credibility needed to make the needed changes to move beyond that, even if he was capable of doing so. In retrospect, the time for big changes was after 2017, when Harbaugh should have brought in a top flight OC and either moved on from Don Brown or mandated an overhaul of the defense.

All that said..."Bad" "Horrific" "Terrible" "Decimated" "Chaos". You'd think you're talking about the Covid-19 epidemic rather than a college football team. This basically illustrates what an above MGo user said about the wild swings in the attitude among the people here. People spend 8 months a year anticipating the season and then turn into shitty, disappointed girlfriends after anything other than a flawless performance.  Nothing about this season was going to be normal and it took all of two games for people to lose their shit. Complaining about sports is part of the appeal, but my god. I can't imagine what this place is like after the Ohio game. I know better than to even look.

Look, some of your bullet points reflect some very valid criticisms of Michigan's performance with Jim Harbaugh as head coach.  Some are basically irrelevant or completely subjective or make assumptions based on information you almost certainly don't have.  Most of the problems the fanbase have with Harbaugh boil down to an inability to dislodge OSU from the top of the division, with the added insult of getting blown out in the process. Do you really think they'd be more understanding if Michigan was 4-2 against MSU and/or they had an extra win against Wisconsin?

And none of your criticisms are given any kind of context. Attrition is increasing across the board in college football as we enter an era of quasi-free agency where recruits aren't waiting around for three years to be developed. The big four (or five or six) elite football teams continue to force many traditional blueblood programs into a sort of perpetual second tier. Michigan still has structural disadvantages that hamper its ability to compete. I could go on.

Watching crappy, poorly played football sucks. I get it. I hate it too. It's painfully clear that Jim Harbaugh isn't getting us to the promised land.  But I'm not going to pretend like I have all the answers or that every disappointment belongs on a list somewhere.

That's because it's a complicated situation and we still don't have good data about many aspects of the pandemic. The  most immediate concern was about the health care system being overwhelmed by exponential growth.  It's not the only issue to consider.

The late 80s/early-90s Lions drafts were generally pretty solid in the first few rounds, but they didn't much value in the back end of the draft.

So I had respiratory issue…

So I had respiratory issue starting in early February that I really can't decide whether was Covid-19 or not. I'm assuming it wasn't, for the safety of those around me, but I don't think I've ever had an experience like that.  Maybe I should just break the symptoms down for you all:

Pro-Covid-19:

1. It clearly started in the throat. Which is not uncommon for respiratory ailments, but consistent with what we know about the Coronovirus. (and FYI, I had a flu shot this year too)

2. Probably the worst cough I've ever had. Mostly dry and persistent. At one point I coughed so hard I vomited

3. I experienced prolonged shortness of breath. It never got really severe, I was even able to engage in moderate exercise, but it definitely sapped my strength. I have never experienced that outside of the worst days of the flu.

4. I couldn't smell or taste for a prolonged period of time. Like at a certain point, it just seemed to shut off. It was weird.

5. Symptoms started after the virus arrived in the United States. Michigan appears to have been a hotspot so it's not impossible I caught an early case of it.

Anti-Covid-19:

1. The early morning cough was very phlegmy. I spent a good half hour every morning hacking up green stuff

2. I never felt feverish or otherwise hot. Taking my temperature never came to my mind because I assumed I just had a cold or a sinus infection.

3. I had heavy nasal congestion for the last two-thirds of my sickness. That absolutely could have contributed to my lack of smell/taste.

4. The virus appears to have been in very limited circulation in America when I started experiencing my symptoms. I easily could have had a cold or maybe a mild flu.

So...yeah. My default assumption is that I had a nasty upper respiratory tract infection, but the symptoms I experienced were strange.  I was basically sick for a full month, which is longer than I have ever been sick from a cold or flu.  Three years ago, I caught a flu bug that knocked me on my ass, but the whole thing was over, beginning to end, in 10 days.

Oh jeez man. I'm sorry to…

Oh jeez man. I'm sorry to hear that. Sucks to get sick like that at anytime but particularly now. I was a heavy smoker/drinker for years so it kinda hits home. Thoughts and prayers with you and your family.

They could literally do the whole thing online. And all the draft and scouting pros have nothing better to do than review tape at this point anyhow. If there's one sporting event that shouldn't be affected by the pandemic, it's the NFL draft.

Nah, dude, you just got called out and now you're backing away. Either come with your list and just concede you were talking out your ass.

Or, say, Michigan having…

Or, say, Michigan having only 2 OL recruits in the 2018 class. It looks like both Mayfield and Hayes will be hits, and that's great, but we'd have been in rough shape if one or both of them had been a bust. Or all the safeties in the 2020 class. They all look to be good recruits, and yes, there are also opportunities at Viper and LB but that's putting a lot of eggs in one positional basket. Particularly when one of our CB recruits in the class may have his highest upside at safety, too.

Washington is one of those…

Washington is one of those players that was just too good to keep. He was a converted QB in the H.S. Class of 2015 and got passed by David Long and Lavert Hill, both true CBs, who were in the next class. I'm sure a fresh start at a new school seemed preferable to fighting Brandon Watson and Ambry Thomas for snaps and hoping that you'd get a crack at a starting job.

Fleck to USC makes a certain…

Fleck to USC makes a certain amount of sense. He'd have a fertile recruiting base, the resources to hire good assistant coaches, and no elite program blocking his path. A CEO-type coach like Fleck could be a good fit there.

I feel like Nebraska's days…

I feel like Nebraska's days as an elite program are over. They have a great history and a loyal fan base, but I don't think they have what it takes to compete in modern college football.
