Tight End Recruiting: Dust Settling Soon?

The recruitment of top-100 NY TE Jeremy Ruckert, a newly minted five-star on 247 after a stellar performance at The Opening, is nearing a conclusion:

Ohio State has long been the presumed leader, followed by Michigan and then the rest of the pack, and while Ruckert's been quiet about his recruitment it looks like that remains the case. Wolverine247's Isaiah Hole expects Ruckert to choose the Buckeyes after a source who'd held out hope for Michigan's chances got pessimistic:

However, speaking to the same source after Ruckert announced his decision date, that optimism had faded quite significantly. The source told Wolverine247 that Michigan hasn't made the type of gains they would have liked in recent weeks.

Unless something changes between now and Ruckert's decision date in a week and a half, all signs are now pointing to Ohio State being the choice -- they currently lead with 100% of the 247Sports Crystal Ball.

Losing Ruckert to OSU would stink, no question. Michigan still has a lot to like about their tight end recruiting, however. Four-star TX TE Mustapha Muhammad remains one of the better bets to end up in the class—Michigan owns all 23 picks on his crystal ball. Top-100 IL TE Luke Ford, meanwhile, just set up a visit for July 22nd, and 247's Steve Wiltfong thinks the Wolverines could make a big move:

Alabama and Georgia lead here but this Michigan visit I think can flip the script on the whole thing being a Midwest school that really features the TE. I expect Ford and his family to really hit it off with Coach Harbaugh and his staff and the rest of the people in town.

With the visit occurring a week ahead of the BBQ at the Big House, the coaches will be able to give Ford and family plenty of attention.

2018 Updates: "Dream School" For Addison

Following up on a note from last week's roundup: four-star CA ATH Bryan Addison told TMI's Josh Newkirk that Michigan is now in his top group:

Addison admits he grew up a fan of Michigan, UCLA and USC, so the offer form the Wolverines happened to be a “dream” scenario for him. He says now that he holds an offer from the Wolverines, he has added them to his top tier of offered schools.

“I’ve always wanted to play for Michigan since I was younger,” Addison said. “Playing for Michigan has just been a dream for me."

He added that he's planning to head to Ann Arbor on an official visit. So far UCLA has pursued Addison, who could be a wideout or defensive back, while USC hasn't made him a priority. If that stays the case, Michigan should have a legitimate shot. He isn't planning to make a decision until signing day.

Another California four-star, safety Julius Irvin, is preparing to narrow his list to five. Based on this article from Scout's Blair Angulo, it appears a couple Midwest schools will make the cut alongside USC, UCLA, and Washington:

Two others that appear to be in great shape to earn official visits during the season are Michigan and Notre Dame.

"I'm planning to take all my five officials and making my decision around my birthday in October," Irvin said. "I want to go out east since it's farther away.

"I've never been out to the Midwest so I'm just looking to see how the culture fits me. It's a lot different than out here. Distance does not matter. I talk to Notre Dame and Michigan a lot. I'm in contact with coach (Brian) Polian and at Michigan it's coach (Brian) Smith. They've both been reaching out to me every week and just keeping in touch."

That's far from the only only M-ND battle. Four-star NJ OLB Shayne Simon, who said last week that the Wolverines and Irish are "neck and neck" at the top of his list, plans to make a decision in the near future, per Sam Webb:

“Probably before the season,” said Simon specifying his timeline.

If he can’t settle on a choice within that timeframe he plans to take visits in the fall. At this point, though, all signs point to him reaching a decision in the next few months. The question of who leads as Simon enters the home stretch is the subject of great debate. His connections to Notre Dame (teammates Justin and Jayson Ademilola are committed to the Irish and former teammate Brandon Wimbush is slated to be ND’s starting quarterback) have long been cited as lures to South Bend.  His connections to Michigan… his mother and aunt are alums… have been well documented.

Ohio State is hanging around, but this looks like a two-team race, one that could easily go either way.

Top-100 GA WR Kearis Jackson set a commitment date for August 19th and told 247's Rusty Mansell it's "going to come down to either Georgia or Auburn. Despite that, Michigan may still get a shot at a later flip:

Even though he will make a decision there could be some official visits coming in the fall to others schools not currently mentioned as much in the mix for the four-star WR.

“Notre Dame, Ohio State and Michigan are some schools that may get officials at the end of September or sometime in the fall,” he said.

It's safe to file him under "longshot."

247 updated their 2018 Top247; none of Michigan's commits moved more than a handful of spots one way or the other.

2019 Updates: Trinity Trio To Visit

Five-star 2019 OH DE Zach Harrison visited Michigan for the second time last month, hitting it off with Greg Mattison and Jim Harbaugh. He told Sam Webb he's looking to see more of the program:

For now, Harrison publicly considers all his suitors to be equals. If Michigan is to rise to the fore it will to build upon the comfort that was established during his last visit.

“I still need to find out a lot because I’ve only been there twice,” he said. “I just need to get there more often.”

Doing so is in the plans for Harrison.

While Harbaugh hasn't had much success prying top Ohio prospects away from the Buckeyes, OSU doesn't have their usual fandom advantage with Harrison, who's originally from Chicago.

Four-star quarterback Michael Johnson Jr., Michigan's latest offer recipient at the position, was the subject of attention when Harbaugh hired his father, who shortly thereafter accepted a position coach job at Oregon. The younger Johnson told The Wolverine's Austin Fox that won't play into his decision:

With his father on the Oregon staff, one might think the Ducks would be the team to beat for Johnson Jr.’s services, but he insisted that’s not the case.

“Honestly, it doesn’t give them an advantage at all,” he said.

Meanwhile, Michigan will host several top 2019 prospects this month. Three four-star recruits from St. Louis—top-50 ATH Isaiah Williams, top-100 WR Marcus Washington, and top-150 OLB Shammond Cooper—will see Ann Arbor as part of a four-school tour that also includes Alabama, Ohio State, and, uh, Illinois, per 247's Steve Wiltfong. Another top-100 prospect, FL OT William Putnam, informed Steve Lorenz he'll visit on July 26th with his parents in tow.

Seeing past OSU TEs get drafted and having the opportunity to make the CFP relatively frequently.  It's not like high school students necessarily have a ton of foresight.  Their thought process is will I have an opprtunity to play for a championship, will I get drafted and do I like the staff and future teammates.  It's not a tough decision.

If their goal is to play in the NFL, which I would suspect most 4 star recruits and all 5 star recruits do, then what their stats look like is important to that goal. Titles are nice but NFL GM's wanna see you catch the ball. If you're a TE and you want to make coin in the NFL you're lookin at players like Gronk or Graham. The type of TE who's game is more about receiving than blocking. OSU is not a place where you're going to show that.

I'm not trying to suggest these players only focus on stats, demand PT and be cancerous prima donna's. I would, however, think that you want to at least choose a system where you know if you work hard you're going to get what you need to be successful at the next level.

The problem is, I think these kids get caught up in the eye candy of rings and trophies. If they choose the right school that has shown a track record of focus on their position and putting talent into the NFL then the rest will happen.

That's not exactly the way kids think. I imagine a lot of these star recruits think that it doesn't matter how they get to the NFL, but once they get there they will stay in the league and things will sort them out. Therefore the OSU pitch of We can get you a shot in the NFL becomes much more meaningful when you combine it with recent CFB Playoff appearances.

You're probably right they don't think it's all that important. They're more focused on winning and the trappiings of success.

However I would suggest that the difference between a TE that had 600 receptions per year on a team that won 10-11 games in their last two years with a Bowl win and the same TE with 300 receptions per year on a team that won 10-11 games over the same time period and won a NCG could be a the difference between going in the first or second round of the draft.

I'm sure I don't have to tell you that means millions of dollars.

recruiting him personally. First, Urban is an incredibly gifted recruiter - he can sell ice to Eskimos. He has proven this for years and actually exceeds JH in this realm. Don't like it, but it's true. Above board? Who knows. Second, Urban realizes Ruckert at UM could be devastating. He doesn't really need Ruckert, but he cannot let JH have this weapon. So he's playing every card without a doubt in this process.

Taking the top 3 kids from any state is amazing, even more so when it's from a state not typically in our wheelhouse (footprint?). I don't have vast knowledge on historically great M players from Missouri, but getting all three (or even 2/3) here should add to that list after all is said and done.

It's amazing that top-rated QBs and TEs continue to destroy their careers by attending OSU.  I guess the track record is just irrelevant to these kids.

Our presumed starting TE just got put on the Mackey watch list, and he only has 8 more catches in college than these recruits. Maybe that's a something?

But I kind of like the idea of a Ford excelling at football for Mich. Tell Luke's mom he'll be president.

kearis jackson saying hes likely to commit soon and then take official visits to m, nd, osu, etc...why the heck not?!

i realize some know where they want to go and dont feel the need for officials or maybe scheduling conflicts (games, practice, school, testing, etc) prevent visits or make it difficult...but even prospects with the firmest of early verbals should try to take as many visits as possible.  officials are free and carry very little downside as they allow prospects to travel, gain new experiences, tour new cities and schools, meet new people, etc...they also help to confirm ones verbal, add further data to the equation, or awaken a prospect to new realization.  not to mention theyre just plain fun.  if nothing else, most prospects are huge football fans and officials allow them to take in 5 great games / atmospheres.

he obviously had his methods which included prospects knowingly (for most part) pledging early to reserve class spots in exchange for forgoing visits and it seemed to work ok but i still disagreed with hokes visit policy (though far from my only disagreement).  i wasnt a big time prospect nor did i have to consider social media, reporters / bloggers, etc or deal with tons of intense fans but id advise most anyone (other than those truly sick of recruiting process) to arrange and enjoy their visits.  great to see kids take advantage of a fairly unique experience

There are a ton of Illinois alumni in the St. Louis area, and it is not too far from Champaign (only about 45 minutes farther away then Columbia, MO, where the University of Missouri is).  It could be that they are related to/friends with someone who went there, the high school coaches could have ties to Illinois, etc.

It's obvious. Lovie! He's a good guy, maybe a bit boring but a guy I can see parents wanting their sons to play for. As both a Illinois (undergrad) and Michigan (law) fan I'm always like hey leave the poor Illini alone. Just focus on the hated Buckeyes. My football Saturdays are usually a combination of awesome (Michigan) and oh shit (Illinois)!

in the 3rd round in consectutive years.  To say we don't use them is inaccurate, we prepare them for the league by teaching them how to block and occasionally using them to open up the field.

A healthy Jake Butt might have been a 3rd rounder with a huge knock on his blocking ability by every draft expert.  And since I'm too lazy to look it up can someone list the last NFL caliber TE that Michigan churned out?  I had Jay Riemersma on my fantasy team like 10 years ago and he's the only one that comes to mind.

Benny Joppru is the only "NFL Caliber TE" I can think of since then. Funchess is a WR. I think the point lots of folks are alluding to is that M uses the TE heavily as a blocker and pass catcher. A lot of the time M utilizes multiple TEs in one formation and they are a focal point of the offense. You'd think it'd be a TEs dream to be in an offense that plays 3 at a time.

2018 so far looks solid but a little underwhelming if you are looking at recruiting rankings.

So far we have verbals from 7 4-Stars (Ekiyor, Sims, Reese, Milton, Hutchinson, Hayes, Mayfield). Highest ranked in the 24/7 composite is 109.

We are the crystal ball leaders for these 3 4-stars: Friday, McGrone, Muhammad. Highest ranked there is 65.

The only other 4-star we have any crystal ball votes is Simon.

Doesn't appear we are in play for a single 5-star with the possible exception of St. Brown who seems like a long shot (Ruckert is still a 4-star on the 24/7 composite and 100% of his CBs are for OSU).

Still a long way to go so we'll see how things play out.

It's a small-ish class, and Michigan is swinging for the fences with national recruits. You have to wait it out with elite kids from California, Florida, Texas, etc. Those aren't the kids who fall in love with Michigan and commit a year or two early.

Mr. Yost

July 14th, 2017 at 2:54 PM ^

I understand...but it's still disappointing to swing and miss.

We compare ourselves to the Buckeyes and in recent history even with a small class they're destroying the country in average recruiting rankings and in the top 5 with 5 less recruits. USC does it as well when they have small classes.

I get it, we're not there yet (or located in SoCal)...but that doesn't mean we can't feel some kinda way about it.

in a program where he is the star TE. Our tendency to have multiple TE sets and a rotation probably doesn't appeal to his ego. TEs are a bit like QBs in that regard. He wants the limelight which is written all over his recruiting approach with this fake top 4 list looking all splashy in his tweets. He loves to post pictures of himself looking buff. Not really a Harbaugh kind of guy in my opinion.

Just a bit of inductive reasoning given a quick review of his recruiting hype and twitter page. Just a tad narcasitic for an 18 year old lad who is tooling the other 3 teams on his top 4 list. Looks like his graphics are produced by a professional spin doctor, which is likely the PR guy on OSU's staff. Of course, unless he has his own PR and graphics staff at home.

With other NJ recruits there has been a lot of commentary about their friendship with each other. It seemed like Rashan Gary , Ahmir Mitchell and Brad Hawkins all knew each other. I'm surprised to see nothing about Simon's links to current Wolverines.

Recruiting is fundamentally comfort and relationships. Period. There are certain thresholds a school must meet, but between comparable programs, it's about the relationship with the staff. Michigan and Ohio State are comparable with each having plusses and minuses. The thing that wins a recruit is their comfort level with the HC and staff. Some recruits will prefer JH and others  UFM. Now, sometimes they backfill the reason they picked a school (I loved their business program! or great facilities! or love they way they use their WDEs!), but that's almost always post hoc bs.

Ruckert likes OSU better and is almost certainly basing his decision on that. He's not going through some sort of complicated weighted checklist assessment to robotically figure out which school is "best" for him. It's personal. Make your peace with that.
