That sounds good! Oh. This tweet has a very Ben Mason twist in it:

Literally screaming at people is probably not as good as having an explosive first step. Mason's dalliance at three-tech is a wee bit alarming since he's listed at 254 on the roster. While that's not updated, there's no way he's able to get to reasonable DT weight in a year. It's going to be a rough year at DT.

Harbaugh's having a presser right now in which he's detailing various position groups, and there's an open practice Saturday.

This actually sounds good. Gattis offering glimpses into Michigan practices and his approach to routes:

At the very least he should be a top-tier WR coach, and the idea of a guy who cut his teeth under Joe Moorhead getting Patterson, Black, Collins, and DPJ… could be good.

There's a real easy explanation. Insane article from Dennis Dodd in which a suit working at Virginia Tech looks at college football's attendance problem and concludes that facepaint is the solution:

"I wasn't an athlete. For me, at least, the fundamental [way] how you run an event is the way KISS runs a show."

Wurthman went to describe the anticipation built by the band's introduction hype video on the jumbotron -- KISS walking from dressing room to stage -- and the same old songs that are the foundation of classic rock radio.

Yeah, they rock the house. They could also lead a morning athletic department staff meeting.

"It is," Wurthman concluded, "quintessential sports marketing."

The article is full of people dancing around the real issue, because they are prohibited from realizing what the real issue is. USF's AD:

"The reality is that the national attendance numbers are going to continue to go down," Bulls AD Mike Kelly said, "mainly due to the comparative social and leisure experiences that can now be had outside the football stadium even if those experiences still center around the game itself."

Read that again. This is USF's athletic director saying attendance is going to go down because the in-stadium experience sucks. That's the problem. If a KISS concert had six commercial breaks in its first half hour, people would stop going to KISS concerts.

[After THE JUMP: NBA draft items]

The latest from Draft Express. They've updated their draft risers and fallers. Both Poole and Iggy draw mention. Poole's ranked 64th:

…intriguing long-term projection, but he showed why he's still far away from being able to help an NBA team [against Texas Tech]. His decision-making often leaves much to be desired. He's contact-averse and could stand to add more ways to impact the game when his shot isn't falling. …could use another year of high-level experience at Michigan to maximize his draft stock.

Should Poole opt to enter the draft he without question will garner workout interest and would likely hear his name called, but one more year of seasoning at Michigan would serve him well. -- Schmitz

Iggy is barely inside their 100 at 88:

…could certainly hear his name called in the back end of the second round with a strong pre-draft process, but questions still remain about how the 20-year-old Brazdekis moves the needle on an NBA floor. His confidence, aggressiveness and ambidexterity as a straight-line driver are certainly positives, but he'll need to become a much more consistent shooter (career 32.2 percent from 3 on 410 attempts) and more adept passer to make up for his lack of length (6-8 wingspan) and foot speed on the defensive end of the floor. -- Schmitz

Those numbers from three apparently include high school attempts, which were much more likely to be bad off the dribble shots than his threes at Michigan. DX may be underrating Iggy a bit based on that.

So it's status quo: draft folks think both should return if they want to maximize their draft stock. If either wants to go they may go in the second round. There is of course a chance of that.

Matthews is 67th, so they project that he'll get drafted if a reasonable number of underclassmen in front of him return to school.

Speaking of that chance. Uh. Not great when random assholes are drawing this kind of response:

image

The decision here may not be based entirely on draft status.

Related to said chance. Jeff Goodman's transfer tracker has a few grad transfers mentioning Michigan as a possible destination. They are:

  • Daniel Utomi, wing, Akron. 6'6", 22% usage, Just A Shooter profile. Hit 37% from 3 on 232 attempts.
  • Dazon Ingram, guard, Alabama. 6'5", 20% usage, 22 assist rate, 26 TO rate, shooting 48/38. Big FT rate.
  • Justin Pierce, wing, William & Mary. 6'7", 25% usage, 24 assist rate, shot 55/33.
  • Jahaad Proctor, guard, High Point. 28% usage, 22 assist rate, low TO rate, shot 53/33.

None of these guys are particularly exciting. That Michigan has reached out to a number of grad transfers says at least a little something about the roster's stability, or lack thereof.

Michigan hockey… summer? Will Lockwood will return:

That's a big deal for a team that struggled to score. Lockwood led Michigan forwards with 31 points in 36 games. He was also +8, which led all forwards. Michigan is still waiting on Luke Martin, Josh Norris, and Nick Pastujov. It is a good sign that none of the three have already signed. Frequently you'll see teams sign guys and stick them in the AHL immediately. Norris's injury does mean that his failure to sign yet is less encouraging than the other two guys.

Etc.: Remembering Charles Matthews. Strangely fascinating article about illegal sports streaming. Pomeroy on yelling at people in public. One time I went to the Old Country Buffet in town because my girlfriend insisted and we saw one of our professors there with a woman who seemed uncomfortably like a mail-order bride anyway buffets aren't really a thing much anymore.

Stadium attendance? We talking 'bout stadium attendance?!? News flash: They don't actually care. There is much more money being made from TV contracts than from people going to the games.

They should care, though.  Many of the people watching at home were at one point students in the stands that religiously attended or young kids with their parents that became indoctrinated at the altar.

If people don't even want to come to the "church" of Michigan Football because the experience is bad, they won't be as faithful in terms of viewing.

Nah, this is not true.  If it were true, AD's would already do what Jonesy says they should: slash ticket prices way back and use the actual game attendance as a loss leader.

Every home game represents millions in revenue.  Michigan makes close to $10 million a game on ticket revenue alone, and that number surely goes well above $10 million after all the peripherals.  Even a school that doesn't seat 100,000 still makes millions.  After you divide up the TV pie among all the schools that get a slice, the home games still stand out, big-time.

Not to mention the fact that everyone gets the same slice of TV pie, so they need the home-game revenue to try and stand out from the pack.

I remember that Old Country Buffet at the Oak Valley shopping colonnade or whatever the hell it was called. One of the most depressing places in Ann Arbor.

People coughing all over the food and little kids touching everything didn't stop me from getting seconds of the fried chicken.

Nothing revolutionary here, and been touched several times above, but the costs and the f@#%ing red hat are killers.  Warning:  old man musings about to commence . . . when I got my first student tickets at UM-F in 1989 I paid $10 per game.  Booze was super easy to sneak in.  Now I'm paying, with seating license extortion, $1300 for a pair of tickets.  And they begrudge me bringing water.  I get prices go up, that's way of the world, but in 30 years my pair of tickets has gone from $120 to $1300.  An order of magnitude.  And if I take my two kids now, get 3 Cokes, dogs, and pretzel or two, I'm down almost another $50.  And the red hat, to hell with him.  I don't mind for a second a 3 1/2 hour game, if that is driven by college football timing rules resulting in more plays, not driven by countless commercials.

I guess the extended success of the basketball team the last three plus years pushes fans to expect every player to develop into Caris, Trey, or Stauskus by their sophomore plus year.

Interesting times when so many people are excited/anxious over whether a kid will return for his 2nd or 3rd year of what is nominally a 4-year degree program.

It's always interesting to me because JB' s coaching is much greater than his recruiting. He recruits players ideally for 3-4 years and they leave after 2, where most of them play their major minutes in year 2. Essentially he gets one good year out of them most of the time. I think that's what causes angst amongst fans.

Souplantation is what I miss most about living in southern California!

I'm not really a buffet guy per se, but salad is precisely the kind of food I'd never take the time to make myself. So having an array of healthy green options at the ready was a godsend. It's no coincidence I've gained 20 pounds since moving to Minnesota, where vegetables are a foreign concept and the long winters turn everyone into problem drinkers.

Regarding the less-than-ideal DT situation ...

Remember that a year ago we were all freaking out over the OFFENSIVE tackle situation. And the year before that it was our depleted defense, especially the secondary.

I am not saying everything will fine. I am saying everything COULD be ... okay.

Two years ago when our entire defense left we were terrified of what our defense would look like and Zordich complained about his corners at every opportunity. Then the whole defense came from obscurity (at best) into all B1G/all american/Nfl prospect. Long and Hill came out of nowhere to be lock down corners. Devin Bush went from why the hell did we take him over the guy who went to Florida into a missile. Chase went from linebacker turned tight end turned sack monster defensive end. We were worried about safety and then they were virtually the same as the guys they replaced. We were woried about viper and we got khaleke.

In short, it all worked out wonderfully and we had a top 10 defense of all first year players.

Ben Mason getting any run at 3T in any capacity should be a loud alarm bell in the same way as Nolan Uilizio securing a starting tackle spot or any number of defensive position switches in the Richrod years was.

You say mason cannot put on the weight fast enough this season....i would think he could add 20lbs with that frame of his...that's at 289 lbs.  Serviceable... I wouldn't bet against it.

And what's the word on Livers? Is he gonna play football?

Ben Mason benches 400lbs and squats 700lbs. There isn't an OG in American that can stop that guy given his 4.8 speed and strength.  Excited to see Ben stretch to be the next Mo Hurst.

According to a spreadsheet I have of this, the major leap in Michigan football ticket prices (not accounting for seat licenses) was 2000-2001 when it went from $35 a game for six games to $50 a game for six games.  From that point forward, accounting for inflation, it's been the rough equivalent of $70 a game (excepting 2008-2010, when prices held fast during the recession and it went down to about $60 a game.)

Also, I am confused about Chi Chi's being lumped into the buffet category.

"That's the problem. If a KISS concert had six commercial breaks in its first half hour, people would stop going to KISS concerts."

So we have to ask why there are so many interminable breaks. Oh yeah, money. More money. And MOAR MONEY.

If you really want to ruin something entertaining pile lots and lots of money into it. Want a world of college football where more teams are competitive and the games are fun to watch? Remove about 75% of the cash flow from the machine.

College football was plenty of fun in the 70s and 80s, before the biggering of TV contracts, coach salaries, cheating, luxury boxes, luxury practice facilities, etc. Kids came to colleges, got a good, free education, and the best of them went on to the NFL, just like now. But with way, way less bad stuff (our collective lack of understanding of CTE excepted).

the lesson, as always - don't be a dick to the players, not least because they're just freaking kids but also because there's a likelihood that most of them are either listening, or they know someone who is.
