Seven Florida Players Suspended For Opener Comment Count

Florida has had some offseason problems unrelated to shark-humping, and lo the many are suspended:

Those players are:

  • WR Antonio Callaway: junior who led Florida in receiving last year with 721 yards; next closest guy under 400.
  • DE Keivonnis Davis: junior backup with about 30 tackles last year.
  • DT Richard Desir-Jones: moved from OL last year and may be a depth contributor.
  • LBs James Houston and Ventrell Miller, DE Jordan Smith, OT Kadeem Telfort: freshmen who probably wouldn't have gotten on the field anyway.

Callaway is kind of a big deal but nobody else was likely to be relevant except maybe Davis.

I can't believe an SEC school actually handed out this kind of punishment. As soon as I heard what the players did, I figured it was automatic their punishment would come in game two against Northern Colorado.

Some have suggested the details may have necessitated suspension because it's an NCAA violation.  If it were just theft it would be buisiness as usual in the SEC.  But this was part of their scholarship money so the NCAA could suspend for this.

If it's actually true they were trying to cover this up, that would be an even bigger NCAA violation though I doubt they could prove it.

From perusing r/cfb, looks like they are pretty deep at WR. It's a big loss, but probably won't have a major impact on the game.

Is by far their most productive WR on a team breaking in a new QB...oh, and he's also a return specialist. Don't be fooled - this definitely hurts Florida's chances to win.

They feared some bigger losses and were relieved. You can say they're wrong but obviously it's worse to lose a good or solid player when the replacement options are terrible than to lose a very good player with good replacement options. Either way, I'm just relaying their sentiments.

So seven guys who could probably be charged with grand theft ($300 or more in FL), conspiracy and fraud are going to miss a football game? And it's fine the coach wanted to keep that quiet because gamesmanship? I don't want this harebrained scheme to ruin anyone's life but this whole thing reeks of SEC athlete entitlement.

The punishment would likely max out at Callaway not being allowed to wear his headphones on the team bus for 10 minutes.

Props to McElwain for having the balls to suspend guys for a marquee game.

A backup DE in 2016 who had 30 tackles seems like a decent loss to me. For a comparison Charlton had 40 tackles last yr, Wormley had 36 and Chase had 32. A backup DE with 30 tackles is a pretty productive player.

This is too bad in every way. This is an athletic contest. As such, you hope both teams are competing at full strength...that should be the spirit in play...the mindless partisans not withstanding.

Seven guys are seven guys, even if none of them are starters. That still creates additional depth concerns.

Losing Callaway will really hurt their offense though, and takes a huge burden off of Michigan's inexperienced secondary. They don't even know who their starting QB is yet, and now whoever that guy is, he has one less weapon to work with. Really Florida's only solid offensive weapon.

I'm expecting Brown to dial up pressure on the QB even more now.
