Brian

Part thirteen of the all-singing all-dancing season preview. Previously: The Story, 2009, quarterbacks, tailbacks, receivers, offensive line, secondary, linebackers, defensive line, special teams, offensive overview and predictions, defensive overview and predictions, and putting it on the record.

This lives in glorious 720p if you've got the horsepower. Enjoy it in glorious 720p. Or enjoy it below. Paul did it.

[Update: Song is "A Better Son/Daughter" by Rilo Kiley. Album.]

A. Watch it. (If you watched it, go to D. Otherwise, go to B.)

-------------------

B. I told you to watch it. This is not optional. (If you watched it, go to D. Otherwise go to C.)

-------------------

C. I hate you so much. You don't win the World Series and are eaten by a dinosaur.

-------------------

D. It's pretty weird being a Michigan fan right now. Winningest program, relatively recent national title, six-of-seven losing streak against Blood Rival, 40 year bowl streak just broken, some guy who tells USA Today he "grew up in a holler," by which he means a dirt road, and "is the same guy [he's] always been" in charge of the whole broken enterprise. I don't think any of us expected to ever be here.

I told Paul I wanted a hype video along the lines that you saw above—unless of course you are currently inside the digestive track of a dinosaur, in which case what sort of wifi do you have?—and he was skeptical. "I've never put highlights to a waltz," he said. I told the girlfriend I told Paul I wanted a hype video along the lines above and she was incredulous. "But it's desperate and sad," she said. I was kind of like yeah… and? And then also I was kind of like "in desperation there's that shred of hope; people who are down and not desperate are resigned. I could be ignorant or desperate." Actually I didn't say that, I said something along the lines of "hi, I'm a Michigan fan, nice to meet you."

-------------------

E. By this point, I think Rich Rodriguez and the fan collective understand each other pretty good. Maybe we wanted people to conform to our idea of a "Michigan Man," but it turns out things just move towards an asymptote from opposite directions. Here we are on opposite sides of an unbridgeable gap, so close we can reach out our hands and touch.

I said earlier this week in The Story that last year was hard and apathetic. It's still hard, but goddammit I want Michigan to win.

--------------------

F. Football!

--------------------

G. I need a nap and a drink.

I started to break down around the 4:00 mark I think. I heard the music but I was trying not to listen. That was one of the sadest and best videos I have ever watched. It was truly painful. It's just like Barwis, or an alcoholic...you have to hit rock bottom, torn down to your very core, before you can be built back up and be the best you can be. In 2008 we hit rock bottom. We have seen what we became and we shed the ugly, arrogant, 'we're better than everyone else" BS. Now through the shear pain of it all, and watching that video was painful, Michigan is building a new foundation and I believe if given the chance Rich Rodriguez is going to msake us very proud to be Michigan Wolverine fans.

That was hard to watch at first, but then it took a great turn. I must have got something in my eye while watching the video. Started tearing up a bit. I wanna see Michigan be really fuckin' on tomorrow.

I for one am sorry about killing your servers for the past two weeks. Great job guys, keep up the good work. If I see anything on ESPN et. al. mentioning Michigan, I will check here first for real, actual, informational news. And, if Brian declares that space monsters have eaten Angell Hall, I'll be on the first plane back with ray-gun in hand to fight off the attacking hordes. Somebody get this to the team, preferably right before kickoff. Go Blue!

I love the choice of song, especially since any use of Explosions in the Sky would have meant watching nine minutes of last season over again and I am pretty sure that would have been mildly unhealthy, to say the least. Besides, we can expect that if things go poorly tomorrow, the MGoCrew will logically follow this up with "Portions for Foxes" if only for the line: "Cause you're just damage control for a walking corpse like me - like you." Let's just hope it does not come to that. Seriously. Go Blue!

First the never-ending series of indepth previews and now this video? Awesome. (Hey, wasn't there something about a newspaper article? I can't seem to remember it anymore.) Now, if you will excuse me, I have to get dressed for tomorrow's game and sit in my car waiting until it is time to leave. My gaze will be fixed straight ahead while this video plays in my mind. I will not blink. I will not sleep. I will just repeatedly look at the clock and count down the hours. (Well, the clock part is pretty much true.) GO BLUE!

Thanks Paul. My prediction for tomorrow: Michigan leads narrowly at the half. Coach Rod scares the daylights out of them in the locker room, Michigan wakes up, ends up winning by 20. UM 41 WMU 21

"By this point, I think Rich Rodriguez and the fan collective understand each other pretty good." Nice, hopefully your use of "good" is a subtle West Virginia joke.

Obviously Brian's video has been up for awhile now, and I was late to the party... in fact I was just able to check it out now from home. But after watching that clip, I must say, in bold, and in caps: BRING ON THE WESTERN MICHIGAN BRONCOS!! BRING ON ALL THE NAYSAYERS AND ALL THE ROSENBERGS AND ALL THE MEMBERS OF THE MEDIA WHO LISTENS TO THE LIES LONG AFTER THE LIAR HAS SHUT HIS MOUTH!! BRING ON ALL THE BIG TEN GROUCHES WHO HAVE BEEN WAITING FORTY YEARS TO GIVE ALL THE CRAP THEY'VE GIVEN US SINCE LAST SEASON! BRING ON DANTONIO! BRING ON THE QUITTERS AND WHINERS WHO DIDN'T WANT TO WORK OR MAKE THE MOST OF THEIR MIND, BODY AND SOUL FOR THE HONOR AND GLORY OF MICHIGAN! BRING ON THE BANDWAGON BUCKSTACHES WHO MAKE SNIDE REMARKS AT ME IN HOME DEPOT BECAUSE OF LAST YEAR!! BRING ON THE FRUSTRATION THAT I HAS LINGERED WITH ME SINCE LAST NOVEMBER!! BRING ON THE DOUBTERS OF A YOUNG MAN WEARING THE NUMBER FIVE WHO WILL HAVE MY SUPPORT REGARDLESS OF HIS FINAL STATS AT THE END OF THE GAME! BRING ON THE PREVIOUS TENDENCIES OF STEVIE BROWN! BRING ON THE QUESTIONABLE HEALTH OF BRANDON MINOR!! BRING ON THE DOUBTERS OF COACH ROD! BRING ON THE PUNK KIDS IN RHETT'S CLASS FOR TEASING HIM ABOUT ALL THE NONSENSE HIS DAD HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH! BRING ON THE SKEPTICISM OF DAVE RESVINE!! BRING ON ALL THE THINGS THAT MAKE OUR ENEMIES THINK IT IS SAFE NOT TO FEAR US!! BRING ON THE ACCUSATIONS OF A WEAK SECONDARY!! BRING ON THE SUPERSTITIONS OF THE BLUE-HAIRS! BRING ON THE BASTARDS AROUND HERE WHO KEEP ASKING FOR A DAMN MAIZE JERSEY DURING A NIGHT GAME! BRING ON POGUES! BRING ON THE DETROIT FREE PRESS FOR SELLING RICH'S SOUL TO KEEP THEIR DIRTY RAG IN BUSINESS! BRING ON JIM TRESSEL, WELL, BECAUSE HE'S JIM TRESSEL! BRING ON THE ANGEL OF DEATH FOR DARING TO TAKE BO AWAY FROM US! BRING ON NOVEMBER 21, 2009! BRING ON ABC AND ESPN BECAUSE THEY'RE SURE TO GIVE US A SECOND-RATE ANNOUNCER TOMORROW! BRING ON THE WHALE AND HIS OVERHYPED TEAM FROM SOUTH BEND!! BRING ON THE CONFERENCE SCHEDULE!! BRING IT ALL ON!! AND BRING ON THE WESTERN MICHIGAN BRONCOS TOMORROW, BECAUSE THEY ARE THE FIRST WHO DARE TO STAND IN OUR WAY! AND WHEN IT ALL RAISES ITS UGLY HEAD BEFORE US, WE WILL STAND UP AND SUPPORT THIS TEAM!! WE WILL STAND TALL AND SURE WITH THE PRIDE OF OUR HISTORIC PAST AND THE HOPE OF A NEW YEAR!! GO BLUE! (My Pre-game Excitement Level: 91% and rising...)

My wife had a tough pregnancy. She had all day long sickness that lasted for 7 months. She lost 20 pounds and had to stop working and go on bedrest. She soldiered on and then finally delivered after a 10 hour labor, the doctor handed me a beautiful baby girl. I must have had a funny look on my face because my wife looked at me and asked what was wrong. I said "Not good enough. I wanted a boy."

I cried the week before my first wedding (the Colorado game). The marriage ended in divorce. She left in October, 2007; I was at the Rose Bowl January 1. Priceless! Lesson learned -- next wedding during the off-season. Still married. I cried the day my first son was born -- National Signing day, 2003. Hello Woodley! I cried the day I heard "Hail to the Victors" on the baby monitor. Why I had kids. GO BLUE!!!!

As of this post i have -27 points on this comment! totally sweet! I like this site and respect Brian and his crew. but yeah, I am serious. If you cry at that video you are a sobbing wet blanket. I don't really care about the negative points. I went to michigan and i have two degrees from the U. I was on the field in 97 after the OSU victory I was at the game when we lost to App St. If people down vote me b/c I tell them they shouldn't cry watching a video that is fine. I am friends with a few former football players from UM. They don't check this site, but I am pretty sure they wouldn't cry at that...lol. So, yeah, down vote me, but check yourself. and if you are really crying, uhh...well... sorry for you? And seriously, yeah my wife is two days overdue. My daughter will be born any day. Guess what, she won't cry during a football video! Come on, really? Go BLUE!!!!!!!!!!

The highlights are great, but I just can't get past the music. Have you ever stuck a meat thermometer in your ear, and just banged away at it with a mallett? It really smarts, don't you hate when that happens? It's still better than listening to Rilo Kiley.

Rilo Kiley isn't the best band in the world, but this song is outstanding. And even if you hate the song, surely you can see exactly how appropriate it is given the lyrical content and its proximity to the way Michigan football fans have felt. Honestly, taste or no taste, I have yet to find a hype video with better music, unless you are really into Soulja Boy. And if you are, it's possible there was a meat thermometer in your ear in the first place.

That video was the greatest thing to happen to me in this entire week. Beautiful, emotional, melancholic, hopeful, exciting, there are not enough words to describe it. "But the lows are so extreme That the good seems fucking cheap And it teases you for weeks in its absence But you'll fight and you'll make it through!" WOW. GO BLUE!
