Michigan 77, Wisconsin 54 Comment Count

Michigan went on a 43-6 run. Against Wisconsin. Sound, steady, obnoxiously consistent Wisconsin.

This didn't look like two Big Ten teams playing each other, let alone two Final Four contenders. Michigan was the varsity team to Wisconsin's JV squad, the lion to their antelope, the bully, the beast.

While the Wolverines held the lead for most of the first half, this was actually a close game for the opening 14 minutes or so. Then Michigan simply chose to choke the life out of Wisconsin's offense, going on a 14-0 run to end the half leading by 17 points, the biggest deficit UW had faced all season. It happened so fast that it's still hard to process. The Badgers looked like they'd been hit by a piano dropped from the heavens. They failed to so much as get a shot up on their final possession of the half.

It didn't stop after the break. There were no lanes to the basket for Wisconsin's guards, no post position for their big men, no chance to do much at all except shoot over the defense and hope. Even with Juwan Howard emptying the bench down the stretch, as is becoming tradition, Michigan hounded UW into shooting 11/37 on two-pointers and 9/28 from three. The Badgers had more turnovers (ten) than assists (eight). Five Wolverines combined to block nine shots with Hunter Dickinson and Isaiah Livers recording three apiece.

Meanwhile, the offense hummed along at well over 1.3 points per possession before (extended) garbage time. Mike Smith had maybe his best game as a Wolverine, scoring 16 points—including an ankle-breaking stepback three against Brad Davison—and dishing out six assists. Franz Wagner needed only ten shots to score 15 points and was everywhere on defense, recording four steals, a block, and several deflections. Livers and Dickinson chipped in 13 and 12, respectively, to add to their rim-protecting exploits.

The lead touched 40—FORTY—midway through the second half on a Chaundee Brown layup from Austin Davis, who returned for his first minutes since injuring his foot against Toledo. A few minutes prior, Brown sent the bench into a fit of hysteria with a tip-slam. Terrance Williams pretended to resuscitate a prone Jace Howard. Howard lived; Wisconsin's dignity did not.

Michigan has a signature win over a quality team now. They checked that box as emphatically as possible. The only fluke here is the final score, which is at least ten points closer than it could've been. Yes, closer. These are your Big Ten favorites, and as the ESPN studio crew discussed after the game, they may very well be in the conversation with Gonzaga and Baylor for the best team in the country.

This team is so well-rounded it’s scary. I’m never surprised when someone scores or shoots. 99% of teams have at least a couple guys that make you audibly go “why are you shooting that?” Not this team. It’s just so damn fun to watch how much fun they are having.

This team has a distinct intensity. On both ends we move “hard” and with such focus and intent. When was the last time someone looked lost during an O set? More than a blink out of position on D?

Talent wise we’re good with maybe a little very good sprinkled in but effort and focus combined with that talent and... you wreck the #9 team by 20+ points. All credit to Juwan and the staff. They have these guys on a razors edge that makes it look like they WANT Iowa, Gonzaga and Baylor. Like they WANT to be pushed harder. That early OT game vs. Oakland seems like it might have flipped a switch.

I’m concerned Brown may commit involuntary manslaughter after his next big dunk.

I can not say enough how much I love watching the energy, enthusiasm, and passion Brown plays with and brings to his team. So happy he gets to play this year for Michigan instead of being stuck at Wake Forest.

Great to see Austin back and contributing right away, we're going to need him against the monsters on some of the upcoming opponents.

It's hard to make absolute statements, but I've been watching Michigan basketball for 45 years now.  This may not be the best team we have had, but damn if I haven't seen a Michigan team play better ball than this team has played the last 3 games.  Dominating, suffocating D, efficient O with great passing and cutting, the ability to be unfazed if the opponent makes a run.  We will lose some games because basketball (or not?) but this is fun.

Remember when we almost lost to Oakland and the media was trying to make a big deal out of Livers having a discussion with Juwan?   Was that this team, this year?

I'm still waiting for the refs to do a 180 and call every ticky tacky foul putting Hunter in early foul trouble and preventing the offense from getting in rhythm. These games have been fun to watch because the refs have let them play, especially under the basket. When every shot has a blocking foul attached to it this sport become unbearable.

Unsung performance--Smith's D vs Davidson.

What Smith did defensively in this game against Davidson, especially early, cannot be understated. That helped set the tone and keep Michigan in control on both ends. Dude obviously worked damn hard in practice to shut him down like that--esp the post denials.

What to say that hasn't already been said about utterly liquifying Wisconsin?  Ok, I did see 'one' post about it, but suprisingly little else about the return of 'Big Country' (Austin Davis) to the line up. No he didn't come in and 'dominate' or anything, but he was solid in his minutes (12) and of course he's been out, so he's not going to be at full throttle. But 'great' to see him back out on the floor giving HD a breather and not hurt the line up.  Next, since we have nit pic to find 'anything' to say about this team, would it be too much to ask to have the end of bench players end with a positive +/-  or at least not surrender -10 net points when they hit the floor? I get the reality, you're sending players #11/12/13/14 out against a #9 ranked team so maybe it's expected. Maybe if they keep getting these final 3-4 minutes each game we can finally start to see them get comfortable? Though exactly as the announcers commented, a lot of their shots were hitting front of the rim and they weren't quite into a rhythm. As I said nit pic hoping our end of bench doesn't really show a drop off.
