1 hour and 20 minutes

1. The X and Sleep Show

starts at 1:00

Nobody had ever given X the full Tum Tum before. He of course took it as a personal affront. Teske has a TO rate that's so low it's changing Brian's mind about 10-foot jumps. Matthews has not been hitting it, but in this game he make a concerted effort to get it to the rim instead of going for the fadeaway.

2. Illinois

starts at 22:57

Still pretty good. Michigan's balance shows in its consistency. Valuable Livers. Illinois makes you turn the ball over, Michigan played their game and got choppy in the first half, but got it together in the 2nd half. Simpson weirdly reminded Brian of Darius Morris. Matthews 0/5 from mid-range. M goes 18/22 from the line! It's impossible to fully appreciate Charles Matthews's shutdown defense. Brian already regrets his preseason 2019-20 take. David's sad fouls hour. Murderotter.

3. Coaching Changes

starts at 48:38

They got themselves a spread guy who hashtags spread terms to go with their hashtag spread players. BC guy is a good recruiter with mad Rutger brother. Probably can't get Jerry Montgomery back on DL. OSU defections.

4. Gymnastics

starts at 1:06:30

She was hirable and defendable, except the way Michigan did it. Time to discuss Warde.

The hiring of the gymnastics coach would have been seen in a much better light, had the Athletic Department been upfront with their decision, and presented reasons why. Hiring her under the "cover of darkness" magnified the situation, as if they were already guilty of something. Not good Bob.

The question I'd like to ask Warde is - did he apologize because he believes she shouldn't have been hired, or because he did something people reacted negatively to?

If you believe it was ok to hire her, then firing her is a cowardly move, and very unfair to her.

If you think you shouldn't have hired her, why did you do it?

And to Brian's point - what is his WAR as an AD? I'm guessing 0. This incident should push it to negative, if only I had any faith a replacement AD would have handled it any better.

Exactly.  The way this should have gone is something like:

"We're thinking of hiring X."

"Are you sure?  X was part of that nasty scandal."

"X was cleared and the detailed report shows X did the right thing at each step."

"OK, if you think X is worth the baggage, then we put that front and center."

Then they hold the press conference where they announce her hiring, with other coaches and gymnasts supporting the issue, and they make it clear that they know she was part of the scandal, but that they think she did the right thing and they would want her to play it substantially the same way if something like that happened again.

This way, they basically got the worst of all possible worlds.  I wonder if she can sue UofM?

I see Josh Sanguinetti is scheduled for his official this week...he's been in the picture for a long time. I have always liked his film. Adding more "SEC" speed from Florida has to be a good thing. Josh's primary position is considered to be safety but he is a very good WR too...he does not get caught from behind! It will be interesting to see what Gattis thinks of him.

Weird question: Is Teske playing too many minutes?  The team is undoubtedly better when he's on the court but I'm concerned that he's putting in a ton of work so far. Mostly, I'm worried because Davis hasn't come along so well (I think that brief injury threw him off course) and Johns hasn't gotten a lot of solid minutes. Also, that end of OOC play didn't go as smoothly as we thought and Michigan didn't blow those teams out early to get those guys minutes.

I'd also like to see DeJulius get more minutes and more confidence in Brooks to run the offense for significant stretches to take some of the burden off Simpson.

For such a great team and one that rarely plays close games, they do not have much of a rotation. And now the schedule gets tougher and there will likely be less opportunities to work the bench guys into meaningful but safe game action. I LOVE this team, I just hope they don't get burned out come tournament time.

On the Warde issue. While they did a bad job about announcing the job there is something to be said that they did a good job of working with the athletes to make sure they were comfortable with it and taking their voice into it. So he does value the athletes, their input, and went about the hire in the right way except for the publicity aspect of it. I understand the publicity aspect of it is a big part of his job but it wasn't all done poorly.

I listen to these just to hear the M replay music at the beginning.

Reminds me when M was consistently pertinent.

Sad scrambled eggs.  David really wants Brian to try them.  We can do a Sam "Webb" I am version in which he tries to get Brian to try them.
