What are all these blitzes? [Bryan Fuller]

Matt & Seth Show: Wink, Mac, and Minter Comment Count

Seth February 11th, 2024 at 10:41 AM

NOTE: This is being reposted from Friday, but now you can see the plays I was talking about.

Matt Demorest, Realtor and Lender and I have brought back our (sometimes-)weekly video short. The purpose of these is to show you something on film that you as a fan will be able to pick up on when you see it in the future. Or to just show you what people are talking about.

We put this together this afternoon because there's been some questions about what's different between Win Martindale (who's blitzier) and his former assistants Mike Macdonald and Jesse Minter, who were using more simulated pressures than actual ones with their respective defenses last year. If you're in the housing market, Matt's the guy.

There is nothing after the jump because it's video content.

My uneducated thoughts.

  1. It appears as though we're getting a college DL coach in Scruggs from Wisconsin, and that the one name attached to Wink (Wilkins I think it was) has decided to stay in the NFL. So probably a no here.
  2. Not sure why this is relevant. Wink is an experienced DC, what does he need to be leaning on college coaches for exactly? And if he did need some, he has several co-workers that happen to be college coaches. If you're wondering if he's gonna ask college coaches how to recruit, I doubt it. Sherrone has made it pretty clear recruiting is a big point of emphasis for his regime, he will add much more to our recruiting department than we have had before. Wink, or any NFL guy, is a minus to recruiting but I think it'll still be a net win given his experience as a DC. Look at Mac and Minter, neither of them were great recruiters, still killed it as our DC's.
  3. Yes, of course recruiting still matters. Not all kids are just gonna go for the biggest bag. Sure some might and more may choose the bag over no bag when all else is equal. But at the end of the day, yes relationships DO matter to most of these kids.

Blitzier. Fun. Maybe. Will we have the personnel? Everyone's been knotting up their knickers about the coaches, but we've lost some players. Given that recruiting is about momentum, my questions point in two directions:

1) How many games will Sherrone need to win/will be under the circumstances?

2) What do we really need to make happen with NIL over the next year so as not to lost more ground?

I called Santa's office and offered my opinion about Warde: Maybe it's time for the gold watch and next man up. I had a strong feeling that the person on the other end agreed.

but we've lost some players

What key players have we lost? Unless I missed it the only guys we've 'lost' have been guys that have not yet made any meaningful contributions / were passed up by younger guys on the depth chart.

I am not at all worried about those kinds of losses. Yes, sucks to hurt depth but not like guys like Graham, Grant or Johnson have bolted.

Did we checked with Jim Harbaugh before making this hire? Are we sure he's not going to steal him away? Remember Jim needs/happiness come first.....then Michigan's.

Appreciate this fellas.

I feel much more comfortable, and almost excited, about Wink now. Was definitely having some 2018 OSU game flashbacks when I heard/read the blitzy stuff on him.

To me, it feels like the big difference between Wink and Mac/Minter is Wink is gonna send 5+ more often and he also won't do the 'show blitz then back off into just coverage' like Mac/Minter did.

Will be interesting to see how he schemes things up with our personnel. Moore, Paige, Johnson and Sabb give him an awful good start in the secondary. If we can find a solid CB #2 among the younger players we might not see much drop off at all.

Definitely helps to have guys like Graham and Grant up front.
