Juwan Howard Signs Five-Year Contract Extension Comment Count

Just hours before Michigan Basketball is set to take on Seton Hall in the Gavitt Tipoff Games, the program announced some bombshell news. And this time, it's the good kind:

As the release states, the deal will keep Howard in Ann Arbor until 2025-26. The decision to extend Howard seemed to be a no-brainer considering the rapid success he has achieved as head coach of the men's basketball program. In just over two seasons since taking over for John Beilein, Howard is 44-17 (.712), having won the Big Ten regular season crown last season and been named AP and Sporting News National Coach of the Year (in addition to B1G Coach of the Year). He took the Wolverines to the Elite Eight and then signed the #3 ranked recruiting class in America this spring, per the 247 composite. His team is currently ranked 4th in the AP poll.

Since Howard arrived in Ann Arbor, there has been constant speculation about a return to the NBA. This contract extension would seem to greatly mute that chatter. So should a quote from Athletic Director Warde Manuel, in the press release (emphasis mine):

"Juwan's love for this university is evident in all that he does, as is the joy he takes in the accomplishments of his student-athletes"

No financial details have been announced yet, but a raise of a substantial amount in this new contract is likely. There is no content after the jump.

Transitioned from Beilein to Juwan. Now we have one of the best young coaches in any level of basketball, a Big Ten title, an unlimited ceiling, and a beefy extension.

Hockey has the #1 team and the best roster by draft status ever assembled.

Football is riding its new young staff to the top ten.

Obviously, this calls for action:

Fire Warde Manuel.

he ain't leaving.  he doesn't need the money, he has enough to nearly buy an NBA team if he wanted one.  he doesn't want to travel to 46 away games.  he is a natural recruiter.  he is loved and gets nearly zero (and justifiably so) negative chatter/press.  his quality of life is astronomically better in AA than going city-to-city in the NBA.

With the recent departure of Roy Williams, the announced departure of Coach K and the near term departure of Izzo. Juwan could become America’s best known basketball coach by the time he has five years in!

Amazing work.

Warde's emphasis on Juwan's love of the university is very on point. Juwan was far and away the most excited fan at Michigan Stadium for the football games I've attended. Absolutely can't be faked.

Didn't think it was possible to replace Coach Beilein. A guy that exuded, class, integrity and excellence both on and off the court.

But Coach Howard has done exactly that. He not only sustained Coach Beilein's excellence, but has the potential to raise that bar to a new standard.

Thrilled with the extension - hopefully one of many to come.

I wonder if coach and his family really know how appreciated they truly are by fans of M? I say this only because their circle is inherently limited. I’d say NEVER, including Bo & Jon B, has coach had such universal approval and outright love among the spectrum of the fandom. I’ve yet to encounter a negative person about Juwan. He’s doing right and everyone see’s it.

He’ll win a national championship. Coach his kids in college. And when both of those happen, he’ll got to the NBA. And that is a good deal for all
