It's Tate Comment Count

Brian

This is simultaneously not even worth posting and a huge relief:

-- University of Michigan football coach Rich Rodriguez announced tonight (Thursday, Sept. 3) during the Inside Michigan Football Radio Show that true freshman Tate Forcier (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch HS) would take the first snap at quarterback against Western Michigan on Saturday (Sept. 5) at Michigan Stadium.

Brown will start at tailback, Olesnavage at kicker. Minor is "expected to play."

buy this either. I think the only way all three play is if whoever is playing stuggles mightily. I only see Sheridan seeing the field if the freshman just can't get anything done. In other words, I don't think there is any way Sheridan comes in if Tate is looking decent. I do think Denard will see the field no matter what as a change of pace. I think the "I'll play all 3" line is just another way of saying RR has 3 QBs that he feels comfortable enough to put on the field at any given time - they all appear to know at least some of the playbook and are ready to step in.

"• Rodriguez announced the team's game captains for the opener: superback Carlos Brown, left tackle Mark Ortmann, defensive end Brandon Graham and punter Zoltan Mesko." superback? Am I the only one who hasn't heard that before?

I can't imagine the anxiety Tate is going to go through Friday night. If I was in that situation, I'm not really sure how I would fall asleep. God help him, and us for that matter!

Dear Lord baby Jesus, lyin' there in your ghost manger, just lookin' at your Baby Einstein developmental videos, learnin' 'bout shapes and colors. I would like to thank you for bringin' Tate and Michigan together, and also that my kids no longer sound like retarded gang-bangers.

I think Tate is going to get a big ovation for the first snap Saturday and it's justified. But, c'mon everyone. Michigan is our team. If Sheridan plays Saturday, give him a big cheer of support. He wouldn't see the field if Rich Rod didn't think he could contribute (Evidence in support: David Cone.) The team needs its fans now. Cheer them all. GO BLUE.

That does not mean that we are not justified in thinking "Oh God, please let this not be so bad." Kind of like we are justified in thinking "Oh God, please don't fumble" every time we see Odoms line up to receive a punt.

(disclosure: i actually believe what coach says about our qbs) i think sheridan will see the field at qb, more than denard. even tate says that nick has the mental part of the position down better than anyone. i thought sheridan would start, but i think it is a good move to put tate in to see if he can handle the pressure of being the starter. i think he can. if things go poorly for tate, he can bring in sheridan to settle things down. i know this board hates sheridan, but i think he is at least good/improved enough to do that. if sheridan would have started and gotten us into a mess, it would be tougher for tate to come in and "rescue" us. also, allowing tate to start against WMU and get plenty of playing time should help next week. since denard has the least reps and is the least familiar with the offense, i think he sees the least action. they will probably put in a very limited package for him. i am a bit worried that the package will be so limited that Western will be able to key in and stop him, i.e designed runs from the qb position a la feagin last year. i really want to see his speed in the open field. anyway, i am sitting at work wearing my #5 jersey i bought wednesday night waiting for the season to start. GO BLUE!

There is something...odd...about this. Haven't we been hearing for the past few weeks that Minor has been practicing very sparingly since he was suffering headaches from his car accident? So how is it that he wound up with a bad ankle? I'm not really suggesting a conspiracy theory, but, wow, he's kind of a dainty flower, isn't he? On a totally unrelated note, what the hell is going on with the duck wings on Oregon's uniforms? There really are no words.

I think that the game will be a somewhat lopsided victory for Michigan (20+ points) and Rich knows it. This is obviously why he's planning for Nick Sheridan to be the human victory cigar! I'm hoping Denard is used in the wildcat a couple times, then sucks the defense in while he bombs one for a TD. Perfect.

I hope he shines: I do have a good feeling about this. It would be nice to get the QB pecking order cleared up for the sake of the rest of the O, and for the sake of practice reps.
