Indiana 38, Michigan 21 Comment Count

Ace November 7th, 2020 at 4:00 PM

1. Indiana had 254 passing yards—at halftime. Michael Penix Jr. completed nine passes of 15+ yards on the day.

2. Michigan's defense committed offside penalties on two Indiana touchdowns and at least three other plays, I lost count and so did the live stats.

3. The Hoosiers entered this game 6-for-23 on third down conversions in 2020. They were 9-for-17 this afternoon before kneeling out the clock.

4. IU beat U-M by one more point than they beat Rutgers last week.

5. U-M last lost to IU by double digits in 1959.

6. Ty Fryfogle set a career high with 142 receiving yards and a touchdown on seven receptions.

7. With sacks removed, U-M rushed for 33 yards on 15 carries (2.2 YPC). IU's previous two opponents, Penn State and (once more, for emphasis) Rutgers, ran for 414 yards on 80 carries (5.2 YPC).

8. Iowa beat Michigan State 49-7 this afternoon. The Hawkeyes entered that game 0-2 with losses to Purdue and Northwestern. I don't need to remind you what happened last weekend.

9. This screencap:

10. Jim Harbaugh had a 20-4 record at Michigan heading into the 2016 Ohio State game. He's 28-16 since.

11. The Wolverines are 10-8 dating back to the 2018 OSU game. The margins in those eight losses have been 29, 26, 23, 21, 19, 17, seven, and three points.

Jim Harbaugh, Josh Gattis, and Don Brown need to turn the season around in a way that's hard to foresee right now to avoid facing some very difficult questions about their ability to run this program.

You all should be prepared to be greatly disappointed.

Let's talk reality: Harbaugh isn't going elsewhere unless he wants to go elsewhere.  This season is probably being looked at as Brian Kelly year 7, plus factoring in the massive attrition and the general goofiness created by Covid.

The position is endowed by private money. So while the argument that Jim is making too much is a fair one for discussion, it's meaningless on the practical financial level.

I don't deny a change is justified. I think it's silliness by over reactionary fans to think one is certain to happen.

Comparing the back versus not back opinions: It's way more certain he will be back with a staff overhaul.

All the pitchforking may be right. But at this point I'm seeing one good thing, and looking for another.

Good thing: from what I've read, Harbaugh's not blaming others. Though coaches routinely know to say they're taking responsibility, many (e.g., Izzo) then make clear that it's the players' fault for not doing what they were told to do. Harbaugh isn't doing that.

Looking for: improvement through the season. Not just better-than-terrible but growing mastery of the job.

I realize that there are much larger issues to complain about, but what the heck is wrong with Erick All?  Is it just me or does he seem to have some of the worst hands ever?  They keep trying to force feed him and its accomplishing nothing.

This might a bit of a spicy take for a Monday morning, but... When do we start talking about Harbaugh and the Larry Coker effect in the same sentence? I mean:

10. Jim Harbaugh had a 20-4 record at Michigan heading into the 2016 Ohio State game. He's 28-16 since.

20-4 with Brady Hoke's players and 28-16 with his own. I'm not saying, but I'm just saying...

Don't forget this stat--Ricky White of MSU has played three games in his career:

  • Game 1: 1 catch, 5 yards
  • Game 2: 8 catches, 196 yards, 1 TD
  • Game 3: 1 catch, 22 yards

Guess which game was us (I know you already know--we all saw it.)
