Illinois 97, Michigan 68 Comment Count

For about 15 minutes it seemed as if Michigan would be able to go on the road, without Dug McDaniel, and hang around with a respectable showing against a good opponent. Michigan had traded punches with Illinois throughout the first half and then used a 8-1 spurt to trim the Illini lead to 28-25 in Champaign. There was 4:48 left on the clock and you might have thought that perhaps Juwan Howard's squad could get to the locker room feeling like they had a legitimate chance to win. Then the levee broke, the game taken over by the singular dominance of Terrance Shannon Jr., Illinois' primary star. He engineered a 19-4 run to end the half with his perimeter shooting and playmaking ability and before you could blink, it was an 18 point game at halftime. The second half was a continuation of that romp, spiraling to the point that Illinois lifted Shannon and other starters halfway through, because the score was so lopsided. Yeah.

The first half had some promising moments for Michigan. Terrance Williams II started the game reasonably hot, scoring a few early buckets to get Michigan into the game. Tarris Reed Jr. flashed a few moments on defense, collecting a couple blocks and making a few shots at the rim. George Washington III had one of the highlights of his young career on a an assist to set up a Will Tschetter fast-break dunk. Michigan was hanging in there, scrapping and clawing with a much more talented Illinois team. The run that trimmed the lead to three included dunks from Reed and Nkamhoua, as well as a jumper from the Finn.

Shannon's explosion buried the game. Michigan's defense offered him up easy three opportunities from the corner, hitting two to get Illinois going. A minute later, he hit a third, a fast-break, pull-up three from downtown. Michigan was bleeding points now, their offense reeling as well. Just a pair of jumpers from Nkamhoua and Burnett stemmed the tide and it was not nearly enough as Illinois kept dominating on offense. Shannon made another three (his fourth in the final five minutes!), then blocked a Burnett jumper, came down the floor, drove inside, kicked to Luke Goode, and the wing drained that shot. Michigan turned the ball over immediately after, giving Illinois the ball in the frontcourt with 1 second left and the Illini actually connected on another three, but this one didn't count. Coleman Hawkins' pump-fake took too much time and Michigan went to halftime down 47-29.

The second half merits very little discussion, as it was more of the same. Illinois was just as hot as they were to end the first, guns blazing on offense with the same characters firing on all cylinders. Hawkins hit a three, then Shannon finished an and-one, all in the opening minute. Just like that, the lead was 24. Reed added some points for the Wolverines but Michigan kept putting up two-pointers while Illinois was tacking on three-point possessions. Hawkins hit another three and it was 59-34. By the time the under-16 timeout arrived, it was 63-37 Fighting Illini. At this juncture, Illinois was firing at 1.52 PPP, near the highest mark ever allowed by Michigan, per Dylan Burkhardt.

That PPP clip didn't continue, because around the halfway point of the second half Brad Underwood lifted Shannon and some of the other stars. But it could've gotten there. Michigan was providing little resistance and the Illini were shooting the lights out. Juwan Howard left his regulars out there but the game had no air of competitiveness and eventually Cooper Smith and Jackson Selvala found their way out there. You can click on the box score if you want the nitty gritty details of this game, but minutes15 through 40 were identical to the Nebraska first half, so there is little else new to say here. Michigan without Dug McDaniel is a catastrophically bad basketball team and tonight was another piece of supporting evidence.

The next game is on Saturday night at 8:00 PM EST against Michigan State. The game is at Crisler, so McDaniel will be back, and it can be found on Fox. Michigan is 8-17 on the season and 3-11 in conference play, still in dead last, but perhaps a win over the Spartans will save a little face for the season.

I do wonder how this team finishes out the year.  They're terrible but at least in my viewing they haven't given up in terms of just turning on each other.  When they look outplayed it's because the other team is just better than them, not that they don't give a shit.  Maybe at the end of a blowout but they still have a little fight.  But you can only get smashed so many times before that caves in and then it can get really ugly.  MSU is the last meaningful home game (yes they play Purdue but that's going to be a bloodbath) where you could see the team have a chance at a "signature" win.  If they don't look competitive there I do wonder what the last half-dozen games feel like.

Howard is gone after this season, and while people seemingly think Warde not publicly shitting on Howard during the season is evidence against that, this is the type of season nobody survives beyond just insane circumstances.

I've never advocated for any Michigan coach getting fired (including 2020) and I'm not doing that here but I see your reason as the opposite....a reason to allow Juwan to step down. Protect Juwan from Juwan.

Something is clearly missing...maybe Juwan just can't give it his all right now. These college coaching jobs are brutal around the clock jobs. Your health/family is so much more important. Plus Juwan is set financially so take some time, recharge, maybe even retire, but definitely spend time with the fam then reassess a few years from now and go from there.

Just my 2 cents.

I will advocate for it. He doesn’t need the job and it wouldn’t put him or his family in hard times. He’s run this into the ground on his own with bad decisions dating back to 2020. He has not been focused on basketball. When people are literally having trouble giving tickets away to a Michigan basketball game, thats a problem. Leaders and Best, remember?

Yeah, for a while now I've assumed that if Howard leaves the program it won't be an official firing as much as a "parting of ways" with the health situation, I guess, providing an out.  I sort of assumed even before the heart attack he'd say something about how he wanted to follow his kids in their pro careers.

Agreed. I'm not sure how you can bring him back after the last two seasons when they don't look like they've received any coaching whatsoever. It is sort of like Brady Hoke. Started off strong and then just got worse and worse as the years went on.. and I don't see any scenario where next year is much better.

I'm sure they can come up with a solution - due to his health issues, he needs to step away or cannot commit the time needed to coach the team, etc. But bringing him back when next year is likely to be just as bad is just making everything worse

My high school basketball team played Dearborn Heights Robichaud in 1990 with Tyrone Wheatley on their team. I remember being down like 40 points at the half. We’re all sitting in the locker room silent. The coach speaks up after about 2 minutes of silence, and all he said was “whatever you do, don’t let them score 100”, and then promptly left the locker room. They got to around 90 and we started playing four corners.

They didn’t hit 100. That was our victory. I’m thinking that was Michigan’s only victory tonight. The saddest victory of them all.

I don't understand.  A MAC team could play better even though the raw talent is much lower. Looks like this team does not get much coaching and developement.

Past couple of weeks when I've checked mgoblog.com I've been thinking there may be news that Howard is resigning and I've been disappointed to see there is no such news nor rumor.

Juwan and team have clearly checked out, which might be for the best as I’m just hoping against the occurrence of any more potentially embarrassing events like fights with other coaches or staff.

Sounds terrible, but it’s clear this isn’t working and the frustration and seemingly shitty locker room and team culture could be a combustible situation if there was any passion left.

There is one positive characteristic of this UM Bball team.

Consistency.

1st half - They play sorta well to very well.

2nd half - Gone like the wind.

“Turn out the lights. The party’s over.”

Done.
