Buckle Up: Jordan Poole Announces Friday

Michigan waited longer than most programs to hand out offers to 2017 basketball prospects, but their selectiveness may help them land a commitment—and very soon, at that. Four-star WI SG Jordan Poole picked up his offer when he first visited campus for the BYU game; at the time he told The Wolverine's Chris Balas that the distinction of being M's first offer recipient in the class wasn't lost on him ($):

"I thought it was great," he said. "I really didn't know they hadn't offered anyone else until I got there. It shows they look for certain people and qualities as far as basketball and personality.

"For me to be the first …. Coach Beilein doesn't just give out offers. Some schools give out offer after offer. Coach Beilein really takes the time thinking about the right fit, if a kid really likes school and is thinking about going there. Being the first in the 2017 class is amazing."

Poole visited campus again last weekend; he told Scout's Brian Snow it was a "great" trip ($). Yesterday, he set his announcement:

All signs point to Michigan. Poole would be a nice pickup; he's the #92 overall player in the 247 Composite and holds offers from the likes of Auburn, Illinois, Indiana, and Marquette.

M Offers Jaren Jackson

Michigan's second offer of the 2017 class went out to an Indiana prospect, which should come as little surprise for those familiar with John Beilein's recruiting history. Four-star forward Jaren Jackson added the offer while visiting campus a couple weekends ago. The competition looks to be fierce: Butler, Georgetown, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Purdue, Vanderbilt, and Xavier have also extended him an offer.

Jackson's father discussed his son's visit and offer with Scout's Brian Snow ($):

About the trip, Jackson Sr. said, “They don’t give out offers to a lot of people, and are very particular with the type of kid they offer. They preach academics and want to make sure that the recruits they bring in are up to par academically as well as being a good fit for their program.”

He continued about the Wolverines, “We understood everything they do and what they say. They recognize his upside, and they saw him recently at two open gyms and feel he can bring a lot to their team. Every time they see him, they say they like him more and more, and are sure that Jaren would be a perfect fit for their program.”

At 6'9", 215 pounds, Jackson would likely be a four in Beilein's system; as the video above shows, he's got skill to go along with that size.

One more player to keep an eye on is Ohio wing Maishe Dailey, who's mulling a decision to take a prep year and reclassify to the 2017 class after fielding a ton of late interest, per Scout's Kyle Bogenschutz. Dailey has a couple options—namely Wisconsin and Rutgers—if he wants to stick in the 2016 class, but Michigan could be a major player if he takes that prep year.

Happy Trails, Brendan Bailey

Happy trails to Brendan Bailey, a 2016 wing who'll be a freshman in 2018 after a Mormon mission. Bailey had Michigan in his final group but ultimately decided on Marquette:

"A couple of days ago I sat down with my family and we talked about it," Bailey said. "It was between Marquette, Michigan and Gonzaga. We just thought the best place for me would be Marquette."

It's safe to say Michigan has plenty of time to unearth other options for the 2018 class.

It sounds like Beilein has decided to be more selective and not get jerked around by kids who are going to sign with the dirty programs anyway.  I like this a lot.

selling his selectivity. It increases the value and the desire to land an offer. Part of his success has been in the overall qualities of the recruit, I didn't want to see him compromise that.

Looks like Poole would be a great fit. From the highlights he catches the ball in the triplet threat position. He appears to be a good shooter, but can really put it on the floor and has a nice mid range game. Would be a good pickup for Michigan.

Georgetown might be the leader for Jaren Jackson Jr., whose father played for the Hoyas in the late 1980s (his mother attended Georgetown as well). I also heard that he's lived in Indiana for only a couple of years, having moved there from the DC area.

I'm a big fan of Poole's skill set. Very fluid shooter, looks sound athletically, and his film shows his determination on defense. He has pretty good size, but I most of all like his high release and efficient stroke--I think that will pay huge dividends at the next level. He'll definitely have to add some creation to his game, but only entering his Junior year of high school, I'm confident in his ability to do so. Overall I think he fits great in Beilein's system; I'm excited to follow his development.

I also love his skill set. He can finish with both hands and is a good passer as well. He can get his own shot too. I'm assuming he's ranked where he is because he doesn't have elite, NBA-level athleticism, but his game and skill set matches very well with what Beilein runs.

approach is Tom Crean who seems to offer every 4 & 5 star with no thought given to fit. Maybe that is why IU has so many people leaving the program (and not for the NBA).

I wouldn't doubt for a minute that another reason Poole was so thankful for Coach Beilein's offer is that an IU offer these days usually leads to an unhappy ending. Poole seems to be of such good character that he would never explicitly say it, so I took it upon myself to go down that path and said it for him!

to know hometowns of every single player but last one that comes to mind for me from either football or basketball is John Navarre.

And I only know that one becaue I remember my 18 year old self thinking "Cudahy" was a funny name for a city and that name has always stuck with me.

Obligatory "No offense to anyone is from Cudahy, Wisconsin"

In 2017 there are Bowen, Tillman, Jermaine Jackson Jr...

Not sure if your "fixated" comment had a certain connotation or not.

Beilein has recruited players from MI. Austin Davis is committed. Winston had UM as the leader for a while. Miles Bridges had a visit planned. Josh Jackson was never going to come to UM, so theres that. And to be honest, the state of Michigan hasnt been churning out a lot of high level D1 talent in recent years. Beilein has shown interest in all of the kids from Michigan that he should be.

Beilein is fixated on finding the right type of player for UM and his style.

And you know, some of those other states he fixated on, like Indiana and Ohio, gave UM some pretty good players recently...

I thought as much, but I didnt want to assume and warp his meaning.

We appear to be "fixated" on players from elsewhere because they are good players. There just aren't that many great players in MI right now. State's super class in 2016 has players from OH and AL as well as Winston and Bridges*. None of their 2017 offers are from MI yet.

Beilein has been in Indiana and Ohio a lot because he has landed talented players from there, and there are more of them (Robinson, McGary, Irvin, Burke, Lavert)

The only recent in-state guy both went after that went to State is Winston, and you could make arguements both ways on why he is going there instead of UM.

'beat' State for Winston, if Simpson ends up being the better player in college?  Does it matter to people that Beilein didn't 'beat' State for Appling, when he got Darius Morris and Trey Burke in the years both before and after Appling's class?   Does it matter that Beilein didn't 'beat' State for Valentine when he ended up signing Stauskas instead?  Did it matter that Beilein didn't 'beat' State for Derrick Nix when he got Jordan Morgan instead?

Izzo's been 'beating' Beilein for talent since Beilein arrived at Michigan, yet up until last season with UM's injuries, Beilein had a pretty nice head to head record since he got his program up to speed(6-3 before last season for the previous 4 yrs).  When it comes to perimeter talent especially, I'll take the guys Beilein chooses over the guys Izzo 'beats' UM for any day of the week.  And that's not to say that the MSU kids have sucked, but simply speaking, outside of some injuries, UM's have been better, regardless of where they've come from.

All that, and not one of the kids Beilein has recruited has had any legal or academic trouble, pretty impressive.
